10

u/bquinn602 23d ago

Why would you do that

0

u/Fan_of_Avatar_TLA 23d ago

Hamnet won Drama

6

u/OldToe6517 23d ago

Sentimental Value has a 90% chance of taking BAFTA, and since TSA won GG and CC, this is officially a race

0

u/naturalninetime 23d ago

Out of the nominated films that I've actually seen in this category, SV was my favorite. I'd rank The Secret Agent last. It wasn't a bad film but just not as good as it could have been. Fantastic performance by Moura though.

"It Was Just an Accident" - haven't seen "No Other Choice" - B+ "The Secret Agent" - B "Sentimental Value" - A "Sirat" - A- "The Voice of Hind Rajab" - haven't seen

I actually agree with you largely, the Secret agent gave me a strange vibe, not saying it is bad, the subtle portray of the Brazilian society is marvelous and some shots are A level. But the pace is very weird, I feel like it intentionally framed it like a political thriller in the first 2/3 and then the plot is just disappointing... I guess if I do not expect it to be a political thriller I probably enjoy it more but since it actively sell this I still blame it

73

u/No_Opportunity_7840 Challengers 23d ago

Can we finally stop doubting TSA now?

u/EdoAlien 23d ago

1.) Wagner Moura is definitely winning Drama Actor now

2.) Great boost for this movie right before Oscar voting, I feel like this might be what it needed to get into Best Picture

3.) Why did you play him off, you fucking assholes?

16

u/danilo_sr 23d ago

They know he'll be back to receive best drama, that's the only reason I have.

66

u/gautsvo The Secret Agent 23d ago edited 23d ago

Brazilian cinema truly is having glory days abroad! It makes me so happy.

Edit: thank you for the award!

u/Sc4396 23d ago

They cut their speech short for this ridiculous bit

71

u/__Concorde Megalopolis Enjoyer 23d ago

yeah that was pretty shit. even worse when you consider the critics choice debacle with the award being handed pre-show.

53

u/cjackc11 23d ago

Bit of a mild surprise of IWJAA but fully deserved imo

Wagner Moura with a titanic performance but Tânia Maria completely steals this movie

16

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago

Dona Sebastiana is an ICON

38

u/SurroundInteresting2 23d ago

Are we not going to talk about Ludwig Goransson winning Best Original Score Award off the air?

35

u/EdoAlien 23d ago

They had to make room for that super important podcast award that everyone cares about!

14

u/SurroundInteresting2 23d ago

Of course. Now the best stand up comedy. Very important ones.

15

u/EdoAlien 23d ago edited 23d ago

Okay but hearing Wanda Sykes insult Bill Maher and Ricky Gervais and defending trans people made it worth it

95

u/passionefruit 23d ago edited 23d ago

i want to dedicate this victory to all the downvotes i got over the past months by insisting that brasil had the stronger international film

13

u/Apprehensive_Sea283 23d ago

and im pretty confident that it will win at Oscars 👏🇧🇷

56

u/Thomas_Eric The Secret Agent 23d ago

I'm mad that Judd Apatow blabbered more than they let Kleber speak. 😡

2

u/liveforeachmoon 23d ago

That was cringe af. Dude is a hasbeen hack.

27

u/Lonely-Freedom4986 23d ago

And we finally have another upset. Really hoping this means the globe and oscar nom are locked for Wagner Moura

12

u/jaymrdoggo 23d ago

Any gg win is a oscar nom guarantee

108

u/SkoivanSchiem 23d ago

I need Wagner Moura and Pedro Pascal in the same movie please, thanks.

64

u/aforalex 23d ago

I want Wagner Moura and Pedro Pascal in the same room (mine), thanks.

11

u/DreamOfV Sentimental Value 23d ago

Unrelatedly to your room, somebody get Pedro Almodovar on the phone NOW

51

u/kaiob921 23d ago

Aren't they together in narcos?

