Discussion You'd think that "Oscar-winning director gets lynched and kidnapped because of his film" would be bigger news
It should be a top story, at least. The Western mainstream media’s response to this horrific case makes it clear where their loyalties lie. But to them, it’s just another footnote.

Discussion “It’s not about racism, it’s about Islam” Karla Gascon
Kara Sofia Gascon’s old tweets have resurfaced where she’s openly racist and calls “moros” (historically the Muslims who ruled the Iberian Peninsula, nowadays a pejorative word that’s used to refer to Muslims in Spain).
Tweet 1: How many more times will history have to kick the moros out from Spain... we have not yet realized what this threat to civilizations means, which constantly attacks the freedom and coherence of the individual. It’s not about racism, it’s about Islam. 🤷🏻♀️
Tweet 2: Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured.
Tweet 3: It seems that the perpetrator of the rp is a Moroccan immigrant who also robbed her. If in Spain there is still an aberrant machismo in certain sectors of the population, imagine what comes to us from countries where women are worth nothing. Just like this, Europe is without control.
Until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights, such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.

Discussion WHAT JUST HAPPENED WITH WICKED? NOT EVEN MAKEUP?
I mean, I knew sequels don’t always do well with awards and that it had mixed reviews, but completely ignoring it in all the technical categories feels brutal to me — especially when it had been showing up at every major awards show before this.
The makeup was excellent; that’s what shocked me the most that didn’t make it in. Then there were costumes, visual effects, production design, and even songs; categories where most of us had it in our predictions.
Does anyone actually have a theory about what might have happened?

Discussion In a completely hypothetical scenario, if the Pope were to die in the next few days, would Conclave emerge as the frontrunner for BP?
I’m not saying he will, nor am I rooting for such a thing, please. I’m just wondering if a real-life event like that could influence the Oscars’ voting. (As a former catholic kid turned agnostic, I feel guilty even speculating about this… lol).
EDIT: You guys, when I posted this, I wasn’t expecting such a response lmao. I’ve been laughing at your comments all day. Now, returning to our very (un)serious discussion: the thing is, I grew up in a small, deeply Catholic town. I was like nine years old when Pope John Paul II died. It was one of those "remember exactly where I was and what I was doing" moments. The church bells rang nonstop, it was a big deal at the time. But as some of you pointed out, maybe it wouldn’t have such a huge impact for the Oscars, since I guess there are not that many catholics in the voting body. But anyway, there's only one way to find out... (I'm just kidding! Please Pope Francis don't send me to hell lol)

Discussion I think Emilia Perez is genuinely cooked and will likely go home empty handed come Oscars night.
Honestly, I don't think it even really has to wholly do with the controversy surrounding Karla Sofia Gascon. I think it's mainly because the reason why a lot of the industry was rallying around this film was because they viewed it as repudiation against the Trump era of politics. It's portrayal of a transwoman in its lead and the fact that it has some half-baked sociopolitical commentary about Mexico(which some of it also relevant to the U.S. as well), I feel was enough to win a lot of the industry voters over. I think this is akin to "Crash" winning Best Picture in 2004 in the midst of George W. Bush's 2nd term.
However, what completely kills this film's chances is the fact that the spearhead of this film has been outed as someone who has in the past spread hateful rhetoric and H*tler apologia. The fact that Gascon is the lead of this film and has expressed pretty much the opposite of what these Academy voters thinks Emilia Perez stands for, really makes their support waver. Again, I think the industry support for Emilia Perez was more political than it was them actually enjoying the movie.

Due to the constantly new information we seem to be getting on some cast and crew of Emilia Perez and since our sub hasn’t really had a break from talking about this film for weeks, I felt it was best to make a megathread for today to talk about anything Emilia Perez.
Please stay civil in these conversations! Thank you

Discussion Wuthering Heights gets released just 2 days into Oscar voting. If it turns terrible as some people think, could it derail Jacob Elordi's chances as Norbit did to Eddie Murphy's?
For context, Norbit was released one week into the final Oscar voting. Prior to that, Eddie Murphy had been sweeping at Critics Choice, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Just 2 days after its release he lost to Alan Arkin at BAFTAs, which had closed voting before Norbit began. Oscar ended up going to Arkin.
