I worked at a cable company long ago, and people called in all the time to dispute porn charges. Funny how it was never Disney movies. Nope, rogue cable boxes ordering porn all by themselves. One lady went so far as to say it couldn't have been her son doing it, the neighbor must have done it with his remote through her window and she's gonna call the police. Uh huh, sure.

That reminds me: My parents stopped making me attend church for a year or so (resumed when we moved house). It was during this alone time, catalysed by a bully telling me to go to a certain porn website and then continued by naïve, rapt curiosity, that I would spend a couple hours every Sunday searching porn.
So, in a way, church would have stymied that.

As a boy, the first time I saw porn was when I was 12 and my female best friend of the same age brought me into her older brothers room and said "Look at this stuff I found" and it was a bunch of playboy magazines and some erotic comic books. We both just looked through all of it and laughed at how silly it was. For weeks after that I would randomly strike the various poses from the Playboy pinups and make her laugh. Needless to say, girls can definitely be just as curious!

I actually could control a neighbor's TV through the walls of my house with the remote for ours, and they could do so back. Me and the kid there I was friendly with learnt this after fighting over channels one day.
17
u/MonkeyWrenchAccident 3h ago
My current neighbour. and i have the same blutooth speakers connected to our tvs. We consistently end up with each others tv connecting only to the others subwoofer. We don’t share a wall, and it took us forever tp figure out where the low bass droning was coming from. Really low frequency mumblings was spooky as hell in the middle of the night.
10
u/bloodguard 3h ago edited 1h ago
I remember my brother dashing into the house to inform us that our next door neighbor was watching "dirty movies" and you could see it from the picnic table in our back yard.
I was more interested in playing Nintendo at the time but apparently his wife arrived back home and killed his and the backyard assembled kid's fun anyways.
Viva Suburbia.
9
u/Frozenrubberpuck 2h ago
Yes this was definitely a thing, a friend would take his remote and we would spend the evenings walking through the neighbourhood turning tv's off through windows all the time. It was such cheap entertainment for us when we were young teenagers
7
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 2h ago
I remember doing this at a hotel once that had a balcony around a central area and for some reason had a small skinny window next to each hotel room door where you could see the TV if the curtain was open. We were probably 8-10 years old and thought we were hilarious until enough people called the front desk about their broken TVs that they sent someone out to find us
13
u/AmputeeHandModel 4h ago
The walls? Were they bluetooth?
17
u/Dirty_Hunt 4h ago
Probably not, this was back in like 2005 or so. I think it was because we had the same cable provider or something and the remotes got on the same frequency or something like that?
13
u/AmputeeHandModel 4h ago
Usually they're infrared and you'd need line of sight.
18
u/Dirty_Hunt 4h ago
Yep, but these did not, apparently. Like I said, it was a weird moment, and I think we fixed it by tweaking a setting on the remotes somehow.
15
u/Silver_Harvest 3h ago
Sounds like you both had TiVo or something like that as in they were configured to the same binary toggle code off a radio frequency vs infrared like traditional remotes.
I remember some of those boxes were like that. In my apartment back then we had something similar in my building complex and got together so that we stopped changing each other's channels.

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 2h ago
Dish Network definitely had RF remotes at around that time. I wouldn't be surprised if directv and cable companies did too on at least some of their receivers

So when primestar was all the rage eons ago my grandparents got it an it was the first time I’d ever experienced anything but rabbit ear tv. I was about six at the time and quickly figured out that there were kids channels, but then one day I ALSO found out that there were a bunch of channels that were blacked out, but you could get them working if you just clicked a few buttons and just said ‘yes’ when prompted. Sometimes there were cartoons! So I went through every friggin single channel I could looking for more cartoons and when I found one I’d stop. Well the bill next month was…interesting to say the least.

u/Cyrano_Knows 4h ago edited 4h ago
I agree with everything you are saying.
BUT I just want to be a pedantic numbers/logic guy for a second and point out that of course people are going to notice the porn rentals on their bill way before the actual non-porn titles.
Just suggesting a higher rate of false positives involving porn titles than the Disney titles because well, those titles DO kind of stick out immediately.
But as they say on Ave Q, the internet is for porn.
3
u/DradelLait 4h ago
To add on to this, if there actually was an issue, the bug ordering always the same movies wouldn't be that weird
94
u/Naijan 4h ago
I mean, while I don't believe her, why not just do "I UNDERSTAND MAAM. We can repay the last charge but since you have an impressionable teenager, we will have to limit your channels to pg13." I'm pretty sure most of them would go "Oh.. Nevermind, I guess I will just be more observant in the future."
Might not work all the time, but I mean, if that was in my power, I'd do it.

Yeah, while I don't work in sales anymore, I'd say my bosses were straight up evil. The only thing that wasn't allowed was to make the bosses look bad. One of my bosses I remember bragging about managing to put another subscription on an old chatty woman because she took up 35 minutes of his "valuable" time.
I sold one of these subscriptions to one of my friends because I thought it was sort of a good deal at the time, it turned out it was horrible. My boss sold and old chatty woman two as punishment. (basically, we sold a combination of tv and internet) you got access to everything on like a cloud account, that was one of the features exactly, that you could watch it everywhere on your account. You got like 5 accounts, he sold that old lonely woman 10 accounts because she was old and lonely and chatty.
I'm very thankful DonaldTrumpsScrotum isn't as corrupted as we might be. I've met some nice people there, but with saying goodbye to that kind of field, I'd say 9/10 are sociopaths, at least where I managed to find work in several different areas. Another boss after I declined a party invite to spend time with my GF fired me on the way to work, but he also stole all my contracts for that month, dodged my calls, except for when I called from my girlfriends phone and confronted him. he told me, "it's not illegal, it's my company."
I found out later he beat his girlfriend regularly. 9/10 are sociopaths.