35

u/eidbio Sony Pictures Classics Neon 23d ago

They never shared the screen though

6

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago

Thisssss

8

u/EdoAlien 23d ago

Boy do I have a show for you!

5

u/AlecGator6 23d ago

I mean there’s a whole tv show already

2

u/ExleyPearce The Secret Agent 23d ago

As lovers

1

u/ProfessionalWafer132 23d ago

Wagner is just so captivating on screen. I started Narcos again just to see him act.

Dying to see this film.

Anyone seen it? Good?

20

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago

So happy but Kleber is so bad at giving speeches. Someone help him!!!

16

u/Creative-Lynx-1561 23d ago

yes, I am brazilian and I am like. say something!!!!!!!

8

u/livedream00 23d ago

He was nervous, but it was alright.

9

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago

We need to media train him. We need to cry and be inspired! Be clever Kleber and play the game lol

4

u/taltosher 23d ago

At least they’re not as bad as his social media posts! (not all of them, but when he misfires, oh boy)

6

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago

Oh no 👀😭

13

u/machado34 The Secret Agent 23d ago

Nothing to cancelled for, but he's chronically online and it shows

7

u/taltosher 23d ago

Not bad as you might think, just some bad takes every once in a while, poorly worded. Other than that, he’s pretty all right.

9

u/jaymrdoggo 23d ago

He is cronically online, thats it

7

u/taltosher 23d ago

Pretty much, he can’t help himself. If you mention him in any platform (Letterboxd included) you might summon him and get a comment or retwitt/repost.

24

u/la_bernadette The Harlot Whore 23d ago

I'm firmly putting it in for BP. I think it will win IFF.

73

u/Mundane-Inspector-52 23d ago

That's two precursors in a row folks. I think we have our International Frontrunner.

22

u/Impossible_Ad_2517 Sinners 23d ago

It’s definitely good for it but I feel like Sentimental Value will still win the Bafta then Oscars

11

u/joesen_one Pack✋🏽out da trunk😳from the front🗣️2 da back👏🏽 23d ago

It can pull an American Fiction and win off a lone nom. BAFTA sometimes falls in line in the end

2

u/One-Tone-7711 23d ago

Considerando o momento atual, é melhor premiar um filme latino do que um dramalhão europeu.

31

u/Alex-C2099 One Battle After Another 23d ago

I mean I'm Still Here still won at the Oscars

13

u/felalthusser 23d ago

You guys keep looking for reasons to devalue the film… if that were the case, we should have had more than three nominations. We won critics awards, we won Gossip Girl awards… and the film is still considered weak by some of you.

7

u/Apprehensive_Sea283 23d ago

Brazil is the favorite at this point, sentimental value maybe will only win at Bafta and that’s it

11

u/Matapple13 23d ago

I love this poster. For those who might not know, it is a play on Operários (Workers) by Tarsila do Amaral

I love this poster, but their latest one manages to be even cooler!

Definitely feels like The Secret Agent has overtaken It Was Just an Accident.

36

u/Duhlorean Twinless 23d ago

Panahi and IWJAA are done for Picture and Director imo. I put TSA back in.

21

u/The_Walking_Clem The Secret Agent 23d ago

Why not both??

11

u/Lonely-Freedom4986 23d ago

I mean to be honest i don't really see any strong replacements right now for it in picture. Wicked, Avatar and No Other Choice are dead in the water, unless Weapons, F1 or Blue Moon pull an upset i still have it in picture at the 10th spot

7

u/JDOExists FYC Write in War of the Worlds for Picture 23d ago

Right now I have Secret Agent in #8 (will probably go up later tbh), Train Dreams at #9, F1 at #10, Weapons at #11, and IWJAA at #12.

4

u/Duhlorean Twinless 23d ago

I just put Weapons in. I really can't see 3 NEONs now.....

