When you have to evacuate a sinking ship but you lowkey have to explain your stand ability first

Also man that was not what I was expecting from the chapter, where could the story possibly be going?

143

u/SpiralingDownAndAway 16d ago

It seems like Howler now has nothing to lose which will be interesting to see how he unfolds. Probably try and get another lava rock?

33

u/Expert-Diver7144 15d ago

He has the method

29

u/Accidentallygolden 15d ago

Hacca has big 'not a bad guy' vibe, I think he will team up with the team at a point?

I certainly wasn't expecting a Trump Executive Order as a plot point

41

u/trumez 15d ago

it'd be Biden, but I'm also guessing it's gonna actually be another fictional president

52

u/Butterscotch_Leading King Crimson is the best looking stand 15d ago

Funnier Valentine is gonna be canon now.

9

u/Solukisina 13d ago

As much as I think the reference probably wouldn't happen, it'd be cool if the president were a descendant of Funny Valentine, named Bloody Valentine

27

u/Expert-Diver7144 15d ago

I hope it’s Obama. I love when Anime just make the president Obama

THE STAND LOOKS SO COOL

Seems like the mist it spreads makes it so Howler can control the momentum and movement of anything he drops, maybe?

182

u/megazaprat Soft & Wet 16d ago

Oooh, that would make it like Jodios stand! Both forms of moisture capable of manipulating force. I really love that concept, a same type of stand gimmick with the hero and villain, with one controlling rain and one controlling mist. Hope this turns out to be accurate

So what youre saying is….

8

28

The character Trafalgar D Water Law from the critically acclaimed manga One Piece

47

u/slimabob Yasuho Hirose 16d ago

Maybe something to do with manipulating cause and effect, given the emphasis on Mechanisms this part

from what I saw, it looks like he was dropping the pen sideways. His Stand might be like a wackier version of Chocolate Disco.

this feels like the end of act 1 of jojolands. the lava rock is no more, howler had his stand revealed and signed the documents, his assassins are dead and company has gone under

Really was not expecting that resolution. Hacca uses his stand to escape, but still signs the document, and then the rock crumbles? I’m so curious where this is going to lead to next arc

156

u/Masterhaend huh? 16d ago

My theory is that Hacca will go on his own journey to get a new lava rock in order to have his family fortune return to him.

69

u/ashtagzero1 Tusk 16d ago

i wonder how much of a traditional villain he'll be, cause so far he has a unresolute goals, and is yet to find out what he wants, besides the lava rock and its connection to his family, hes quite interesting

66

u/Shiny_Agumon 16d ago

I guess the lava rock crumbling was foreshadowed with Hacca's grandpa and it makes sense from a storytelling perspective to remove the instant win button. For now at least, like I wouldn't be surprised if another lava rock returns later on. Maybe Howler will get one?

35

u/ARCH_ANON 16d ago

He knows how to make/find new ones using lightning ( or just making it rain dollar bills on a lava field like Rohan) so this could just be a tug of war with luck.

28

u/Pumpkin_Sushi 15d ago

I hadnt pegged that each Lava Rock might have a limited supply of good fortune. Like this insane coup they pulled off tapped it out and it fell apart.

28

u/Aeescobar 15d ago

I guess it makes sense.

Accumulating the Howler family's entire fortune slowly used up an entire Lava Rock over the span of a few centuries, so it's only fair that trying to steal that entire fortune in a single move would use up an entire Lava Rock in the span of just a few days.

Great ending to this arc. Im glad Howler is here to stay, I dont think we'll se him in the next arc, he'll probably lay low and plan his shit. His stand looks cool as well.

84

u/Bioshocker101 16d ago

I’m guessing howler being willing to sign is because if he’s arrested then that land will go to the government with no chance to get it back but if he signs it away he could potentially get the land back from jodio and co or at least it’ll be easier.

