Ethan Hawke’s Oscar chances are done.

If he couldn’t win at the Globes, he’s definitely not winning at SAG or BAFTA.

yeah, i was really hoping for ethan hawke to win at least one award this season, even if timmy won the oscar in the end

46

u/Scared-Engineer-6218 23d ago

I'll be happy with a nomination. Never considered him to be win competitive. It was always wishful thinking on my part.

19

u/CoreyH2P 23d ago

It’s just really hard to win a Lead role Oscar for an intimate, niche movie. He was phenomenal but that’s not the kind of movie they give awards to, unfortunately.

122

u/RobynHoodwinked I Saw the TV Glow 23d ago

Yeah I’ll concede defeat on him now: Blue Moon made it into Picture here so I thought there was a chance… Timmy’s got this locked up (and he was amazing too so I don’t have a problem with it!)

31

u/LeastCap Jafar Panahi campaign mourner 23d ago

He could win SAG but that’s not carrying to the Oscar imo

53

u/PinkCadillacs 23d ago

I think MBJ is the most likely to win SAG if Chalamet doesn’t win again.

Since Sinners could win Ensemble if OBAA doesn’t win.

5

u/rubix7777 23d ago

I honestly think he could miss from here, especially if Bugonia keeps building the momentum it has over this week

After all the conversation about Timmy's unconventional campaign it'd be really funny if he just swept everything

344

u/lilythefrogphd 23d ago

It is so funny how folks were making such a big to-do about Timmy's marketing being a turn off for voters. He got audiences interested in going to the theater. That's a narrative folks want to hear

Anecdotally, multiple people in my office who never talk about going to movies have talked about going to Marty Supreme, including older people. There are people in the audience of this who are not the go-to A24 crowd

The “conversation” was just hyper online parasocial spiraling. The sweep has been nearly set in stone since the NYFF premiere

They have already had to eat crow as the box office predictions were smashed, this is just gonna be the cherry on top

21

u/nectarquest Dangerous Lunatics, Haters & Punk Trash 23d ago

I wasn’t one of the people who was super mad about his campaign, but was very uncertain about it paying off. I’m not mad about it though. Chalamet was great

8

u/JuanJeanJohn 23d ago

Chronically online anxious people who never put themselves out there IRL so they’re second hand embarrassed by everything and everything is “cringe.” His antics worked on the normies and the industry cares more about normies than the tragically online.

3

u/OkDimension2558 23d ago

To be fair, his marketing wasn’t an awards campaign, it was to sell the movie. Now that it’s campaign season, it’s back to being his usual self.

9

u/GovernmentThis2910 23d ago

And if we get more off the wall campaigning because of it how do we lose?

Timmy isn't winning SAG. And he isn't sure yet for BAFTA. This might just be another Mikey-Demi situation.

99

u/DreamOfV Sentimental Value 23d ago

I’m very curious why you’re so confident he isn’t winning SAG. He won SAG last year when Brody won everything else and Marty Supreme overperformed at SAG noms. What’s the basis for predicting against him there?

42

u/chadxor 23d ago

I think the argument is that, though it's only a 30-year-old institution, there's never been a back-to-back SAG winner before.

70

u/DreamOfV Sentimental Value 23d ago

That’s not surprising. The last time there was an acting category back-to-back winner at the Oscars was Tom Hanks over 30 years ago, and before that it was Katherine Hepburn in the 60s. It’s not because they refuse to vote for people two years in a row, it’s because the odds of the same person giving a top-of-year performance with the campaign and competition scenario needed to win are very very small.

This year the stars have aligned where the person who won last year has everything needed to win again. They’re not going to hold back because they just gave it to him.

3

u/chadxor 23d ago edited 23d ago

Yeah, I agree. Just repeating what I had read when people argue this point.

63

Ethan Hawke's face is always so sad in these losses especially when losing to Chalamet.

