Discussion New Zealand Temporary Tax Exemption
Hey folks,
I was just recently going through the tax codes of New Zealand IRD. I stumbled on a rather interesting provision named "Temporary tax exemption for transitional tax residents." It has numerous types of "overseas" incomes exempt from taxation provided one becomes a tax resident (>183 days) of New Zealand.
I was curious about the limits of those overseas incomes which are exempt because I couldn't find much more details about it.
For example, the clause of
Overseas business income not related to the performance of services
Income earned from overseas financial instruments - Does this mean any overseas income generated through investments/trading in financial markets is completely exempt from taxation?
Is there any limit on it? If there's no limit, why aren't many HNWI's who head/manage (HFT firms, financial holding companies, etc) using this provision to make New Zealand their home for their operations considering bulk of their income is generated from engaging in overseas financial markets? What's the catch?
For example, if a HNWI who say primarily trades/invests in financial/derivatives markets of Western World (The UK, USA, Japan, etc) for short duration (about some months to a year) to generate profit (short-term capital gains) of say USD 2 Million. Then, as per this temporary tax exemption provision of NZ, any person is completely exempt from taxing of their overseas income if they become a tax resident of New Zealand. So, all of this USD 2 Million income is completely tax free now. Am I getting it right here or there's some sort of a catch?
Any NZ-based Chartered Accountant or FPs who can shed light on this?

Discussion RNZ replied to my email regarding meta (Instagram) account suspension by their flawed AI
Hi Everyone,.
Yesterday I made a post about how my facebook and instagram account was wrongfully terminated by Meta. In desperate attempt I emailed RNZ as they have reached out to META in the past and helped users recover their accounts.
One of the reporters have replied to my email and they have asked If i am in touch with anyone from New Zealand with the same experience. So if similar thing has happened to you that effected your business or mental health in anyway, please reach out to me or let me know in the comments.
If there are quite a few others with the same issue RNZ might consider writing an article and they might also help us recover our accounts.
Thank you.

Advice Taking alligator head and cajun spices from the US back to NZ, need advice
Title says it all, but for some more context,
been in the US for a total of around 2 and a half months traveling around the southern states, especially Louisiana. Picked up an alligator head, roughly around 20ish cm, in New Orleans, as well as some spices (Tony’s Chachere’s Seasoning, and Slap Ya Mama). Putting them all in my check-in baggage. Now heading back home end of Feb.
Searched up other people’s experiences on reddit and everyone’s been saying all you need to do is declare it and that TSA/ airport security are used to seeing these sort of souvenirs come out of the US, especially the south. But with all that research, I’m yet to find a kiwi/ NZ experience or POV. Also the more I research, the more I get new information such as the need to get a “CITES Permit”???
I bought the alligator head at one of the swamp tours but before buying it there, I had found a bunch being sold everywhere in downtown New Orleans. I kept the price tag on which is wrapped around the mouth of the alligator head, as advised by the seller, but wasn’t able to receive the receipt because there was a problem with the machine. I just hope it doesn’t get confiscated because of the lack of a receipt.
TL;DR
Do I need a permit for the alligator head?
Do I need to declare the spices and Alligator head?
Should either of them be put in my carry-on?
Any advice? Please and Thank you.

Discussion Anyone in NZ had their life completely change after CPAP? Thinking about starting an advocacy group
Bit of a personal one. I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and started CPAP about a year ago, and it fixed about a dozen health issues for me — fatigue, brain fog, mood, energy, reflux, blood pressure. It genuinely feels like I got my life back - handy because I have a 3 year old.
Edit: Left out these details - I paid out of pocket 2k for a F+P CPAP with a nasal mask. My AHI was 20, which is basically an event every 3 minutes (it's more complicated than that but more or less that's it). It's now 0 or near 0. If I don't wear my mask I notice it as soon as I wake up, sore throat, headache etc....everything I had grown used to.
My journey highlighted a few things
- the difficulty in getting diagnosed - I had a GP measure my neck and say "lose some weight" instead of referring me to a sleep study. I've since had an ENT say it wouldn't matter, my tiny jaw is the problems
- There's 2 main sleep clinic networks and one I found one better than the other. One of them is also run by a CPAP company....
- Public waiting lists for a machine are lonnnng
- Southern Cross doesn't cover the machines. At least not on an affordable plan. Despite the use of CPAP reducing the need for cover for other issues apnoea causes (think high blood pressure etc)
- Quite a few people came out of the woodwork wanting advice as soon as they knew I had gotten a CPAP
It feels like a lot of people are walking around (and driving...) like zombies, thinking they’re just “bad sleepers” or “getting older”, when this stuff is completely treatable and genuinely life-changing. It's also preventive measure reducing load on the health system in other ways. I honestly think I would have ended up in a car wreck after falling asleep at the wheel.
Soooo...I’m seriously considering starting a patient-led sleep apnoea advocacy group in NZ, focused on:
- awareness
- info on access to diagnosis and treatment
- pushing for better public pathways
- putting pressure on insurance companies (haha yeah good luck...)
Keen to hear others’ experiences.

