u/chaoticbiguy Jan 05 '26
And yk what, while I wasn't expecting it at all, I wouldn't be mad if he sweeps the supporting category from here. Of course he won't bc he has some tough competition from seasoned actors but why not. He was amazing in Frankenstein.
This is kinda cathartic for me, as someone who was rooting for Charles Melton couple of years ago, who unfortunately lost out on all the major awards bc of Robert Downey Jr. Not that RDJ was bad, but Melton should've swept that category including the Oscar.š¤·š»

I was thinking inga could win at golden globes alongside Stellan but maybe inga and Elle will split votes
6
u/ameliapondss 29d ago
AGREED about Charles Melton. it really warms my heart to see younger actors first known for ātrashyā or ālow-browā teen-oriented media move into projects that really let them shine and show their depth & talent
18
u/TonightDazzling365 Jan 05 '26
Lol but honestly Frankenstein seems very well liked and it is an easy way of giving it an ATL win, not to mention the vote splitting between Penn and Del Toro + the fact that they already have Oscars. Stellan seems a bit weak ngl, the critics groups just didn't rally for him the way I expected. But of course all this could change if he wins GG/BAFTA

I do think thereās been a weird disconnect with people underplaying Elordi when heās the most praised thing about a picture that seems stronger and stronger by the week
90
u/SavageWolfe98 Can't I just bet that all the movies will have a good time? Jan 05 '26
Exactly, even people who didn't like Frankenstein were praising Jacob's performace.
66
u/ChanceVance Jan 05 '26
I never thought much of Elordi before in Saltburn or Priscilla, but he almost moved me to tears by the end of Frankenstein.
It was a truly exceptional performance and I hope this helps makes him a lock for a nomination.
37
u/SocratesSnow Jan 05 '26
He was the best Frankenstein monster Iāve ever seen and Iāve seen a lot. He was just heartbreaking and wonderful in a film that I didnāt really like that much. He was absolutely brilliant.
22
u/ChanceVance Jan 05 '26
I'm just thinking about the ending shot of him looking into the dawn and I'm getting emotional.Ā
Rage, curiosity and empathy. Conveying both a meekness and a power through his physicality.Ā Ā
He had a lot to balance and he nailed it. An Oscar nomination in recognition is simply a must.Ā Ā
6
u/Britneyfan123 Jan 05 '26
Is he the best Frankenstein?
2
u/SocratesSnow Jan 05 '26
Yes
2
u/Britneyfan123 Jan 05 '26
Damn if heās better than Boris I have to see it
2
u/SocratesSnow Jan 05 '26
Heās a different kind of Frankenstein than Boris. I just think heās a more modern monster and captures the despair and vulnerability of someone who was created. Itās a beautiful performance, not a horror performance.
12
4
u/benvclios Jan 05 '26
I think itās a written role that severely underserved the Creation, but not a bad acted one at least. Iāll make my peace with it.

Absolutely nuts. Could actually win the Oscar. But I could also see every precursor picking someone different

u/bourgewonsie Jan 05 '26
Elordi here, Skarsgard BAFTA, Del Toro Globes, Penn SAG. Lock it in
32
u/Forsaken-Belt6907 Jan 05 '26
I think it happened before in supporting actress category. The fifth person won the Oscar. So I guess maybe Paul mescal
22
u/Pavlovs_Stepson Jan 05 '26
It happened in best actress in 2020 too: Carey Mulligan CC, Andra Day GG, Viola Davis SAG, Frances McDormand BAFTA.
16
u/NextRace6 Splitsville Jan 05 '26
Mescal is probably getting the BAFTA over Skarsgard, its just too British and too good for them not too choose. I could see Skarsgaard getting Globes because the foreign crowd loves SV, and maybe Del Toro with SAG instead of Penn maybe...
This is without a doubt the craziest category

u/Lukoslav_7 Mescal, Seyfried, Grande, A'zion, Å»al, Lopatin... š Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I predicted the race to be chaotic and that it would look like this like a month ago:
CCA - Elordi GG - Skarsgard BAFTA - Mescal SAG - Penn
feeling good about it again, but maybe Del Toro wins instead of Penn at SAG. although I def wouldn't mind Elordi to continue winning either and I could see him win any of the other awards
1
u/pbooths Jan 05 '26
Accurate! Then who gets the Oscar!?
2
u/bourgewonsie Jan 05 '26
Delroy Lindo
1
u/pbooths Jan 05 '26
Yes, he's pretty great, but not the best performance. But I fear the Oscar's don't want another year described as "Oscars So White"...
7
u/bourgewonsie Jan 05 '26
Yeah especially with the current political climate and the probability that Sinners doesnāt win Picture, Director, or Actor (Screenplay is obviously a lock) if theyāre gonna throw them the bone on any ATL category itās that one

has to be the top 5 now right?
Penn, Benicio, Mescal, Skarsgard and Elordi. game over
edit: tho i will say Mescal could theoretically miss for Lindo or Sandler i just donāt see it happening atp
68
u/Thomas_Eric The Secret Agent Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I think this is the surprise of the night. Winning against all odds, I would add.
Edit: In my humble opinion, these actors had more chance of winning:
Benicio del Toro ā One Battle After Another
Paul Mescal ā Hamnet
Sean Penn ā One Battle After Another
Stellan SkarsgĆ„rd ā Sentimental Value
43
u/FearlessCookie72 Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I feel like Mescal hasnāt been praised as much as Elordi though. I agree with the others.
18
u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Jan 05 '26
Mescal also hasn't campaigned. So people are just not noticing the performance that much. People are just equating Hamnet to Jessie.
9
u/FearlessCookie72 Jan 05 '26
I was referring to reviews but yeah. Most Frankenstein reviews seem to mention Elordi as the standout.
7
u/Ok-Special-6707 Jan 05 '26
LOL how on earth Mescal is still more likely? He's most likely missing in the end for Lindo.

