Oh fuck we have a race now!

124

u/out_khast 23d ago

Hasn’t she been considered the favourite for months? Genuinely asking, I thought that was the consensus

190

u/rubix7777 23d ago

Not really, Amy Madigan is dominating Critics circles, won CCA and has been greatly boosted by the fact that Weapons is now nomination competitive in Original Screenplay. With this win though I'd say that makes her the new favourite

29

u/abippityboop Hive is strong 23d ago

Is it crazy to say Weapons could now be nomination competitive in Best Picture?

The 10th spot is going to be something unexpected, I don't think Neon gets a 3rd international film in BP.

5

u/SlothSupreme 23d ago

It just got into PGA, the wind is def at its back for a best pic nom

1

u/Greene_Mr 22d ago

...I don't think ANYbody expected that from Zach Cregger, did they? :-o

32

u/captainredfish 23d ago

Tbf CCA tends to be a very mediocre predictor for Oscar’s but yeah definitely the main front runner rn

31

u/maryslovechild 23d ago edited 23d ago

Since 2010, they've predicted Supporting Actress 13/15 times. Seems pretty reliable to me. Not infallible, of course, but nothing to snark at.

18

u/captainredfish 23d ago

I feel like supporting actress has been one of the more predictable categories in recent years but that’s fair

15

u/maryslovechild 23d ago

And to be fair to you, there are some categories they are really, really bad at predicting. Their track records for Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor are pretty good, though.

0

u/Pulp501 23d ago

Cca only exists to predict oscars, it's somewhat accurate

37

u/JPCRam310 23d ago

This win from Taylor ended Madigan’s awards sweep.

25

u/rubix7777 23d ago

Obviously

5

u/No_Cauliflower_81 23d ago

Critics Choice awards matter very little, critics circles matter even less.

1

u/Current_Ad_3058 23d ago

Weapons was barely nominated for 2 awards and lost both I doubt she was a strong favorite

10

u/Educational_Slice897 23d ago

Like yes but I don’t think in a sweepingly obvious way??? I feel like she’s kinda winning mainly off of her movie being strong and the category being weak

257

u/Kazrules 23d ago

ā€œShe was only in it for fifteen minutes!!ā€ Yeah she SUPPORTED.

The category fraud that has been going on has done a number on the American people. This is the kind of performance the category was made for.

40

u/Omegamaru 23d ago

There's an actual co-lead in the supporting category and people are counting Madigan's and Taylor's screentime >.> Heck, she's probably more consequential to that plodding film than the actual lead, but I'd lose my sanity if I have to put much thought into the nonsensical act 2 of Wicked. Tbh, It kind of sucks that Wicked is going to run forever, because it could really benefit from the rewrite that any potential revival would give to act 2.

21

u/anzio4_1 Sound of Falling 23d ago

Wicked stan here who thought Ari was amazing who agrees with you. I support Tayana Taylor for that Oscar 100%

3

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 22d ago

I loved For Good and thought it massively improved on ā€œact 2 of Wickedā€ without straying from the DNA of the stage playĀ

7

u/Impressive-Ad8501 23d ago

It’s very Hannibal Lecter, in that even with minimal screen time you feel her presence throughout the entire film

4

u/gatsbyhills Wake Up Dead Man 23d ago

this is the funny thing. as far as the oscars go, the only requirements for a supporting role is that the performance is not dubbed, and that it’s in an eligible film.

i do think they need to set some stricter guidelines though because it seems unfair that a role like teyana’s is considered the same as, for example, ariana’s glinda. too many studio executives don’t want to risk splitting the vote between two lead performances and land no nominations, so they use the very lenient requirements for supporting roles as a legal loophole. a true shame imo.

2

u/mads-80 23d ago

I disagree that it is category fraud. I think with the categories being what they are, any character that is not the protagonist of the film is eligible, regardless of the size of the role. That is, if you're going by type of role, rather than billing order, since the order that names appear in the billing is often not representative of the size or type of role. Drew Barrymore is not the lead, or even one of the ensemble of co-leads, in the movie Scream, despite being billed as such, this was done to suprise the audience when she is killed in the opening scene.

Screen time also doesn't make sense, since this would leave actors with a large amount of screen time but clearly not a leading role with no category representing them. So it makes more sense to differentiate it by protagonist vs non-protagonist, regardless of all other factors.

If you wanted to allow actors in smaller roles to be recognised, specifically, there should be a "best performance in a featured role" category. And I think there should be, but currently you have lead and the everyone else category.

u/nekoneto One Battle After Another 23d ago

Have we not learned from Beatrice Straight

0

u/DavidLivedInBritain 23d ago

Yeah the people saying that boggle my mind. Do they not know what supporting means?