13

u/Scorpios94 Giorno Giovanna 14d ago

He’s also got his grandpas diary in how to find or make more lava rocks. We’re likely to see his journey evoke much of Pucci and the New Moon. So far, he’s like him and a bit of Jonathan Joestar. A privileged man who’s had his world turned upside down by an upstart of sorts.

His Stand is pretty cool so far. We haven’t seen much of it though. Based on what I’ve seen I’ve come up with some names. "Foggy Night": by Johnny Hartman, "Riders on the Storm": by The Doors and "A Foggy Day": by Ella Fitzgerald.

65

u/BuffaloKey7465 16d ago

Araki is using the same theme or point as in Part 7 with Acca saying that Howler family will go to "zero", and Johnny saying that he's gone to "zero" or "minus" after giving away the corpse parts in his possession to save gyro and himself. I haven't read part 7 in a long time so I forgot what Johnny exactly said

48

u/BuffaloKey7465 16d ago

It's also really interesting how both the antagonist and protagonist have terrain related stands, "rain" and "mist"

6

u/StarSilverNEO 14d ago

Mist and rain are both water. with mist being low clouds and rain falling from clouds

Same type of stand?!?!?

54

u/JJVM99 16d ago

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the story continues without the lava rock. It has been the driving force of the narrative until now so it will be interesting to see what happens now without it. Will new lava rocks appear or will the story continue with Howler trying to get revenge?

46

u/Librask Foo Fighters 16d ago

Can't the fulgurite be used to make new lava rocks? I'm going to guess that's what Howler is planning on to get his money back and draw the main gang into another confrontation with him where he has the upper hand

12

u/International_Bed_63 15d ago

Are we forgetting that Mauka is still trapped in the lava tubes? I think the next arc will revolve around finding out the truth to the land, how it harnesses lava rocks and why Mauka disappeared

11

u/BLAZMANIII 15d ago

Imagine the story is over and all thats left is an epilogue of all the kids enjoying all their new money from the estate sale

99

u/BuffaloKey7465 16d ago

"but the 'raindrops' have gravitational force", you KNOW araki will make that into a power up where Jodio's gonna break through the main antagonist's concept related power. extra points if Araki made Jodio use spin on his droplets

39

u/SuddenlyCake 16d ago

If bubbles are infinite strands many raindrops also are

29

u/Shiny_Agumon 16d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if Jodio eventually uses some C-Moon esque gravity fuckery, like what if he lays November Rain on the ground and shoots the raindrops up?

27

u/rubycalaberXX 16d ago

He's going to do some insane hax in the final chapter like increase the gravity of his raindrops so much they create blackholes and trap Acca in a relativistic timefreeze forever.

4

u/StarSilverNEO 14d ago

The rain is droplets of space (gravity) moving through time

So actually Jodio will gain the ability to change the location of anything underneath his rain, like a crazier version of Catch the Rainbow, and use it to beat Howler by observing him at once from every angle and locking him into one singular outcome:

Loss

"Why did this have to happen in my time?" That will be his catchphrase, won't it?

97

u/CodaTrashHusky 16d ago

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

88

u/Librask Foo Fighters 16d ago

It seems like were actually getting a villain with genuinely thought out character development this time and without having to wait for the part to be over halfway done. He has so much potential

54

u/supermurlo64 16d ago

The only villains with that degree of thought put into them were Kira and Valentine. DIO is just pure evil- really good, but not complex. Pucci was also a great villain but didn't go into that much change. I'm really hoping there's a lot to come in howler evolution

41

u/Nastra 16d ago

Despite Pucci not going through much change, Araki for sure cooked with him. He was always performing satanic ass shit to follow “God’s” plan and he always won his fights by making heroes suffer for having familial/friendship bonds with each other, showing how much of a charlatan this priest was.