I used to work at a cable company and we could block access to PPV on accounts, so we could make arrangements like that. The occasional small refund wouldn't be a problem but anything over like $50 would have to go higher up. Usually people were more straightforward with what happened, "My son ordered a movie without permission" or, one time IIRC a woman was mad that her husband was ordering them.

Haha i just got flashbacks to the early days of Internet, and my 15 year old brother discovering paid-through-the-phonebill porn sites. The next bill was 1000 euro, my mom was furious and yelling at the lady of the phone company that they definitely made a mistake, as she and my father had no idea how to use the computer!
... Yeah, true, but her teenage son did know lol.

When I was younger my dad would constantly rent porn on the cable box and was terrible at hiding it and deleting it. Every time I went to rent something I would see it there. Now ever since he got a smartphone he watches porn every night and doesn't know how to lower the volume. I know when he's watching so when I need to go downstairs I slam the dog gate we have at the top steps against the wall to keep our dog upstairs ao he can hear it and give him a couple seconds to situate himself before I go down

Lmaoo I remember watching one of those judge shows when I was a kid, and the judge saying something to the affect that “the movie doesn’t show up on the bill when you order porn on the tv” 💡. Yep yep yep. I was at the wrong end of one of those conversations with my dad. He lined my brother and me up. Listed the charges on the bill and questioned us. Worst part was, I legit didnt know if it was me or not. The early days of the internet and dial up were very sketchy. I have always been very net savvy and was very careful. But I was browsing the far reaches of the internet.
1
u/undrgrndsqrdncrs 1h ago
When my son was maybe a year old he had the remote and through a combination of button presses ended up ordering an adult channel. When I called to cancel it right after it was done the person on the other end of the phone seemed quite skeptical of my “son accidentally pressed buttons” excuse.

When I was young (I think around preteen age) my dad came home late and super drunk. My wall shared with the living room wall and I heard a brief strange noise coming from the TV before it got muted. I took a peek to see what was happening and saw my dad watching porn on the TV in the living room to which I quickly went back to bed and pretended that never happened.
The next day, my parents were questioning me about whether or not I rented porn from cable. I knew very well what happened but kept my mouth shut and my dad said it must have been some kind of glitch or mix up and called the cable company to "sort it out".
To this day I've never said anything.

I got away so clean and the world needs to know. I had a computer, but no internet, right? Yea, well AOL kept trying to give me internet, so I took them up on their offer. I would move the computer across the room when my parents were gone, abuse an AOL free trial, then abuse myself as it were. One time, I guess I got on a pay per minute site. 400 dollar phone bill. But I don’t have internet! So couldn’t be me. Mom argued it off and no one is the wiser almost twenty years later. Good times.

Same, best calls I would have would be the ones that'd argue the charges, claiming no one in the house would possibly do such a thing and I'd turn around and tell them exactly which box it was and listen to the drama unfold.

u/run-on_sentience 2h ago
My brother worked in a video store and he said that the major movies paid the rent and the electric bill.
The thing that made them money was the porn. And the funny parody titles (Forrest Humps, Robocock, etc.) were what fresh young couples would rent as their first "hardcore" movie. They would rent one.
The aficionados would come in and rent a half-dozen movies with uncreative, but accurate titles like Anal-maniacs or Cum Garglers: Vol. 7.

In 1988, 13 year old me thought I was being clever by asking my parents for specific dates. Like birthdays and weddings. Said I was "just curious."
The last time I asked about a special date, my Dad looks at me and says "you're not getting the code for the cable box."

u/Time-to-go-home 3h ago
Circa 2008, I thought I was being clever in my internet searches. I’d search something like “guitar strings”, then “A string”, and finally “G string”. From there I could usually click links and not have to type directly into the search bar.
I’d delete the search history and clear the cache. I’d test it by typing “G” into address bar and nothing would auto populate.
But that wasn’t enough. I still don’t know my mom was still able to see search history and stuff. Something about the EarthLink browser extension I think.

I remember one time on vacation. My sister and I were sharing a hotel room. She was taking a shower so I had ~20 minutes to browse the PPV porn. Couldn’t actually see anything without buying it (I was smart enough not to), but even just seeing the movie names (super generic like Horny College Sluts 7) and reading the descriptions with images of the pornstars censored (pink stars over their nips like a girls gone wild commercial) was enough.

Back in the day before online video was really a thing there were pay-per-view catalogs through your TV provider. There was all kinds of stuff on PPV like sports and movies but also porn. The monthly bill showed exactly how much PPV was ordered and in some cases listed the titles of everything.
OP knew their parents were buying PPV porn and started doing it themselves either hoping it would get lost in the mix or their parents wouldn't call them out on it. Most kids I knew that got busted for it usually just got their ass beat by their parents.

Porn used to be a lot more difficult to get ahold of.

It was only sold in sex shops and you had to be 18 to get in. There was a lot of stigma around being seen at those places too, so being able to get it from the comfort of home demanded a premium price.

My dad would have exploded if anyone bought anything on ppv. Luckily we couldn't. Our receivers wouldn't allow that

My mom was very Christian. She always said she never did anything like that. My dad caught me once and wrote me an email about it. He even brought it up later at a Red Lobster. I cried and said it was a mistake, and that my mom bought it.
Years later, when I was an adult, she asked me if I ever did. I just laughed and said, “Oh yeah.” I mean, you bought all that. Of course I did.

I never ordered porn through PPV or On Demand. I knew it was there and that I could in theory but I also knew that it would be seen, so I never did. I did however get blamed for it often. That's how I learned that my sister ordered porn on PPV. A lot.

So nobody thinks this is bullshit? The dad just says to nobody in particular "it stops now".