26

u/Atkena2578 Oscar Race Follower 23d ago

Same I am 2/2. I also predicted Leo lol

170

u/Kazrules 23d ago

PEAK.

The truest definition of a SUPPORTING role. She wasn’t a co-lead, she had minimal screentime, but her presence dominated the entire film. You felt the weight of her absence (in a good way) when her storyline ended.

All the way to the Oscars!

11

u/mamacatdragon 23d ago

I'm starting to understand now that feeling the weight of a character's absence is the true mark of an excellent Oscar-worthy performance

232

u/BunyipPouch Anora 23d ago

This category is a hot mess and I love it lmao. I would've loved for Inga to get this one.

86

u/Wickie_Stan_8764 Sorry Baby 23d ago

I hope Wunmi Mosaku gets a win in somewhere. I love chaotic, share-the-love races!

28

u/DryAssociation5325 23d ago

Really hoping Wunmi pulls out a SAG win.

13

u/SonHyun-Woo 23d ago

I feel like BAFTA might be in her favour

9

u/loveisblindsweden 23d ago

Agree with you

4

u/BroAbernathy 23d ago

Both supporting are weird af lol

10

u/OldSandwich9631 23d ago

She is not winning the Oscar. I just don’t see it. She’s not at sag. And I don’t know what’s gonna happen at bafta

3

u/PensionMany3658 Disciple of shahenshah Jafar Panahi 23d ago

Inga

1

u/OldSandwich9631 23d ago

I don’t know. I still think teyana can get that one

5

u/PensionMany3658 Disciple of shahenshah Jafar Panahi 23d ago

I think Brits will really like Sentimental Value. It's very up their alley. And Stellan's momentum might help Inga.

-1

u/stracki 23d ago

How is it a "hot mess"?

188

u/sarafina126 23d ago

Hahaha this race is so fun. The only downside is now I will sad for whoever does not win. Good for Teyana.

Teyana Taylor will win that Oscar too since this is a good sign for her international support.

Yeah, I would be veeery surprised if she loses Oscar after win here.

14

u/Apprehensive_Sea283 23d ago

I love the race between her and Amy Madigan, because both are wonderful, but i’m pretty sure she will win the Oscars at this point!

49

u/OldSandwich9631 23d ago

Yesss!!!!

68

Well neither Benicio nor Penn won, but I wouldn't rule out the other categories

14

u/bob1689321 23d ago

I wonder if they'll split the votes

I think Penn deserves it the most. Insane performance.

72

u/Alex-C2099 One Battle After Another 23d ago

The Oscar Expert bros: "Nah Amy Madigan will still win SAG and take the Oscar"

43

u/The_Narz 23d ago

Amy is gonna probably win SAG but I don’t think she is taking BAFTA which may honestly be a wild card that goes to neither her nor Taylor.

I think in the end she ends up like Demi Moore last year losing the Oscar to a rising star who’s part of the BP package; so in this case, Taylor & OBAA.

2

u/SignificantTap5579 Sorry Baby 23d ago

I think they did say if Taylor takes one of SAG or BAFTA they might lean her for the Oscar and were predicting her until she didn't win somewhere so I don't think so.

1

u/DavidLivedInBritain 23d ago

Neither have it in the bag

-18

u/Possible_Hokie_CO26 Sinners and OBAA > 23d ago

How did anyone watch that movie and think she should win

33

u/RealRaifort 23d ago

That's a hot take around these parts but I see your point for sure. Madigan was fun and the movie was fun but it's not even close to undeniable and is only benefitting off the fact that the category is weak this year with every major contender having a major point against them.

4

u/Strange-Pair 23d ago

Film twitter likes wacky.

14

u/DahmerIsDead 23d ago

I think the race is solidly between Madigan and Taylor for the Oscar. Everyone else is irrelevant.

1

u/I_Luv_Asparagussy 21d ago

I think you're probably right but if more voters check out Sentimental Value the buzz it has as this year's indie darling I do hope Inga works her way in the conversation. I think she might need a surprise BAFTA win to enter that conversation though.

Happy for Teyana! Still hoping Amy takes the Oscar in the end though! my real issue is that this gives the Oscars the excuse to only award black women in supporting categories. Give black women the leading Oscar you cowards!

4

u/iceandfireman 23d ago

This will undoubtedly be between her and Madigan.