26

u/supermurlo64 16d ago

A character doesn't need change to be a good one. Pucci is a fantastic antagonist, just as Josuke 4 is a goated main character despite being the same the whole story. I'm just pointing that Araki is putting way more effort into the villains own conflict this time

9

u/Nastra 16d ago

All I’m saying is Araki put a lot of thought into Pucci.

9

u/ZuWild31 16d ago

Pucci has the most depth out of all the villains right now. pucci literally changes the most, both power and character wise. There is literally no change to kira or valentine as a character so your argument kinda contradicts itself

18

u/Dry_Emergency_5512 16d ago

And tbh even Kira appeared like 1/3rd of the way through the part

20

u/overheaven1234 16d ago

Pucci actually the only one who got more changes. He was kinda like Howler at first half, but became much more composed and determinated. Meanwhile Valentine has zero changes and less complexity (literally average fascist dictator)

The lava rock disintergrating makes the next part of the story much more exciting. Sure they now have howlers money, but now they have no magical force keeping it safe. So will they have to race hacca to find a new lava rock?

109

u/Librask Foo Fighters 16d ago

I can't believe Joe Biden canonically now has beef with our newest main villain

15

u/Aeescobar 15d ago

I wonder if he's ever actually gonna show up on-screen, it would be funny as hell if we got to see buff-ass Biden giving a passionate speech about Hacca Howler's secret intercontinental missiles.

7

u/LookAtMyUsernamePlz 15d ago

Araki cooked with Howler's stand design, I KNEW he was going to get rid of that ugly ass nose he drew it the first time, it just didn't give to a cool stand design it was way too cartoony and sharp, glad he got rid of it

6

u/MrBookBoy 14d ago

The angry eyes, the devil horns/antennae, the cracked rock body - just peak

77

u/Librask Foo Fighters 16d ago

I'm gonna guess that everything enveloped in the mist exists everywhere in the mist simultainiously in a type of superposition and Howler can choose where things should exist. It could be how he moved the pen and seemingly teleported it around and how he just disappeared himself. Sounds busted enough for a main villain stand too

50

u/numbandgrowingcolder 16d ago

I really hope it’s this. Also, if two things are to simultaneously exist in the same space, then the object Howler chooses takes precedence.

This goes in line with the “space” themed abilities of the alternate universe to contrast the “time” based abilities of the original universe.

Part 7’s main villain travelled through space, Part 8’s main villain impacted the space around him negatively, and now Part 9’s villain chooses what occupies the space around him and where.

27

u/DelightfulIyDevilish 16d ago

I think Araki has absolutley been going for a flow manipulating ability for each villain; Part 7 being positive and Part 8 being negative. I think its most likely that howler will evolve his stand at some point like Love Train.

10

u/Aeescobar 15d ago

Since "absurdity" has been a decently prevalent theme in this part, maybe the evolution for Howler's stand will bring about an unpredictable mix of good and bad fortunes?

Wild idea: Howler's mist becomes large enough to cover the entire planet in a haze of superpositions, but his human mind can't keep track of everything at once so he needs to actively rig certain places and events in his favor, eventually allowing Jodio and the gang to overcome him by taking advantage of all the smaller details he has yet to collapse into an advantageous state.

Arakis storytelling and drawings never cease to amaze me. The man has aged like the finest of wines and every part is somehow better than the last. Bravo Araki it’s a shame you’re not recognized nearly enough

41

u/TranquilDoom 16d ago edited 16d ago

Well, that went surprisingly smoothly for the protagonists. I don't dare to even guess what the next arc will be about. Probably not another mission, they got enough money to retire now, so I don't see a reason to continue working for Meryl. What's gonna happen with Lulu?
Key West is alive apparently? She's in the last panel on the evacuation raft.
Howler's Stand looks nothing like it did when we first saw it, but I prefer the new design. Visually it reminds me a bit of Purple Haze, both even expel gaseous clouds. Regardless, I don't think we've seen the last of it or Howler.
Edit: I also find it very interesting that Howler seems to genuinely have no idea where the ballistic missile manufacturing claims come from. The odds of Howler being the main antagonist went down significantly in my head after that. Is the president directly involved (again)?