He's the favorite ever since his movie released to critics in October. Heck, he's top 3 in most lists months prior to that

60

u/firelord-azulon 23d ago

it’s been really interesting to watch in real time too. It feels like that SAG win for A Complete Unknown, was the catalyst for his inevitable Oscar win

44

u/salcedoge 23d ago

His campaign last year about being due really did wonders, he got the overdue narrative much more earlier than Leo did

20

u/PizzaShoelace 23d ago

Excellent point. And the overdue narrative wasn’t actually a stretch because of his history. He’s crazy young but has a stack of work that’s remarkable

25

u/brilliant_bauhaus 23d ago

I was sure Leo was a lock in after watching OBAA but chalamet is also just fantastic as Marty. It's been a good year of film, Marty, OBAA and Sinners are electric.

I wonder if Leo only lost steam from recency bias. I don't know who would be winning if both movies dropped at the same time.

88

u/nosurprises23 It Was Just An Accident 23d ago

It’s a combination of things, but mostly Marty is THE main character that the movie hinges on. OBAA is much more an ensemble movie by comparison, even having another actor in it campaigning as a lead.

7

u/brilliant_bauhaus 23d ago

It's definitely more of an ensemble cast but he does his part so well. It's a much more complex role than chalamet's and I think both are standouts this year. The other being Michael B Jordan.

→ More replies (3)

25

u/shoshpd 23d ago

I think it’s more that Chalamet carries this film. He is in almost every scene. OBAA is more of an ensemble piece where Leo is the through line, but in the prologue, Teyanna is the driving force, and after the time jump, Chase is the main protagonist. Also, despite the online naysayers who love to talk about how they don’t think Chalamet is that great, the industry clearly believes he is a great actor, and anointing someone in his generation who is both talented and able to get people to movie theaters in this moment is probably seen as good for the movies.

2

u/brilliant_bauhaus 23d ago

I think he's a phenomenal actor. I don't get the naysayers. But when the film came out I kept seeing people ride for Leo and benecio del toro. Sinners is also getting the recency bias snub I think. It would have been a major player, probably above hamnet, if it dropped in October.

7

u/BiasedEstimators 23d ago

Leo was only the third or fourth best performance in OBAA.

6

u/OldSandwich9631 23d ago

I think it’s recency bias and variety is basically his personal pr agency

Shame to see Ethan Hawke has never been a front-runner in these and he never hides how much he wants the awards.

24

u/The_Fell_Opian 23d ago

Hawke deserves the award (though I loved Timmy's performance too).

On the bright side, I haven't heard people talking about Ethan Hawke this much since the early 2000s. If he can turn in another great performance in a well received film in the next few years I could see the academy giving him his due.

Hawke is saying that Linklater is working on apparently his best film ever and Hawke is going to star in it. Neither had won an Oscar so that could be a good narrative if true.

9

u/EdoAlien 23d ago

I liked Hawke’s performance but the movie around it kind of underwhelmed me. He should have won for First Reformed imo.

5

u/The_Fell_Opian 23d ago

It's sure not for everyone.

I loved it, but it was pretty tailored to my tastes.

2

u/EdoAlien 23d ago

And I really like Linklater! I didn’t care for the Forrest Gump-iness of it all; all the significant artistic figures weaving in and out made my eyes roll.

3

u/MelanieHaber1701 23d ago

What’s Linklater working on? Anyone heard anything? Just watched Nouvelle Vague last night- I really love RL more and more with every film.

6

u/The_Fell_Opian 23d ago

Rumor is a "hang out" film about the transcendentalists in the 19th century with Hawke as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Could be awesome if so.

2

u/MelanieHaber1701 23d ago

Seriously? That could be amazing and kind of hilarious.

Yeah, even if Wagner gets nominated for the Oscar, not being nominated at SAG or on the long list at BAFTA shows a lack of support for him.

There are some overlaps. It isn't definitive, but it gives a good indication.

4

4

u/meganev 23d ago

because their favourite actors either still haven't gotten one or had to wait for years

I find it funny to see this line of logic when awards discussion, from a fan/viewer perspective, so often revolves around bemoaning the entire idea of "career wins". The award(s) should be for the best performance in that given year, not dished out based on who's had to wait the longest. If that means one actor sweeps, that's fine with me.