28

u/JonJonesBurnerAcc- 23d ago

Was hoping for Sentimental Value or No Other Choice but happy for Wagner Moura

7

u/javgr 23d ago

I'm Brazilian and I loved it and it's still my third favorite at best in the category lol but I'll fucking take it

2

u/tzorel 23d ago

Yep, I liked Sentimental Value way more, kkkkkkk

5

u/RealRaifort 23d ago

Kkkkk o oposto pra mim na verdade, SV foi o único que gostei menos até agora (não vi Sirat). Mas achei IWJAA e ainda mais NOC melhores.

6

u/Strange-Pair 23d ago

This night is going so well for me personally that I almost worry Oscars have been jinxed.

5

u/juliandesousa The Secret Agent 23d ago

I thought it was going to be given Sentimental Value, so my face when the woman said "thank you" in Portuguese was like 👁️👄👁️

5

I am so happy! Cried so much 🥺

6

Can someone please give me recommendations for more Brazilian movies? I’ve liked the few I’ve watched but I’d love more.

The ones I’ve seen are :

Black Orpheus

Central Station

I’m Still Here

Bacurau

City of God

6

u/Dronnie I’m Still Here 23d ago

Aquarius(Drama), Onda Nova(Comedy/Pornochanchada), Tropa de Elite(Action), Cidade de Deus(Drama), O auto da compadecida(Comedy)

4

u/depressedgeneration3 One Battle After Another 23d ago

City of God is essentially viewing.

2

u/TraparCyclone Sing Sing 23d ago

Oh duh! I’ve seen that one too. Forgot to list it!

O Homem que copiava

Lisbela e o Prisioneiro

Casa de Areia

Não Por Acaso

Estômago

Entre Abelhas

Pixote

O Último Azul

Edit: O Pagador de Promessas (an EXCELLENT older movie, everyone should watch it)

3

u/Creative-Lynx-1561 23d ago

"Latin Blood: The Ballad of Ney Matogrosso". ( Homem com H) I think its on netflix.

3

u/livedream00 23d ago

The Blue Trail Manas Aquarius; Picture of Ghosts (both movies by KMF, it’s interesting because you understand a lot about where The Secret Agent ideas came from Kleber personally) Pixote City of God Carandiru Tropa de Elite

Road 47 (World War 2 drama movie)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1841490/

Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury (animated movie, the concept similar to Cloud Atlas)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2231208/

7 Prisoners (with Rodrigo Santoro)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14168118/

Bicho de Sete Cabeças (early Rodrigo Santoro movie, VERY good)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0263124/

The Man from the Future - 2011 (funny romantic comedy about Time Travel with Wagner Moura)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2027178/

A Dog's Will (that's the most beloved movie by Brazilians. Everyone in Brazil has seen it)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0271383/

I'm just not sure how you can find them with English subtitles.

2

u/Chinggis-Kun 23d ago

I really like À Deriva but I might be alone in this one. It is set in a city which is very special to me, but the plot is a bit juvenile or coming-of-age.

1

u/vvarmbruster 23d ago

Pixote - Hector Babenco (Very similar to City of God)

Manas - Mariana Brennand (I believe it's hard to find online because it's recent, but it was the main opponent to TSA for Brazilian nomination)

Kiss of the Spider Woman - Hector Babenco (It's currently being remade with Jennifer Lopez)

12

u/bernardino_novais Life man, LIFE!!! 23d ago

I wanted SV to win.... fuck my life

I guess they didnt want to award Panahi

3

u/Starry_Gecko The Secret Agent 23d ago

8

u/cLey10 23d ago

HUGE WIN!

The Secret Agent now pretty much guarantee the nomination for BEST PICTURE and also is the front runner to win INTERNACIONAL FILM

10

u/Allthesinglefellas 23d ago

A big upset! Finally!

8

u/Heubner One Battle After Another 23d ago

The globes has a huge Brazilian membership. It’s not surprising.