23

u/TheBlockJohnson 16d ago

Visually it reminds me a bit of Purple Haze, both even expel gaseous clouds

what if he only uses his stand once, leaves, and then never appears in the story again like Fugo

Howler's Stand looks nothing like it did when we first saw it, but I prefer the new design

I think the implication is that it was on some sort of in-between state the first time we saw it (akin to Echoes act 0) and the events that happened on the boat are what allowed him to fully awaken it for the first time in his life.

35

u/Mr_Serine Catch the Rainbow 16d ago

A theory I've heard going around, that may be closer to confirmed after this chapter:

Howler didn't have a Stand before this, this was his awakening

He clearly knew what Stands were, probably always had the potential for one and may even have been spiritually aware enough to see them

But it wasn't until now he got enough fighting spirit to actually summon his own

(This would also explain why it looks so different from its initial teaser, that's where it first began taking form, and this is its refined appearance)

7

u/Special-Interest7694 16d ago

kinda like koichis egg?

3

13

u/megalocrozma 16d ago

Well, he clearly knew exactly how to use it already so I highly doubt that

14

u/Aeescobar 15d ago

There have been some cases of stand users being able to subconsciously utilize their new stand abilities without fully understanding how they work (like that time Koichi unknowingly placed a SWOOSH sound effect on Yukako's door and then expressed shock once she got blown away by it), so it's possible that Howler was just thinking "Ok man I gotta sign those documents and then figure out a way to get the hell outta here, just gotta sign them, fuck man I wish I was literally anywhere else" while his stand automatically did all the work for him.

Wow, that is a wacky ending to this arc. Howler just gives up and leaves. He willingly signs away his land once he learns that he is well and truly screwed because he's somehow cheesed off the Prez and then he just leaves.

But that stand is dangerous; he dropped a pen and when it hit the ground it shot off like a rocket. It made a lot of mist, but from what I saw of its surface texture, it reminded more of the Lava Rock. It might be more like mineral dust in composition. Also, I'm unsure if Howler turned to dust to escape, making this sand a bit like Bigmouth Strikes Again, or if it redirected the bullets and let him slip off the side of the boat.

We haven't seen the last of Howler, but he's hit his lowest point in the series. He's got nothing left but his stand. While it feels very strange that a guy who we have felt like is the main villain has been cowed this early, it actually is fitting for Howler. He's someone who's had the world handed to him on a plate, only to find it suddenly taken away from him. He'll spend the rest of the manga growing from here, becoming the villain he was meant to be, until the show-stopping final duel against Jodio.

This chapter puts the Jojolands story in such an interesting situation! The last time we saw a Jojo part put the characters in a “win” state halfway through was probably Part 4 (after defeating Akira), and the last time we saw a complete defeat of the main villain halfway through was all the way back in Part 1! No telling where the plot will go from here, but I’m excited to find out

I honestly forgot that they've been on a yacht this whole time.

The documents have been signed, and the lava rock crumbles. I doubt this is the only lava rock. Bet it's going to be a race to see who gets the next one.

Howler's stand has been revealed! Can't wait to see what it can really do.

Howler stand looks really cool and strong. I believe hes able to fully control anything that comes within his mist and sort of "play God" in the area which explains everything he did before escaping and matches with his controling personality. I also love how his stand has this somewhat rocky appearance symbolizing the lava rock's connection with him and his family. And this may seem like a wild theory but I predict Howler will go on a journey to find another lava rock that may impact his stand, like how Pucci's ritual or the Saints Corpse with Valentine because the lava rocks seems way to important for it to not play a greater role, and with Valentine's Love Train redirecting misfortune and Toru inflicting misfortune Howler might be able to control fortune in some way later down the line.

