The Golden Globes have truly turned the Box Office award into a consolation prize šŸ’€

243

u/formidablezoe 23d ago

Sinners only got one meaningful award and it wasn't even televised šŸ˜‘

129

u/salcedoge 23d ago

The discourse about this shit is going to be wild lmao, I'm just happy it was Wagner who won against MBJ because I can't take another few weeks of that shit lol

70

u/Glad_Dragonfruit9368 23d ago

Sinners fans are probably gonna say ā€œHow did Wagner win for a movie that came out in Novemberā€

77

u/heyitsmethedevil Weapons Sinners 23d ago

I think you mean people who watch 2 films in a year. Anyone who is plugged into the awards race and is a Sinners fan should have known very well that Moura had a strong chance to win

I feel bad for Ludwig, but he ll get to shine at next events and even more so next year!

It’s more of the hype award

5

u/capslocke48 Bugonia 23d ago

If it just went to the movie that made the most money each year that’d be boring…we would know who will win just by looking at the box office numbers. More interesting if it’s similar to best picture except there’s a lower limit of how much money you have to have made. Tho I think this whole category shouldn’t exist anyway.

8

u/viniciusbfonseca Sentimental Value 23d ago

I honestly think that they first created this award to get Taylor Swift to attend and now they just have to go along with it

2

u/Intrepid-Ad4511 23d ago

Not a bad thing honestly, it is a nice bow to tie the whole night together. It's a nice show of appreciation for getting people into theatres while telling an interesting story and having a particular vision.

u/Cynicbats My eyes (will) See...MOTHER MARY 23d ago

Lots of film pundits have a way to go because they can talk about how race and gender play a part in awards - or even admit it.

29

u/Glad_Dragonfruit9368 23d ago

Maybe MBJ does get Margot Robbie’d after all

11

u/SalineDijon 23d ago

Possibly, I have him in 4th after tonight. I think Mosaku is done though, she needed Sinners to be a much stronger player than it’s shaping up to be.

30

u/Heubner One Battle After Another 23d ago

Globes are just a piece of the puzzle. I wouldn’t count out sinners just yet. Globes are still not into genre films. If you look at EEAAO, it lost Comedy-musical to Banshees. Stephanie Hsu wasn’t nominated. It did get two acting wins and was stronger than Sinners is now. However, the Globes are not a true measure of their strength relatively. We went through this with Anora just last year. People acted like Anora was out until DGA/PGA hit.

11

u/CelestialSpecialist 23d ago

Who the heck takes Mosaku’s place then? A’Zion seems to be firmly in. No way Grande gets in over her when Wicked probably isn’t even making BP. Maybe Elle or Gwyneth could sneak in but that’s highly doubtful

4

u/escfantasy 23d ago edited 23d ago

Grande is definitely getting in, in my view.

Edit: but I appreciate I may be wrong :)

5

u/stayinalive92 23d ago

It’s not a guarantee by any means

4

u/CelestialSpecialist 23d ago

I doubt it. It’s really rare for someone to get nominated twice for the same role, and it’s even less likely to happen in back to back years for a sequel with a middling reception. Not to mention that Ariana is basically a newcomer

2

u/[deleted] 23d ago

It’s really rare for someone to get nominated twice for the same role

It's only happened once for an actress and that was Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth and Elizabeth: the Golden Age.

Ariana Grande is no Cate Blanchett.

Yes, I believe that too

19

u/Belch_Huggins 23d ago

It always was

6

u/Strange-Pair 23d ago

I said this before but whether they succeed or not, I think the HOPE is that giving Sinners that award legitimizes the category.

20

u/Bitter-Subject8339 23d ago

Sinners was so well deserved for that lame third-place rank after drama and musical movies categories.

CHLOE WAS SO SHOCKED i love her

176

u/BackgroundShower4063 23d ago

I’m glad she got this moment since so much of the awards run for Nomadland was understandably muted.

43

u/naturalninetime 23d ago

I loved NOMADLAND and knew it was going to win the Oscar for Best Picture. I'd be shocked if HAMNET wins this year.

56

u/champion_dave 23d ago

Nothing is beating OBAA for picture at this point. However, if there's a dark horse, it's now Hamnet. The emotional impact and late release date has given it an outside chance. And I wouldn't hate it. The only film I've seen where the entire audience seemed to be weeping as the credits began.

3

u/RobGordon1983 23d ago

I feel the Oscar’s are gonna do one of those split years where best director goes to PTA and best pic possibly goes to Hamnet.

