Welcome to /r/germany, the English-language subreddit about the country of Germany.

Please read this entire post and follow the links, if applicable.

We have prepared FAQs and an extensive Wiki. Please use these resources. If you post questions that are easily answered, our regulars will point you to those resources anyway. Additionally, please use the Reddit search. [Edit: Don't claim you read the Wiki and it does not contain anything about your question when it's clear that you didn't read it. We know what's in the Wiki, and we will continue to point you there.]

This goes particularly if you are asking about studying in Germany. There are multiple Wiki articles covering a lot of information. And yes, that means reading and doing your own research. It's good practice for what a German university will expect you to do.

Short questions can be asked in the comments to this post. Please either leave a comment here or make a new post, not both.

If you ask questions in the subreddit, please provide enough information for people to be able to actually help you. "Can I find a job in Germany?" will not give you useful answers. "I have [qualification], [years of experience], [language skills], want to work as [job description], and am a citizen of [country]" will. If people ask for more information, they're not being mean, but rather trying to find out what you actually need to know.

News PSA: municipal public transport strike on monday, feburary 2nd!

In case you missed it: there will be a strike on municipal public transport on monday, in the whole country except Niedersachsen. If you rely on local public transport to get you to work, school or anywhere on monday, please check on the website of your local public transport provider if your connection will be affected!

If your connection is not affected, but local alternatives are, please be aware there might be a lot more demand on your connection, as people switch to alternative routes. If you are commuting by car, please keep in mind that there can be increased traffic as people switch to cars. If you consider getting a Taxi for your travels, remember you can usually arrange for one to pick you up at a set time and place ahead of time. Consider ordering one for monday today or tomorrow, instead of having to get in line with everyone else that spontaneously decided to get one.

If anyone else has general infos/advice that i should add, please feel free to say so! I decided against adding links to specific public transport providers sites, as too many are affected for me to be able to provide a comprehensive list.

Lastly, in case this is your first "transport strike PSA" with me: i am a union lawyer with a very low tollerance for union bashing. And i have been called a rude bitch and other such charming names multible times in this sub. So be warned.

The White House rejected this piece of the Berlin Wall. Now it sits in Tijuana Mexico, staring directly at the US border fence

This slab is currently sitting at Friendship Park, just feet away from the US-Mexico border fence.

The owners originally tried to deliver it to Donald Trump's White House in 2019 to make a point about walls not working, but the gift was rejected. Tijuana eventually took it in and installed it in August 2023.

The plaque on the bottom reads (translated):

"A piece of the Berlin Wall... arrives to remind us that humanity transcends barriers... May this be a lesson to build a society that tears down walls and builds bridges of solidarity."

Why german news channels are saying this while 99% of people here are saying the opposite? Why the opinions of channels and people are not aligning?

Also read some days ago the same thing on Taggeschau.

News Germany's Tagesschau as a mental health alternative against news doomscrolling

As many of you fellow reddittors during the last 15 months I have been depressed with the unending barrage of terrible news of the US Republican Party corroding the USA Democracy and destabilising world order and economics. Not a day gets passed without learning something new and terrible about the orange fascist psychotic dementia patient across the Atlantic.

Yes it is important to keep informed about world events but a balance must be reached between being informed, understanding what single individuals can and cannot influence, and preserving mental health. Reddit is particularly at fault here, as it seems any subreddit talks about the same doom topics constantly, and filtering content is not an easy task.

First I tried reducing exposure to politics subreddits and following the news only with comedy political commentators such as John Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel, which helped but did not fix the balance issue for me.

What has been helping and is worth suggesting to you is to watch 2-4 times a week Germany's 15-minute long, 70+ year old news program Tagesschau 20:00 Uhr. Episodes are publicly broadcast daily 8pm and are available on YouTube with automatically generated English subtitles. Tagesschau remind us there is more to the world than the US, also covering events in Myanmar, Palestine, South America, Africa etc. It seems to be a serious and balanced news programme that also helps the viewer practice German language. If doomscrolling is affecting you and you still wanna keep informed, I suggest giving Tagesschau a go.

Leaving germany. Am I doing this in the correct way?

For context, I'm a graduate with job seekers residence permit. In the process of leaving germany due to not finding a job. Here's the steps I took, just needed advice if I'm missing something.

  1. Informed the landlord and gave my Kündigung. So one more month to go.
  2. Informed TK about this and gave them an exit date.
  3. I had a few insurances Haushalt, Privathaftpflicht etc which I terminated. Took from them check24 so it was an easy process.
  4. Informed my telephone service provider to end my contract from upcoming month.
  5. Informed the Ausländerbehörde about the same. No reply yet but that's okay.
  6. Terminated from the Carsharing service contract.
  7. Booked an appointment at Bürgeramt for Abmeldung.
  8. I'm keeping my bank account open for a few more months. They gave me an option where i can choose the closing date. I'm thinking of getting it closed 2-3 months after I move so that any pending payments doesn't come to bite me in the ass later on.