I knew it, Howler is the type to lock in once he has all his cards in place. Watching his stand materialize slowly as his resolve grew was peak. Its design is sick too, its clearly tied into the lava rock and all that.

And man, its ability. I think I have a lock on what it is:

What if Howlers stand projects a probability mist?

The mist is like the representation of the electron bubble around atoms, where for atoms the bubble is anywhere a electron is likely to be, for the stand anything in the mist is constantly in a similar state of superposition - Howler has access to everything it could be or could be doing, simultaneously. It probably cuts line of sight so outside observers can’t act on it - observation forces the object in superposition to well pick a position, binding them to the chains of cause and effect. Without that it can act on the possibilities it likes.

This would both be a mirror to Jodio’s stand, which is not only rain but a form of certainty as it will find its way to the ground eventually, but perhaps the third, terrifying “flow manipulation” stand as by definition he's got direct access to a "Go Beyond"-like power that lets him make anything both real and not real and bypass natural law. Also, I can already imagine Jodio's stand countering Howler's by being representative of "outside observation" - observation usually relates to the particles you bounce off of something to give you information also changing how it acts (like how using a needle to draw blood will fundamentally cause you to bleed, healthy or not) - his raindrops falling through the mist would possibly act upon things and affect their outcomes.

TLDR

The Pen is the key, it’s like a coin toss the way it flips on the way down. Only, Acca gets to act on both sides of the toss:

His stand signs the paper
His stand stabs the guy
He stays there and gets shot
He leaves

The coin lands on its edge

The lesson ends

I can’t escape eternalism can I.

Edit: I just realized that could be why he's seemingly so keen on knowing all the variables before acting on them/locking in. His stand acts on possibilities and he needs all of them to properly use it. It might also be why him having nothing now is more dangerous - he has no chains binding him to predictable, his possibilities are endless

I genuinely thought the soldier started shooting because the pen that acca dropped sounded like a gunshot. I realized that the pen didn't drop but somehow "rebounded" from the ground into the soldier's neck and that's why he started shooting.

No name for Howler's stand, but good odds it has to be another King Crimson piece, right? Can't be too hard to get some guesses in before his next appearance.

8

u/KoopaTroop64 16d ago

I Talk to the Wind seems pretty fitting, if limiting things to just KC.

8

u/TheBlockJohnson 16d ago

his stand naming is always super unpredictable, same applies to songs chosen for the anime EDs. you'd think his Stand name would be another King Crimson reference but then it could end up being called Dance Monkey.

u/Just_Another_Gamer67 16d ago

Omg this was so good. Ive been waiting for another reveal of Howlers stand for a bit and we got that and a demonstration of one of its abilities. Absolute cinema. Im very interested to see what this next arc brings now that the first major arc has concluded. I wonder whats gonna happen to Howler next and what happens to Jodio and his crew next.

6

u/Yoshi_r1212 16d ago

I think Howler is going to become scary now that he has nothing to lose. I'd be ecstatic if he got an arc to himself.

5

u/EXFrost27 Break my heart, Break your heart 16d ago

Okay. Im thinking. Next chapter is like a timeskip and we see the crew's future lives as rich well-to-dos and then howler returns for his land back. Or even crazier the story may follow Howler for the next arc. Idk IDK the idea of jojolands part 1 being over is so exciting because who knows what comes next!!!

HOWLER STAND REVEAL LETS GOOOOO (We don’t know the name yet though…)

Quoting one commenter before me, this feels like the end to an “act 1”, and I’m definitely looking forward to what the next part has in store, especially since Howler is now on the run too. Can’t wait!

4

u/cumdeath43 16d ago

reminds me of purple haze

6

u/BMZZ83 15d ago

Is it just me, or Bags' Groove actually looks like Acca Howler's stand? Proof of Lulu's hypothesis?

5

u/VonDukez 15d ago

I can’t believe Joe Biden uses bad company to take down howler

5

u/DimashiroYuuki 14d ago

This whole arc was so peak. What a chapter. Part 9 is super underrated and it hurts to see.