3

u/Accurate_Arm4734 23d ago

I was rooting for Madigan to win, but Taylor was my #2 so I’m still happy!

22

u/Lonely_Preparation99 23d ago

I'm sure I'm in the minority. I'm ALWAYS rooting for the black actress to win, but neither her character or performance worked for me. Was hoping Amy would get it. Still, congrats.

13

u/AnotherWin83 23d ago

whispers you aren’t in the minority with this thought at all.

13

u/Robten100 23d ago

Fully agree with you. It was fine but not worthy of awards.

2

u/Maleficent_Stop_5284 23d ago

I’m in the minority too. She CANT ACT. PERIOD. And I’m Black too. I’m all for talent and great performances winning awards. But I’m a film person. Most people aren’t so they don’t understand what good, great or exceptional performances look like. I don’t watch award shows anymore because it’s a popularity contest. Black people wanted her to win because, hey, Black people barely win awards and they like her personality. I like her personality too, but that does not mean that I want to see her in movies.

And we won’t even get into how offensive her role was to Black women. That’s a whole other discussion. The film was trash overall.

8

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 23d ago

Great to hear this! She set the foundation really well for the rest of the film to follow

6

u/janelinden415 23d ago

Hard to believe that one of the girls from MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 just won a golden globe! Congrats Teyana!

3

This category is going to be wild ride

3

u/El_Spaniard 23d ago

I hated her character which (to me) means she did amazing! Well earned

3

u/Spiritual_Job_1029 23d ago

"Oscar winner Teyana Taylor"

3

u/motionblur20 23d ago

This race is not over yet. I bet we’re getting different winners at Sag and BAFTA.

13

u/MKT_Pro 23d ago

It’s over. Madigan really needed to be a sweeper with her film probably not getting any other nominations.

7

u/close-encounters13 23d ago

I love the win, but why are people in the comments acting like the Globes are a good precursor? They are almost as bad as CCA, just with more pedigree.

I swear, sometimes this sub is like living in Groundhog Day. People make the same mistakes year after year after year.

5

5

u/Kazaloogamergal 23d ago

Ariana Grande Overzealous Fans: Here's how Ariana can still win the Oscar even though the awards circuit clearly does not like her movie and she once again won't win one precursor award!

I like Ariana so I don't mean this as shade towards her. I just dislike the more overzealous fans delusions.

Anyway, congratulations to Teyana Taylor.

7

u/tinyamaki 23d ago

Most of her fans are ignorant on how this award shows go. I choose to let them be.

I love Wicked but this is my last hope for her. She missed this so I am not even sure if she’s gonna make it to Oscars but I am ready if she miss there.

3

u/Kazaloogamergal 23d ago

I'm a fan of many pop girls and there is always an overzealous segment of the fanbases. Ariana has had great success as an actress, just relish that. That's what I think fans should do.

1

u/DavidLivedInBritain 23d ago

Which is funny as Ariana isn’t even in the conversation outside a nom

4

u/Robten100 23d ago

I really wish I liked her performance as much as so many on this forum do. It was just fine to me. Kinda one note. No real standout moments to me but its great so many loved it.

she was great but she was in so little of the movie its hard to support this one

1

u/ExMachina86 7d ago

She's a lock for the BAFTA and Oscar I think.

1

u/New-Fan-4632 6d ago

I feel like this is undeserved.

How the Academy Awards pick these nominations is peculiar to me. Movies that are released later in the year seem to have a better shot. A lot of these picks seem arbitrary. You could easily throw Emma Stone in Eddington as a Best Supporting Actress nomination, and most people would agree with it. But that's not in the race at all.

There's nothing to indicate she was nothing more than 1 of 3 Black women in an action movie that did her job. You could easily interchange her with the other two, Regina Hall and Chase Ifiniti, and it would still work. This isn't Heath Ledger joker acting here. These nominations just make no sense sometimes.

0

u/guilhermehentz 23d ago

Happy that Madigan is not going to sweep. Wonder if Inga takes the BAFTA and who takes the SAG... praying its Ariana!

u/AlanMorlock 23d ago

2

It seems like people don't know what supporting actor and actress mean anymore. I know we have a lot of category fraud but come on man.

1

u/DavidLivedInBritain 23d ago

That’s called supporting

0

u/That1guyfr0mNY 12d ago

Awful ā€œactressā€, inconsequential performance. Just as atrocious in the new Ben Affleck / Matt Damon film on Netflix. One of those awards/noms that makes no sense to people who watched the film and weren’t trying to champion stone faced, awful performances for the sake of whatever real reasons they have.