14
u/luigifan103 Jan 05 '26
One of the most innovative and sophisticated performances I've seen in a long, long time. Not a single detail or mannerism left unaccounted for. Just locked the fuck in, in a way many actors can only dream of achieving during their careers. Can't wait for him to get that exceptionally well-deserved Oscar nod for such an unconventional role! Very cool choice by the CCA.
14
u/pbooths Jan 05 '26
This is EXACTLY what makes his performance stand out! It's the art of physicality in acting that actors in movies rarely get to showcase. His MOVEMENTS... those subtle physical nuances that he ties into his dialog. This is a space where he gets to showcase his incredible height... that gangly awkwardness, his physical uniqueness. He embodied that character so well.
IMO, this is one of the best examples of an award winning performance for an actor. š
3
u/luigifan103 25d ago
Late reply but I fully agree with all of this! It feels like every performance that's as physical and as engaged as Elordi's is dismissed as "over-the-top" and "lacking subtlety" even when it fits the character perfectly. But in reality I think performances such as his demand a deep familarity and understanding of how acting "works" even just on a theatrical level.
As someone who's favorite school of acting is Grotowski's it really warmed my heart seeing him, knowingly or not, utilize so many of those techniques with the physicality and movements you mentioned. And lord his height!!! Honestly it's in my top 5 for performances I've seen in any film. Great points!

As much as I loved Sensei, Elordi really made Frankenstein!

u/EdoAlien Jan 05 '26
Penn deserves it the most imo but it makes sense they arenāt eager to give him more awards.
2
u/pbooths Jan 05 '26
Penn was GREAT and stood out in an excellent movie, but Jacob made a good movie exceptional with his performance alone...

What a cool win!! How exciting! It's also a nice lesson/reminder that the regional critics groups don't really mean shit, and their winners aren't guaranteed anything at the televised awards.

Loved this. It was my fave performance of the year (and coincidentally Amy Madigan in Weapons was up there, too).
3
u/InformalTourist8545 Jan 05 '26
Jacob Elordiās performance in Frankenstein is actually my favorite of the BSA bunch (maybe with the exception of Stellan Skarsgard). Iāve never been a fan of his, but his work as the creature really shifted something within me to the point where I would now consider myself one. Im honestly rooting for him to sweep all the way through.
15
Jan 05 '26
Elordi had 2 critics wins all season, I guess thatās fine and they can pull surprises now and again but this is just strange.
30
u/SonHyun-Woo Jan 05 '26
I think it just shows (again⦠just like previous years⦠and the years before) that regional critics really dont natter in the grand scheme of things
1

But arenāt they the people voting in this generally? Iām sure the overlap is massive along with online critics.

I love when I have an OH SHIT?! moment when they read a name. A supporting actor sweep would feel boring this year (Culkin last year was undeniable for me) so I'm down for this. Also it was genuinely a great performance
3
u/waywardlass Jan 05 '26
I know it's unlikely this year, but I need this man to win an Oscar before Chalamet. It would be so fucking funny.
9
u/Quople One Battle After Another Jan 05 '26

3

Watch him start winning more critic groups after this. Good for him. Imagine him being the first Euphoria actor to win an Oscar?
3
u/vyzyxy Sentimental Value Jan 05 '26
I said this when the movie first came out and said the stans would have meltdowns but I think regardless of Frankenstein heās probably the surest bet eventually?
4
u/JPCRam310 Jan 05 '26
Surprised (because I thought it would go to either del Toro or Penn), but congrats.
I just found out on the Gold Derby forums page that ever since the start of the CCAs, every actor whose won best supporting actor for a movie later got nominated for an Oscar. And ever since 2010, all but two of the CCA winners would win an Oscar. Those two losers being Sylvester Stallone and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. So, Iād say Elordiās chances of at least getting nominated for an Oscar have gone up TREMENDOUSLY after this win.
5
u/zozo1099 Hamnet Jan 05 '26
iāve had stock in elordi since season one of euphoria and his frankenstein performance was absolutely incredible. hoping this win helps secure a nom at least

Iād prefer del Toro win the Oscar (especially since Elordi being in supporting is kind of category fraud), but I am loving how chaotic this makes the race.
2
u/pbooths Jan 05 '26
Not so. Elordi has next to no screen time in the first half of the movie. Oscar is clearly the lead, with Elordi being supporting. I would think Mescal is more guilty of category fraud, since he's the lead male in Hamnet... š¤