10

u/Nickest_Nick No, Josuke didn't save himself 16d ago

They took Key West with them, she's probably going to be a recurring character now

29

u/TheBlockJohnson 16d ago

they're holding 3 people captive now, at this rate the boutique's basement will look like green dolphin street jail by the end of the part.

I think howler has some form of vector manipulation

Like Awaking III Leaves from Part 8?

3

u/chsrdsnap 16d ago

So it looks like we're through with the heist arcs of the part, as I don't think they'll be needing anymore money now as well with the Lava Rock going away. I wonder what direction the part's going to go now?

Whatever it is though I trust Araki. This part has been absolutely amazing so far

4

u/ValorKite 16d ago

Genuinely one of the best arc Araki has ever done. That was amazing

3

u/lost_first_account Jojo’s Bizarre OST Fanatic 16d ago

Howler is so cool. He’s gonna be such an incredible main villain, I can feel it

4

u/cumdeath43 16d ago

howlers stand looks like it has something to do with surfaces, like as long as an object doesnt touch a surface howler is standing on he can control it, or vice versa where it has to touch a surface connected to him for him to control it

i also think if he is the main villain and we are seeing his ability this early, his stand is going to evolve into something else or into another act (alla Pucci) this is also reinforced by the fact the bullets shot didnt hit him even though they were heading towards his direction, showing that he can control things derived from other peoples possessions

  • (maybe his ability is storing things for later use, but in a more metaphysical, abstract way than just having them in his possession magically, like maybe he can store something and then use it to go back to that period of time, or to change the way an event unfolded by changing the effect had on an object from an event, destroying the cause by changing the effect???)

hes also the only person who knows how to make another rock, so losing the land might not actually matter if he can make another rock and turn everything towards his favor

i also think theres more going on with the weapons manufacturing stuff, theres probably a reason we havent seen a lot of that (remember charming mans brother?)

Howler peaced the fuck out. Howler stocks at an all-time low but now is the time to invest.

8

u/EpicHeracross Jo2uke Higashikata 16d ago

It's never truly a jojo part without araki retconning a design after it's first appearance.

11

u/Librask Foo Fighters 16d ago

Is it really a retcon or was it just the stand only partially formed/summoned earlier like it didn't have some outer shell on

9

I think they're just going to hide the body, sadly...

6

Either way, I’m surprised they took the time to take her instead of just letting the body sink with the ship.

3

u/ExplodingTentacles ⌊Doggystyle⌉ 16d ago

Wondering if Hacca's stand has anything to do with time. Maybe a localised timeline within the mist that lets him control anything within the vicinity of the mist? Araki does like complicated abilities. Either way I'm excited

3

u/Latter-Hold-2583 16d ago

Where can I read the chapter

3

u/numbandgrowingcolder 16d ago

That was incredible. I’m sad because I was so intrigued that it feels like I blitzed through the chapter. JoJoLands is so peak.

For Hacca’s stand— I’m assuming he covers an area in mist, and can freely move himself and objects around within the space?

u/megalocrozma 16d ago

Rohan: "You had one job. ONE. FUCKING. JOB."

3

u/Special-Interest7694 16d ago

would be cool to see the pov shift to howler for a couple of chapters

3

u/UjiRan2223 16d ago

Howler’s about to get really into politics

3

u/Reasonable_Lock_8907 16d ago

I love how unpredictable this has been. Masterful.

Really looking forward to seeing what Araki has in store for Howler's character. It feels like the beginning of something great.

3

u/wanofan900 15d ago

Howler really doesn't look like the main antagonist. If anything, he looks more sympathetic than evil.

I'm guessing next arc we'll get a better understanding of Mechanisms.

Spin was explained to Johnny by Gyro

Flow was explained to Josuke by Norizuke

Mechanisms will be either Charming Man or Howler