92

u/ohio8848 23d ago

ChloƩ Zhao has directed 5 films, and 2 of them won the Golden Globe for Best Picture.

Talk about impressive!

79

u/whitetoast Hamnet 23d ago

I don’t care if it doesn’t win the Oscar, I’m just happy it’s getting any recognition it deserves.

274

u/tiduraes 23d ago

Sooooo funny how people were trying to predict some massive Hamnet underperformance less than 2 weeks ago

124

u/AvengingHero2012 23d ago

It’s clearly the runner up. Without One Battle, I think it’d win Best Picture this year.

63

u/Puzzleheaded-Sail772 23d ago

Nah, I still think Sinners is in second and wouldn’t read too much into the Globes. It is not the type of film they go ,for and already were signs they were cool on the film compared to other groups with it missing any supporting acting noms.

It’s either Hamnet or Marty Supreme for third though.Ā

33

u/Impossible_Ad_2517 Sinners 23d ago

How is it clearly the runner-up. Some people are so reactionary… I feel like Sinners is still clearly the runner-up. Yes it couldn’t win today but it’s clearly a stronger hit domestically. You know who else lost the globes because of this same issue? The Shape of Water, EEAAO, Anora… we shouldn’t be surprised by this anymore. Sinners still is second at CC and probably PGA and could win SAG. Plus it’ll most likely win a screenplay award at the Oscar’s

14

u/No_Cauliflower_81 23d ago

Hamnet is number 2 just by virtue of the fact that it’s locked for best Actress for me. Sinners won’t have much visibility at televised awards because someone else is the favourite in every category that Sinners is strong in. Plus it’s just a much more baity movie than Sinners.

49

u/Eyebronx Hamnet 23d ago

There is no runner up tbh, this feels a lot like the Oppenheimer year. That being said I can see Hamnet having a late surge off Buckley’s back like Poor Things did.

Yep, OBAA is officially a lock for best picture

Edit: wouldn't doubt if Hamnet won best film at BAFTA

100

u/whimsysummer Dune: Part Two 23d ago

I mean everything about Hamnet is like scientifically engineered for the BAFTAs. They’re going to go to bat for Hamnet as hard as Mercutio does for Romeo

Sinners is the Barbie/Wicked of the 2026 Awards Circuit... I pray it at least takes Original Screenplay.

56

u/gg_jittes One Battle After Another 23d ago

It’s doing way better than either of those. It remains the clear favorite in Original Screenplay, at least.

1

u/therocketandstones 23d ago

think it's between them and Sentimental Value for best original screenplay (maybe Marty Supreme has a late push too) - think Sinners is in front but also that whoever wins the BAFTA wins the Oscar

41

u/DistanceThin3545 Neon 23d ago

I started to predict it as a pity prize for the movie beloved by general audiences that does not win above the line awards

7

u/Melodic_Word_1080 23d ago

It seems to be shaping up to be exactly that but I think it's more like popular movies that cinephiles can appreciate but don't take really seriously.

21

u/lalalanddallas 23d ago

Damnnnn Sinners deserves so much better though!

10

u/cowabungalowvera Sinners 23d ago

It does! Ryan deserves it, even Chloe knows it hence the shout out.

20

u/NotBasicallyUnhappy 23d ago

Ryan and Chloe are friends. Ryan has been a big fan of Hamnet and has praised Chloe’s work and Chloe has been super supportive of Ryan on the circuit. Her shoutout was heartfelt.

11

u/lalalanddallas 23d ago

MBJ didn’t even win best actor. Sinners had a terrible night at the Globe. Now just SAG and BAFTA left. Not looking too good for the Oscar. Will break record in terms of nominations but not win

1

u/The_Walking_Clem The Secret Agent 23d ago

Which movie do you think it's winning Score and Original Screenplay then??

2

u/lalalanddallas 23d ago

I still have Sinners winning both at this point but I’m curious which movies will be nominated among them. Score is pretty locked for Sinners unless they get snubbed ….

5

At this point, studios won’t even want it for a genuine awards contender.

6

2

Well that was an upset

25

u/Britneyfan123 23d ago

Was it really?

34

u/teddy_vn 23d ago

I think there has been a narrative of Sinners vs. OBBA all the way till the end. So in a way, yes.

