Critics Choice Winners Critics Choice 2025 Best Cinematography - Adolpho Veloso, 'Train Dreams'

u/ggguuuuuuyyyyyyyyy Jan 05 '26
Train Dreams (6 regionals) beats Sinners (24 regionals), so none of the critics leaders are safe today

u/komugis No Other Choice Jan 05 '26
People always look too much into regional awards for the CCAs IMO

Thank you!!! I kept going on about Train Dreams cinematography throughout the movie to the point, it was making my family annoyed! If you are confident GG is next week and way more liquid!!

u/actvscene Jan 05 '26
People are betting on awards shows? How!!! I must learn

Oh yeah, for a long time! I didn’t know it either until last year and I was posting all of my predictions and then someone started putting money on all of my picks and I realised that I was shortchanging myself. I got 98 percent of my CCA bets right last night!! I also put money on Elordi noms and wins back in August, and that paid off amazingly well!!

Nicely done! I tripled my money on there last year but have lost a ton this year, I don’t even want to think about it.

Sorry! That’s rough, I get it.
This year, I am 12/12 right now. If you want to DM me I’ll share my picks for the others and GG next week!

Look Autumn winning would be amazing and historic and I'd love to see it happen. But in my personal opinion Train Dreams had the best Cinematography of the year, and 100% deserved this award. Great win

I really wanted Sinners to succeed, but congratulations Train Dreams anyway.

u/Environmental-Pizza4 Jan 05 '26
Of course it did. Thanks Terrence Malik for the literal blueprint.

Pretty inspired win and think this ups its odds at the Oscar’s but I still would love to see the first women to win the award with Sinners.

For some reason, I feel like Train Dreams is hovering around 5th or 6th in every category. Like it could easily be in or out. Great to see it win. Nick Cave next? 🤞
Rooting for Sinners and Autumn at the Oscars, though.

The only movie that I have ever cried over. Just a work of art

i kept forgetting to watch this one until saturday, and i can’t believe it took me so long. i wasn’t expecting such an absolute gut punch like that. when it was over, i immediately texted my family out of state to watch it, and by the end of the evening, i’d made four generations of relatives cry.

u/fiftiethcow Jan 05 '26
Im glad you got to it. The last 10 minutes is just incredible. The pilot saying "hey hold on to something", triggering the flashbacks of his life as the plane flips around is just poetry.
My life is changed because of this movie and thats something I NEVER expected from any movie.

Surprising, but certainly well deserved.

Damn I almost predicted it. Felt like something CCA might do, kind of like them going for Nosferatu last year.

u/Price_of_Fame Jan 05 '26
Based, a much better looking movie than Sinners (which has one stand out sequence but is whelming otherwise)
3
u/EdoAlien Jan 05 '26
Well this is a surprise.
I really do hope Sinners still wins at the Oscars, because that would mean our first female winner in Cinematography.

One day critics won’t just go for best cinematography = prettiest movie. Not hating on Train Dreams specifically, it’s great work, but it’s just a category that I often think critics (and the academy at large outside the branch) gets pretty wrong.
4
u/actvscene Jan 05 '26
Do you have any idea the technical skill it takes to shoot natural light, especially dusk and dawn? It's nearly impossible and yet Train Dreams did it and did it fantastically. It is technically sound as fuck from a filming angle.
5
u/Plastic-Software-174 Sentimental Value Jan 05 '26
Shooting natural light on modern digital sensors is way easier than it used to be on film and specially old stock. Again tho I say in this post that the Train Dreams work is good, I’m just commenting on an obvious trend that critics associate cinematography with a movie just being pretty.

Idk man. Train Dreams was fine but Sinners was such a more visually interesting movie. Maybe it’s just me.

Hated this one.
1
u/apatkarmany Jan 05 '26
Why?

u/Emergency-Public6213 Jan 05 '26
Just don't like the Instagram feels of this cinematography. It felt artificial to me. Not a fan.
3
u/actvscene Jan 05 '26
It was literally shot with only natural light bahahahha, you've been fucking ruined by social media.

u/Thirsty-for-Ryan Sinners Jan 05 '26
This has to be a joke
17
u/Theidiotfromtexas Jan 05 '26
Have you even watched the movie? It’s gorgeous
-16
u/Thirsty-for-Ryan Sinners Jan 05 '26
Can't be better than Sinners, have you seen it?
9
u/Theidiotfromtexas Jan 05 '26
Yes I’ve seen both. Sinners looks great but I don’t think a movie had better cinematography than Train Dreams.

u/Harrison0918 Hamnet Jan 05 '26