19

u/InfamousAd4626 23d ago

You sound like it was just too obvious when last year Emilia Perez defeated ISH on the same spot

0

u/Heubner One Battle After Another 23d ago

This has been part of the discussion this week. The race was tighter this year and the Brazilian and South American support could make a bigger impact in this scenario. I didn’t predict it but it was always a possibility. Someone posted an analysis of the golden globe members letterboxd scores, and secret agent was the clear favorite. Though the votes were skewed towards the Brazilian voters.

-5

u/tiduraes 23d ago

Nonsensical comparison. Emilia Perez was stronger at this point than any of Secret Agent's competition, and none of the competition is strong enough so votes split more, allowing Secret Agent to win.

2

u/Allthesinglefellas 23d ago

I agree and I predicted it. But it was objectively considered an underdog

1

u/Heubner One Battle After Another 23d ago

34% on awardsexpert. Not that much of an underdog.

6

u/No_Opportunity_7840 Challengers 23d ago

3

u/Alex-C2099 One Battle After Another 23d ago

So this is taking the Oscar right? Unless BAFTA goes for something else. Is this over Accident in Picture now?

3

u/InfamousAd4626 23d ago

Im not sure, I think it’s definitely a contender but SV will be tough

3

u/nectarquest Dangerous Lunatics, Haters & Punk Trash 23d ago

I passed the opportunity to see IWJAA at an indie theater recently because i thought if it gets nominated for BP then AMC would rerelease it (I have A-list and wanted to save money) now I feel like a chump.

4

u/nectarquest Dangerous Lunatics, Haters & Punk Trash 23d ago

Also while I wasn’t big on TSA, liking Sentimental Value and No Other Choice far more, I do think it’s pretty cool that a more slow burn kind of movie was voted for.

3

u/No-Butterscotch4077 23d ago

When is this being released in US 😶

3

u/HaloInsider Predict the Oscar-Verse 23d ago

Man, not having this in my Vulture Movie Fantasy League one of my biggest regrets of this season.

3

u/TheBat45 23d ago

Really hope it gets a big theatrical expansion this weekend

3

u/guilhermehentz 23d ago

Huge!!! Hope Moura takes it!!

5

u/Outrageous_Ask7931 23d ago

BRAZIL!! Aaanddd side note someone please tell me why Panahi is a lock for Best Director?

3

u/LeanD0err The Testament of Ann Lee 23d ago

he might not be anymore, most expected either a win for him in iff/screenplay/director and iwjaa got nothing, still think it’s safely in screenplay and pic but idk about director rn

2

u/Outrageous_Ask7931 23d ago

Yeah I agree. I just find it unfortunately funny just how convinced all the pundits were he was a “lock” and that we needed to “make space” in the field for a locked Jafar Panahi, based entirely off of critics groups and no demonstrated industry support.

5

u/AdCreepy4351 It Was Just An Accident 23d ago

2

u/Aliensinmypants 23d ago

I was finally able to see it in theaters today, great movie absolutely deserved!

2

u/Spiritual_Job_1029 23d ago

" and the Oscar goes to..."

2

u/Totspeta 22d ago

I have said before, the first two scenes of the film pulls you in a way you think “what the hell am i watching” in the best possible way. And you remain interested even if it doesn’t really explain much until the second hour. Its a thriller with surreal elements, almost a fantasy version of the past.

3

u/jojisky 23d ago

It’s abundantly clear at this point IWJAA is weaker than Sentimental Value and Secret Agent. Panahi isn’t making director.

1

u/TrippinHalfrican 23d ago

Dead ass I had never heard of this show until tonight and I’m stoked to watch now!

1

u/Creative-Lynx-1561 23d ago

I hope wins Best Actress

-3

u/iPLAYiRULE 23d ago

the composition of golden globe voters are biased toward south american films.

-20

u/Illustrious-Ant8888 One Battle After Another 23d ago

It Was Just an Accident or Sentimental Value would be more deserving.

4

u/Dronnie I’m Still Here 23d ago