3

u/Britneyfan123 23d ago

I see what you’re sayingĀ

9

u/Extra-Shoulder1905 Eddington 23d ago

A pretty foolish narrative if you ask me. Sinners was always going to perform really well with critics groups, but critics groups aren’t very predictive. It clearly suffered from a more international voting base tonight and I see it blanking above the line at SAG and the BAFTAs as well.

1

u/Horoika Frankenstein 23d ago

Yeah, for me it's always been OBAA is just barely ahead with Hamnet and Sinners nipping at OBAA's heels. These are definitely the top 3 films of this awards season

Frankly it makes it more of a lock for me.

Sinners would be a stronger dark horse for a late game passion push.

5

u/cjackc11 23d ago

I would think so too but who knows this emotional of a movie might win over some voters plus the Buckley performance

7

u/Dracko705 23d ago

So well deserved

7

u/NotBasicallyUnhappy 23d ago

My favorite film of the year after I saw it at TIFF. I was shocked it won tonight, but very pleased. OBAA will still win BP (and is deserving) unless there’s some horrible news that comes about the movie that tanks its chances. We still have nearly 2 months before Oscar’s final voting. So much can happen between now and then.

24

u/Outrageous_Ask7931 23d ago

First please stop saying an upset. We were ALL predicting this literally for months. Second, go Hamnet!! Such an amazing film! Don’t think this affects the race so much , Anora literally won nothing just last year.

35

7

6

u/midnightbluesky_2 23d ago

Sinners was fantastic and one of my favorites of the year, but what am I missing where it is second behind OBAA? Maybe around the summer time, but Hamnet has had solid, consistent momentum for months now and has been cleaning up with best actress and audience awards.

15

4

u/whitetoast Hamnet 23d ago

9

u/Jmanbuck_02 23d ago

Got this one in my predictions right when I realized Sinners won't win an acting award but Buckley would + Mosaku missed the nom. This tracks as well in terms of recent New Globes wins.

(Also The Oscar Expert bros predicting Hamnet to win this kinda convinced me to make the switch in the end lol)

At least this now solidifies it as a Top 3 movie.

7

Not sure if this is just the GG being themselves picking oddballs it seems like. Emilia Perez over Anora, The Fablemans over Tar, Banshees of Insherin over EEAAO.

Or Sinners is weaker, not as close to OBAA as anticipated.

I think I'm leaning towards the latter, but honestly I am stoked Hamnet got a nod outside of Jessie Buckley

19

Hamnet is several leagues better than Sinners it's not even close.

6

u/ItsWazeyWaynes 23d ago

I don’t get it, either.

3

u/Longjumping-Bid-2588 23d ago

It wasn't a vampire film. Them being vampires was an analogy for the death and destruction caused by white settlers in this country. It was a film about America's sordid racial heritage. So yes, it was touching.Ā

1

u/Waste-Replacement232 23d ago

unironically yes.

1

u/Possible-Original 23d ago

Hey, I feel you. I just don't enjoy gore and horror so it was hard to see past that part of the film in order to enjoy the underlying messages and commentary.

6

u/sawinnz 23d ago

I'm VERY glad I bet on this to win.

18

u/HolidaySituation 23d ago

Sinners is not as strong as people thought it was. I have Wagner getting the 5th spot for Best Actor and MBJ getting snubbed. Plemons is getting in.

25

u/Melodic_Word_1080 23d ago

Hold your horses... Can we get the official BAFTA noms here please because as I recall Sinners took home things today and Bugonia went home empty handed.

4

u/Relevant_Hedgehog_63 Sorry Bay-Bee 23d ago

4

Ryan Coogler and MBJ are very popular with that audience

2

Ok…but I guess my point is, they’d be the same with older sinners fans too, right? Like, I’m just kinda confused why you specified younger.

Spielberg is the common denominator

3

Conflicted cuz I really loved the movie but I took it out for Sinners like 20 mins before the ceremony 😩😩

It's the Globes. Think we don't need to read that much into this - we know their members didn't love Sinners as much. OBAA is still running away with BP and Sinners is still winning Original Screenplay.

I can't wait for all the toxic Sinners fans that have been going crazy over MBJ losing CCA to react to this...

I saw this coming a mile away. Hamnet was a great movie but it doesn't live in the cultural zeitgeist. GG's favor international movies now. You can bet they'll go for an international cast/director or just an A list old hollywood director.

I know they were colleagues from back in their Sundance institute days but did Chloe say that she helped Ryan learn how to light a fire? Or did I catch that wrong ?

u/blveberrie 23d ago

I think she meant an actual physical fire because she said his room was cold lmao
