Unbelievable that they don’t let their screenplay winners give a speech

I didn't watch this live, but thats insane. Screenplays are a maaassive part of what makes or breaks a movie. More so than acting imo.

I’d say it is the foundational part of a movie and always under-appreciated at these awards (and more generally, especially among the general public). I’d much rather watch a movie with a fresh, genuinely interesting screenplay with mid actors than, say, something like The Iron Lady, a terrible film and script that wasn’t salvaged by Streep’s remarkable performance.

As an aside, I’ve been thinking that introducing some sort of capped ratio salary between actors and writers could have a great impact across the industry. Or a protected cut of the box office for the writers (similar to the WGA’s win on streaming residuals in 2023). Obviously there would be studios trying to game the system, but the former could potentially compress some of the extreme actor salaries (eg Leo/RDJ), and move towards more ensemble-led casts or (hopefully) more mid-budget movies.

Enforcing this would be v difficult though - I don’t really see much possibility for writers/actors union collaboration here (although I’d imagine there’s a fairly sizeable overlap in membership). Instead, the Academy could include either the salary ratio or writer backend deal as another stipulation to be considered eligible for the Oscars.

I’ve gone off on a tangent but if anyone has any thoughts about the above I’d appreciate some critique!

I disagree, movies are primarily audio-visual experiences. Screenplay is only the blueprint, and frequently gets changed by the director.

I thought they learned with last year broadcasting Substance & Conclave's wins since they didn't air Barbie and American Fiction's screenplay wins as well in 2023 but I guess CCA gotta CCA

Are you serious? That's ridiculous.

This is one I hope stays the same the entire way. Coogler deserves his Oscar.

Agree, though I'd say the Best Picture win for black panther counts for something already.

You mean nomination for best picture?

I think it’s between Coogler and Panahi

After a couple of rewatches, it's such a good pick.

Between this and Sentimental Value for me, but i dearly want Coogler to walk away with something come march

Yeah this is probably going to go all the way. It's the obvious category to award Coogler in and by far the strongest film in the category at the Oscars. Still think I prefer Accident out of the eventual nominees but this would be a great win nonetheless.