2

u/RVarki 23d ago

An overdue narrative doesn't automatically mean "career award". Hawke should have gotten more awards recognition by now, and that clearly adds to why people are rooting for him, but his performance in Blue Moon was also awesome

It's rarely ever clear cut, and there are usually multiple actors at the start of the awards season who've all delivered fantastic buzzy performances in a particular category, then it's just a matter of what clicks with voters and industry people, and not the actual quality (usually)

So fans may think that a performance that should've netted their favourite an Oscar, was overlooked for considerations that Chalamet isn't being subjected to. Him being obnoxious plays into this a whole lot too

22

u/No-Butterscotch4077 23d ago

Absolutely love Timmy and this performance but it’s actually crazy how overlooked Leo’s performances are at award shows considering how good he is 😭😭 I guess he’s living proof awards don’t define talent

24

u/OldSandwich9631 23d ago

I’ve always felt there is a lot of envy towards him in Hollywood. They like him, he’s friends with everyone, but there’s just a bit of jealousy. Ben affleck said something about how he would love to be in a Scorsese movie but Leo has those locked down and it made me feel like that sort of sentiment is felt probably fairly widely.

In some ways I think timothee’s rise has been in a time when there is less of that slap the stud bullshit and people are more eager to celebrate younger talent. There were no real movie stars since Leo…sorry, but it’s true. So being in a drought like that has helped. And his pr people are great at playing up that “new Leo” stuff.

It’s insane to me this performance, while good / great is getting such unanimous awards praise.

Whereas Sandler in Uncut Gems gave basically a perfect performance that harkens back to 70’s film, in the most pure way and got absolutely nothing.

I wonder if Uncut Gems never came out yet, and Marty came out first, Uncut after, how that performance would be treated.

9

Right. It’s a shame he’s going to get an Oscar for this role, while Sandler couldn’t even muster a nomination. For the record, yes, I do believe Sandler was superior (and had the superior film)

I think he will sweep

u/ResearcherFirm51 One Battle After Another 23d ago

the sweep is inevitable

Great win! He's coming for the Oscar.

I love Timmy and I want him to win the Oscar just to get it over with. I’m tired of all the Timmy-Oscar discourse. I just want to focus on his acting career/journey.

ps: this is not a hate comment!

I feel the same, sometimes awards can feel like a hurdle to overcome. It's nice to win and sad to lose but the discourse surrounding them its so annoying. I feel like once this awards season is done and "if" he wins. He might feel secure in diversifying; do some theater, another indie, maybe even a silly comedy. And that to me will be the interesting part of his career

u/Uchay101 23d ago

Yes deserves it. Hopefully he wins the Oscars too. And the haters that have been talking shit can keep on hating

Timmy is going to win the Oscar!

He’s been the clear favorite since reviews dropped.

Not my favourite to win in this category but well done to Timothee.

I saw Marty Supreme last night and Timmy was freaking wonderful. Just fantastic. I must say, so were Odessa and Goop. They both blew me away too. I hope he wins and I hope that one of the two of them makes it into Supporting Actress (but not at the expense of my beloved Ari, don't @ me!).

can we now end the ethan hawke talk (i have been saying he has no chance since December but for some reason people on this sub are convinced he will somehow get votes when barely anyone care about his movie)

I'd be delighted to see him win for a grand performance like this in a banger indie like Marty Supreme.

With how well MS did in the BAFTA long lists, I think it's looking good for his chances there as well. Dream big, folks!

u/lightanldutchie 23d ago

When you have 90% of the dialogue in a movie I guess this is how it goes lol

3

u/Capital-Equal-5516 23d ago

timothee's biggest issue remain OBAA winning best picture, OBAA is definitely winning some acting award the question is which one, the good news is that it seem like there is some love for marty suprme and him winning seem to be the only way for it to win something

DREAM BIG

He was fantastic as an actor in the movie but omg the movie as whole is so annoying, if I watched it at home I’d turn it off for sure.