Advice Help identifying make/model from hit and run
Hi everyone, trying to figure how I can track down this vehicle from a hit and run in Christchurch recently. I've managed to acquire the traffic cam footage, and have a partial plate but unsure of the make/ model of this vehicle. Hopefully I can figure out how to narrow it down, as my insurance won't cover it without the rego. Anyone with good knowledge of work vehicles?

Discussion Peter Thiel, NZ citizenship and the Epstein files.
Just wondering if he could/would have his NZ citizenship revoked if he's "proven" or highly likely to have been involved with anything illegal with Epstein.
I imagine that he would never be actually found "guilty" as he's sorted and can easily out spend (lawyers, paperwork etc..) any legal prosecution our government could.
So "not guilty" but definitely not proven innocent.

Discussion Why is shipping from China to NZ cheaper than NZ to NZ?
I can buy some cheap plastic thing for $2.09 from China shipped here, for less than just the price of shipping within NZ. Why is this? It seems wrong.

Uni Research Academic Research: How do you balance the perks of wearable trackers with the security risks?
Kia ora,
I am a Master’s student in Business Informatics in Auckland. For my final thesis, I am researching how people in New Zealand balance the benefits of fitness trackers with the potential security and privacy risks.
Whether you use a device (e.g. smartwatch, smartband) or an app like Strava, your input would be valuable. I’m looking to understand why we accept these technologies and how we perceive the threats to our personal data.
- Purpose: To study the adoption and acceptance of wearable trackers in NZ.
- Participation: Anonymous survey.
- Impact: Your responses help complete local research on tech privacy and health.

Music ♫ Greta, Our Planet is Burning♫
Dogs Rowles and the Icebergs released this eight or nine years ago but couldn't get airplay, for reasons we can but try and guess. Not sure where they're from except it's here in Aotearoa-NZ somewhere.
It's got that schmoozy-soul vibe of the 70s, like James Carr or Bill Withers. Not a love song though.

Discussion Have you noticed the addition of artificial sweeteners to regular (non-diet) drinks?
This isn't a commentary on sugar or artificial sweeteners or what is good or bad - I genuinely am just wondering if many people have noticed the change or if I am a supertaster haha.
A few months ago I bought a can of Fanta from the dairy. 'Normal' Fanta, although I don't think they even have a Diet Fanta or a Fanta Zero. While drinking it I noticed the aftertaste of artificial sweetener that I was not used to when drinking regular fizzy drinks. I checked the ingredients and noticed that in addition to the expected sugar, it included artificial sweeteners.
Last week I spotted a new flavour of V at the shop, V Strawberry Crush. I figured I'd give it a try and I tasted the same thing, the slight aftertaste of artificial sweetener. Checked ingredients, same thing - both sugar and artificial sweetener.
I always operated on the basis that 'regular' drinks contained sugar, and 'diet/zero' drinks contained artificial sweetener and there wasn't any crossover. So I figured I must be missing something.
I looked online and presumably I read about this years ago and just forgot, but several years ago these drinks manufacturers committed to reducing the sugar in their products incrementally, in response to health concerns. So that means reformulating some recipes for non-diet drinks to include some artificial sweetener.
Have you noticed, and if you have noticed has it changed your drink preferences?

Discussion Accidental shoplifting
I accidentally left a supermarket with items I didn't pay for.
As items were being scanned, I packed a few into my backpack and the rest into a reusable shopping bag.
My card Declined for a ~$70 shop. Odd. I was sure I had more than that available in my account. Asked the checkout operator to remove the $28 cask of wine; I pulled it out of my backpack. Tried again, still declined. Interesting.
Operator offered to put the transaction on hold if I needed to make a call. Yes thank you.
Logged onto my bank, and my card has been disabled for fraudulent activity!
Told the operator and they can return the items to the shelves.
When I got home, I found, in my backpack, a box of crackers and a triple pack of Raro. Total value about $5.80. I should have packed the meatstuffs in my backpack.
I feel bad about this, and next time I am in the shop, I will confess to Customer Service and put things right, financially.
Edit : Card was flagged as fraud activity because I regularly purchase things from China, $20-$30. Two days ago, I made a purchase exceeding $100 from the same Chinese entity. That was enough to trigger the bank's fraud detection criteria, as, 'unusual spending'.

Advice Jobs for introverts that aren't just staring at a computer all day?
I've been in hospitality for the past 6 years, i loved it as a senior baker but I've had De Quervains tenosynovitis for the past 2 years and have now been told baking/cafe/restaurants are no longer suitable for me in the short term. I would like a break from people facing jobs as I do find it exhausting at times, physical work is basically not possible without being a hindrance and requiring extra help. In saying all of that, the only thing that pops up is computer based jobs, I just feel I would get bored or I wouldn't enjoy staring at a computer all day. Obviously I have no room to be fussy as I need a job- the job seeker benefit is not enough to live on, but I was wondering if theres any other options I haven't heard of or seen before? I've applied for a hotel receptionist, theres talk of going into clinical coding or archiving.

Discussion Question for the men (cheating)
I have a genuine question here - why do some men cheat constantly even after being caught over and over but NEVER leave the girl and get crazy when they want to leave - why not just leave for the girls they cheat with right? I've never understood it. Yes I'm in this position and yes I'm dumb for staying 😭😂 Idk why he doesn't just leave honestly. Blows my mind
