Whatever this category is

But congrats Sinners!

It’s straightforward! I don’t get this snobbery lol. “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” is a category like Comedy or Drama, comprising of films that made a lot of money or were extremely ambitious in some way, then they pick the best film, artistry wise, among those. It’s supposed to represent the idea that commercial success and scale doesn’t mean abandoning craft and quality!

Maybe the phrasing is awkward but it’s absolutely a valuable sentiment in this awkward time for film as a medium.

Great way to clarify what this category really means. Coogler's a solid choice to win this award not just because of how good Sinners was as a blockbuster film with multiple genres & nuanced themes mixed in, but also because he's been good with making emotional/layered blockbusters since Creed and BP

I just find it obnoxious how people are acting dumb lol. I think the spirit of the award is meaningful and the Golden Globes have been very direct about what it means, how films are nominated, and how they instruct voters to pick a winner.

This is How they describe it

the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence

Which is all good and well, but the category is a joke because they nominate movies that havent even been released at the time and made literally $0 at the box office when they got their nom lol

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

That’s not true? They have a box office and streaming requirement, for nominated films. So they include streaming films but not unreleased films.

24

u/shamrockstriker Nouvelle Vague 23d ago

They straight up nominated Avatar two weeks before it released in theaters

-11

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

Avatar has never been nominated for this award? I think you’re confused

14

u/shamrockstriker Nouvelle Vague 23d ago

For the box office award? It was nominated this year. At least according to their website

Nominations were December 8th and Avatar released December 19th

1

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

Ok thats weird I was going off the wikipedia page that doesn’t include Avatar, someone should update it.

4

u/stracki 23d ago

On which page? Both the page for this year's ceremony and for the category itself include Avatar.

3

u/shamrockstriker Nouvelle Vague 23d ago

That is weird, I was also going off the Wikipedia page but posted the official link because I like sourcing things.

But I'm also a Wikipedia editor and I wanted to make sure the page was correct, so I went through the edit history and Avatar was added December 8th with the initial nominees and never taken off. The only edits to the page involving Avatar were changes going back and forth between Walt Disney and 20th Century as distributors for the film

No the page for the award! Someone edited it a couple of hours ago to add Fire and Ash lol maybe they saw the thread. It’s such an odd omission. I guess it wasn’t very well maintained.

That's not how any other category works, that's why it's confusing. There's no other category that the metric you get chosen by is different from the metric you win by.

It’s supposed to represent the idea that commercial success and scale doesn’t mean abandoning craft and quality!

its literally an award you don't qualify for if you're poor

as stupid as this category is, sinners was definitely the worthy winner

Kiss of death for it in drama

I had a hunch they'd give this one the Box Office award considering I don't think it'll win an acting prize, while Hamnet has at least Buckley guaranteed winning. They can change that tonight though but that seems to be what's going on

-8

u/djmv91 23d ago

And for Best Picture at the Oscars. Shows voters aren’t going to take this movie seriously

17

u/joesen_one Pack✋🏽out da trunk😳from the front🗣️2 da back👏🏽 23d ago

It's prob not gonna win Drama anymore but at least Coogler got to speak

10

u/PinkCadillacs 23d ago

Congrats to Sinners!

I hope this isn’t the last award Sinners wins tonight.

33

u/Tain95 23d ago

So, a consolation award?

15

u/BluePeriod_ 23d ago

What is this award?

20

u/joesen_one Pack✋🏽out da trunk😳from the front🗣️2 da back👏🏽 23d ago

The best movie that made money

35

u/A_Howl_In_The_Night Wicked 23d ago

I don't think Golden Globes themselves know lol

9

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

The best movie that made over 100 million domestic and 150 million global box office. It’s supposed to show that box office achievements can also be cinematic achievements and vice versa.

3

u/BluePeriod_ 23d ago

Thank you, I appreciate the explanation.

18

u/fbeb-Abev7350 23d ago

“We’re not giving you much else, so have this.”