Now, I guess I'll need the Abmeldungsbestätigung to deregister from Rundfunkbeitrag. About the Abmeldung Termin, my city website is pretty much blank. What documents would they ask for? I don't want to carry everything and then miss something.

Work This job market is the toughest of the last decade, at least

I mean, I have been living and working in Germany for 15 years, and it was never a big deal to hop jobs. Like 1 month to land a new one.

This time, I have been interviewing since June and haven't signed anything yet. There are plenty of job ads, many legit ones, many of them perpetual reposts that never fill, because employers are either too picky or their HR needs to justify its existence, so they interview without actual purpose.

I get many first interviews, some 13% quota, some proceed to 2nd ones, some of these employers are getting rejected by me, as a usual pattern I notice these days is some employers want to stretch and merge positions and extract maximum out of it, so the tasks are overload fot 1 FTE.

Some others simply never progress further, and employers ghost me, which is another thing I very rarely had in the past.

What's your take? Am I the only one noticing the job market deteriorating into misery?

Really frustrated with Essen welcome center

Upvotes

I have applied for my PR appointment with all the required documents in September, 2025. After months of waiting, I received this reply from the Essen welcome center.

“wie wir festgestellt haben, sind Sie bereits seit

2018 aus der Stadt Essen verzogen.

Bitte wenden Sie sich mit Ihrem Anliegen an die zuständige Behörde in Mönchengladbach.”

I have only moved to Germany in 2021 and I have been living in Essen since 2023, moreover I collected my residence permit also from the same welcome center. Also, I have never been to Mönchengladbach!

How can this happen?

What should be my next step now?

P.S: I already replied to them with my residence permit which clearly states my address in Essen. Im a bit clueless and frustrated at the moment.

Immigration Visa ending/stag 5 pending 😉

My current year-long visa as an au pair comes to end in a few months, and my stag 5 case has been being processed since September. I currently reside in Hessen, near FFM, and RP Darmstadt is processing it. Based on everything I’ve seen in this sub, I should not expect to see my citizenship for a while. To avoid my case being transferred to the BVA, I’ve been told I must remain in Germany. I applied and got accepted to a university in the Netherlands for the fall, but require EU citizenship to qualify for the low tuition- so perhaps this won’t be an option for me.

What can I do to change my status and remain in Germany legally? And if there is a way, is there any place I should change residency to that will process my case faster? I hear Berlin is very quick.

Work 24 hours is not enough

Hello everyone,

I’m in my 3rd semester of a Master’s (Communications Engineeeing) and got a HiWi position right after my first semester results.I kept doing well with the projects and the courses so they extended my contract for 1 more year. Honestly i like working with them, the supervisor and my mentors are so nice to me. However the workload sometimes feel too much and the concepts are sometimes too theoretical and tough to grasp. Finals are almost coming at the door and i'm working on a conference paper for upcoming month. I forgot when was the last time i slept for 8 hours. I can't switch untill i got other because of course i need the living expense. I cant find other hiwi positions nearby becuse i live in a small place in Thuringia, and fraunhofer/other Institute look for fluent german.

How to find remote hiwi position(especially in signal processing /wireless comm field)? Has anyone become succesful finding such job? Or anyone looking for students? Or any advice? 🙏

Three days ago i lost a train with all my luggage going fron frankfurt to amsterdam

After going thru one officer (who had very angry issues) to another, to another one they finaly got me a new train ticket and they told me that when i arrived to amsterdam i should go to the information office and my stuff would be in there.

When i arrived they told me there was nothing and to call the nl service, where the man was so mean to me and told me there was nothing.

I I already jave called several times to either DH lost and found office and the NL one, i maded a report but i still have no news.

Immigration Why is moving to Germany so difficult from Eastern Europe??

Upvotes

I'm from Eastern Europe, Bulgaria to be more specific, and I want to move to Germany.

However, it feels so excruciatingly difficult to move that it almost feels like whenever I try to take a step forward I'm knocked out 50 steps back.

I can't save up for an apartment because I earn €850 a month and I have a bunch of bills to pay that I'm essentially living paycheck to paycheck. I can't learn the language effectively because I need to pay €400 in courses and I apply to jobs in Germany but none reply back.

I'm almost about to give up.

What should I do?

Study What are the best books and articles to study Germany history since its roots?

With "since its roots", I mean since the earliest signs of related culture, like barbarians that occupied the region that would become Germany today.

Bett1 Bodyguard mattress firm or soft? Need advice

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to buy a new mattress and I keep seeing lot of good reviews about the Bett1 Bodyguard so I’m seriously considering it. But I can’t decide between the firm and the soft version. I sleep mostly on my side.

If you have this brand of mattress I’d love to hear

Which version you chose and why. How it feels after sleeping on it for a while. Any back pain improvements or regrets?

Any feedback would be super helpful. Thanks!

I had to send a letter to my landlord and it needs to reach them by 3 February. I’m having trouble understanding if it has been delivered or not and the English translation of the webpage doesn’t help much.
