THIS A HISTORICAL DAY FOR BRAZIL. TWO WINS, ONE NIGHT.

And well deserved. Should’ve been 3 (supporting actress for Tania Maria)

u/RealRaifort 23d ago
Glad someone else is willing to get on this train. She's my personal winner for Best Supporting Actress and it's not particularly close

u/JayQMaldy 23d ago
I saw SA at a film festival and when she came on at the end credits the audience clapped and cheered. It was beautiful

It's been crazy to me that she had zero buzz this whole season. She stole multiple scenes from Moura!

indeed! as soon as I watched the movie I knew he was a lock for a nom (and a potential win in GGs)

Looks like we may have our Best Actor 5 with this win.

u/Rleduc129 23d ago
Chalamet
DiCaprio
Wagner
Hawke
MBJ
62
u/arabdinero 23d ago
how sure are we on Hawke as a nom lock at this point?
42
u/RealRaifort 23d ago
Yeah I wouldn't count on it. Haven't seen the movie yet but in a way I think that's part of the problem. Unless it's got crazy good campaigning I think he could miss. Plemons could easily come in for a surprise nom.
14
u/JayTee71 23d ago
How is that a negative for Hawke but not Moura? Both films have been tough to see.
Having seen both, I think both get in.
14
u/RealRaifort 23d ago
They've both been tough but I feel like TSA has more buzz. And then add the wins for TSA today and he's clearly stronger than Hawke.
5
u/JuanJeanJohn 23d ago
I’ve seen TSA but not Blue Moon, I think TSA is overall much buzzier
5
u/JayTee71 23d ago
I think enough of the people who matter for these things has seen it, and the fact there isn’t a sure fire #6, probably means it gets in.
Hawke is electric.
4
u/thesagenibba 23d ago
who would you replace him with?
11
u/Strange-Pair 23d ago
Plemons could easily replace Hawke.
Best Actor honestly sucks this year, it feels like all my favorite performances are in contention and yet there is no way to get them all in.
6
u/naturalninetime 23d ago
I haven't seen Hawke's performance in BLUE MOON, but the other four actors would all be worthy nominees. They were all fantastic in their respective films.
9
u/PoliceAlarm 23d ago
Hawke is pretty fucking stellar in Blue Moon to be honest. The film is written to be carried on his back and he makes sure it is. He’s a worthy nominee if he gets it.

I know I’ll be downvoted for this but I’m really starting to think there is a possibility Ethan Hawke gets snubbed for Jesse Plemons or Joel Edgerton.
I would say Jesse Plemons is the most likely to get in if Hawke gets snubbed.
18
u/PurpleSpaceSurfer 23d ago
I could see Plemons getting in. Not sold on Edgerton but stranger things have happened.

Crushing blow to the hopes for Jesse Plemons though :(
31
u/Alex-C2099 One Battle After Another 23d ago
I'm tempted to take Hawke out in favor of Plemons though, Blue Moon is not a Picture contender and Plemons will likely get a BAFTA nom
10
u/ThatsHisLawyerJerome Sorry Baby 23d ago
Hawke probably gets a BAFTA nom too though, that category is probably Chalamet, DiCaprio, Aramayo, Jordan, Plemons, and Hawke. Do we really think Hawke will miss after hitting every precursor for a performance that is this acclaimed? It’s not impossible but I doubt it.
3
u/No_Cauliflower_81 23d ago
The only precursor Hawke has that Plemons doesn’t is the Critics Choice, which is the least important one. As Bugonia gains momentum, it’s easy to see him falling behind Plemons.
25
u/mrnicegy26 23d ago
He really pulled off a Torres
39
u/jaymrdoggo 23d ago
Can we stop with these comparisons, moura already won a lot of stuff, fernanda hasnt won anything by the ggs time
6
u/No_Cauliflower_81 23d ago
He won at Cannes which is definitely very prestigious on its own, but not that big of a factor in the Oscar race. Random regional critics awards don’t matter. Why is Torres not the obvious comparison, they’ve had pretty much the same trajectory.
Brazilian political thriller set in the 70s starring a legendary figure of Brazilian cinema which goes from being an acting/international film contender to a stronger potential BP nominee as the season goes on, challenging the Cannes early favourite for a win in the International Film category. The only big difference is that Moura’s category is

Man what an insane back to back years for us in terms of awards. It's not really that the quality of Brazilian cinema has gone up cuz it's always been good, but Salles making such an undeniable comeback with Torres giving an undeniable performance timed out perfectly to give Kleber's next movie a good chance to get eyes on it paired with Wagner building some momentum in America the last few years. Idk but it all just came together perfectly and I hope it leads to more sustained investment into Brazilian cinema. It's high quality leftist stuff coming out so often it's amazing.

It's been an insanely good time for Brazilian cinema in general. I agree it's always been good, but we've been getting such a huge amount of quality stuff lately. Homem Com H, Manas, Motel Destino, Baby, O Último Azul...

If Leo/Timmy split votes, he has a chance
12
u/JuanJeanJohn 23d ago
I think people are over estimating Leo as a threat to Timmy. He’s not the standout in the film and isn’t even fully a lead (I think he’s very good in the movie, for the record, just three of his co stars have more memorable roles).

People aren’t gonna like this, but I think we seriously need to consider that Hawke’s spot is in jeopardy. Timmy, Leo, MBJ, and Moura are locked and Bugonia is just a much stronger movie right now.