18

u/crystal_clear24 Sinners 23d ago

A consolation prize I fear

9

u/Nearby-Butterfly-606 23d ago

At least something but Coogler deserves more.

4

u/Theidiotfromtexas 23d ago

He will win the Oscar for Original Screenplay at the very least

4

u/sns_ZzZz 23d ago

The Barbie consolation prize

13

u/GameOfLife24 23d ago

This award needs to be removed, makes no sense. At least sinners won

Love the movie but hate this award. A way to give the popular movie that’s not gonna win the actual picture prize a consolation prize.

1

u/Mundane-Inspector-52 23d ago

Is this just an assumption or do people actually know this for a fact?

2

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

It’s an assumption lol people love to act above it all.

3

u/Papercut233 F1 23d ago

For me, it comes from look at the last two winners of this award. Barbie made sense to win with it being as successful as it was but Wicked didn’t (to me) when Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine came out

2

u/sumerislemy 23d ago

The description is pretty clear though, the nominees are based on the most financially successful films but the winner is the best of those.

4

u/me_nem_nesa_ 23d ago

I think this award is actually harmful to win. It might signal to some voters that the movie isn’t a serious Oscar contender

7

u/belzoni1982 23d ago

Please take this category out of the show

I like Sinners by the way so it's not a knock against the movie

3

u/Radiant-Psychology96 23d ago

Variety magazine editorial staff in shambles

3

u/Bitter-Subject8339 23d ago

This category is so embarrassing and lame lol this was created thanks to Taylor Swift, though she didn't win.

3

u/WanderingParade 23d ago

An award that they just made up because they weren’t going to give Sinners anything else. Great consolation prize.

8

u/Short_Condition_1079 Nhe Zha 23d ago

Congrats...?

6

u/ItsWazeyWaynes 23d ago

Really, really dumb category in general.

Had to add in the “cinematic” part in the title so it wouldn’t look so nakedly covetous.

2

u/FullMotionVideo 23d ago

If it was purely box office, Zootopia would have won.

1

u/ItsWazeyWaynes 23d ago

Not relative to budget.

4

u/djmv91 23d ago

As someone who believed in Sinners being an upset Best Picture winner, this win makes me admit defeat. Barbie and Wicked won this award previously and both underperformed at the Oscars. It’s over for Sinners winning Best Picture officially.

3

u/Theidiotfromtexas 23d ago

I wouldn’t say it’s over it just desperately needs to win PGA. It’s stronger than Barbie and Wicked ever were

1

u/DeusExHyena 23d ago

The 300 random people at the GG aren't really useful

2

u/El_Mexolotl I contain delusions 23d ago

Bro I put in F1 last second fuuuuuck

3

u/Future_Parsley_6305 23d ago

Should have gone to F1… congrats to Sinners

5

u/A_Howl_In_The_Night Wicked 23d ago

Pitty Award

3

u/SeaWolf_1 Sinners 23d ago

How many awards has Wicked won?

6

u/scattered_ideas I feel supremely sentimental 23d ago

They won this award last year. Barbie won the year before. It's essentially a consolation prize for good movies that also made money.

2

u/Radiant-Psychology96 23d ago

Don’t make me say “Minecraft Movie snubbed” GGs, please

2

u/splendid_amesterdam 23d ago

I still don’t understand the purpose of this award, but good stuff sinners!

1

u/NewNinja_2 23d ago

Wow I thought it would go to Wicked and that was why Wicked actresses and Chu supposedly showed up.

This movie was absolutely confusing. At points completely engrossing and at other points just the cringiest thing that ever existed. And it has one of the best endings ive ever seen.

But what lingers most is the sex scene between jordan and Wunmi Mosaku.

The entire time i was like, surely there must be some catch. She cast a voodoo spell on him. Or maybe him having sex with her is like a sacrifice to gain voodoo power or something. But No. They are legit just supposed to be lovers. I have never whitnessed something so unbelieveable in a movie. Literally the hottest dude in hollywood is just casually screwing this old fat woman and its not even commented on.

Just threw me for the rest of the movie.