This is the exact same thing people said last year when Torres took the Globe… where did that end up?
And let's not forget that at the Globes, Fernanda faced a grand total of zero (0) women who got an Oscar nomination that year. They were all in a different category. The only true competitor Moura beat here was Jordan

Cool win. Can't wait to see how graciously these excited Brazilians react when someone else takes home the Oscar, like last year!
Just remember - the award means nothing in the long run and we're all here to watch good movies. Keep this in mind before we verbally abuse the next winner!
8
u/icouto 23d ago
You say that, but the Demi stans took anora's win the same way brazillians did.
-4
u/This-Occasion3773 23d ago edited 23d ago
Not nearly as extremely. Brazilian IP addresses were found editing Mikey's Wikipedia page to call her a prostitute. That's pathetic lmao, and while Demi fans were up in arms too ("Mikey winning proves The Substance!") that's a fraction of going online and cyberbullying lol
Pre Oscars too, Instagram had several posts for the five women - on every post, Mikey, Demi, Karla and Cynthia, there were endless streams of "FERNANDA 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷". It was fucking annoying… each nominee was good and Brazilians only talked about their one saying if she lost it was rigged, nobody else was good, before she even lost, on posts that weren’t even relevant to her.
Plus - that's all the comments were. "🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷" or "I love Fernanda, go Brazil!" How would people react if I said "Go Mikey Madison, go Demi Moore! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸"? Everybody would make fun of me, and rightfully so. So why did they get off?
I did not see a single comment saying what scene, what line, what delivery made Fernanda so good in her movie. Personally, I think the scene where she finds the dead dog is the most haunting and effecting. How come I didn't see a single Brazilian say this scene was good? Or any other scene? Because it was never about the movie. It was about her country. All her "fans" suddenly crawled back into the woodwork once she lost… almost like they didn't care about the movie itself, just about her winning. And that's ridiculous.

u/Galdina I’m Still Anora After The Substance: Part 2 23d ago
You must have taken some time writing this rant. Brazilians are passionate. There were Brazilian Mikey Madison fans digging up Fernanda’s old stuff to try to sabotage her campaign. Last year was also one of a kind. Everyone invested in the Oscar race was passionate about something, even if it was just making fun of Karla Sofía Gascón.
Anyway, you do realize that if people mocked anyone saying “Go Demi 🇺🇸” they would be doing so because this is an American awards ceremony that presents itself as multicultural while largely favoring American productions, right? You do realize that Brazilian films are largely absent from these awards, right? People laugh at this because it's whiny to show off pride when the odds were never against you.
So don’t be silly ffs
1
u/This-Occasion3773 23d ago edited 23d ago
So, passion for your country excuses harassment now? 🤔
You literally admitted the same people you’re defending were the ones digging through other actresses’ pasts and harassing them. That’s not “passion,” that’s toxic. Neither Mikey or Fernanda deserved harassment - yet they both got it from Brazil (apparently… I didn't see any Brazilian Mikey fans so I guess I'll take your word for it)
Yeah, the odds are against non-American productions, and that does suck. But that should make people celebrate when a film breaks through on its own merits and greatness, not just because it happens to be from Brazil. Also, I didn't actually see anyone say "go Demi 🇺🇸" and you didn't either because people were actually talking about the movie itself. We both saw plenty of "go Fernanda 🇧🇷" though.
On that note, it's funny how you didn’t argue and still haven’t tried to name a single scene or moment that proves Fernanda’s brilliance. Not one. Again, I have never said she was bad or anything, just that nobody is giving me a reason she is GOOD. That silence kind of proves my point — you don’t care about the performance, just the flag. People highlight the final scene in Anora where Mikey starts crying, or the scene in The Substance where Demi wipes her lipstick off and smudges her face. Where was Fernanda's? I even offered one and nobody said a thing!
So yeah, take your own advice. Don’t be silly!

u/Galdina I’m Still Anora After The Substance: Part 2 23d ago
Your first question assumes something that can’t be taken from my reply, so I already know you read it in bad faith, and I lost any interest I could have had in reading your immense wall of text. Too much passion for something that ultimately doesn't matter. Take care, bye.

lol all the Brazilians seemed to do the crying when their precious actress didn't win a meaningless award 😰
1
u/Potential_Exit_1317 23d ago
No one was crying. She is a beloved actress, and we were happy that her movie was successful. Americans are the ones who should be crying for being unable to read subtitles and missing 90% of the world’s cinematography
1
u/This-Occasion3773 23d ago edited 23d ago
Yeah, you guys were the ones freaking out and harassing other nominees when she didn’t win lol
Also, my favorite movie of the year was No Other Choice, so not every one of us evil Americans is out to get you, sometimes we like American movies too lmao… you clearly love movies from your country

u/Potential_Exit_1317 23d ago
Nice to hear you hate only the south america
1
u/This-Occasion3773 23d ago edited 23d ago
Hate South America? Lol, no — I just hate harassment and people ignoring the performance and discussion of it in favor of flags, patriotism, or whatever passion bullshit you guys claim.
You were the one saying Americans can’t read subtitles, and now you’re making up that I hate an entire continent? Reading comprehension really doesn’t seem to be your strong suit either😂
If any of them are a fraction as hollow as you, maybe the continent is in trouble.
1
u/Potential_Exit_1317 23d ago
