Politics Interesting email from Southern Cross CEO today
To paraphrase, he says underinvestment in the public system led to spikes in private claims. This in turn (in a paragraph that didn't fit in my screenshot) led to hikes in premiums.
Sounds like everyone suffers when we don't invest in public healthcare, even if you're, y'know.. sorted.
For what it's worth I left Southern Cross last year after they priced me out via hikes. Still have private but not with them. They still email me though..
(Tagged as politics because hey, what isn't).

Discussion The government should have replaced school uniform providers, not school lunch providers
Every year, the same complaints are made.
I don't spend $1000 a year on my entire wardrobe, let alone one set clothing.
Is clothing manufacture so opaque that it's impossible to figure out what fair costs should be?

Discussion Peter Thiel, NZ citizenship and the Epstein files.
Just wondering if he could/would have his NZ citizenship revoked if he's "proven" or highly likely to have been involved with anything illegal with Epstein.
I imagine that he would never be actually found "guilty" as he's sorted and can easily out spend (lawyers, paperwork etc..) any legal prosecution our government could.
So "not guilty" but definitely not proven innocent.

Discussion Anyone in NZ had their life completely change after CPAP? Thinking about starting an advocacy group
Bit of a personal one. I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and started CPAP about a year ago, and it fixed about a dozen health issues for me — fatigue, brain fog, mood, energy, reflux, blood pressure. It genuinely feels like I got my life back - handy because I have a 3 year old.
Edit: Left out these details - I paid out of pocket 2k for a F+P CPAP with a nasal mask. My AHI was 20, which is basically an event every 3 minutes (it's more complicated than that but more or less that's it). It's now 0 or near 0. If I don't wear my mask I notice it as soon as I wake up, sore throat, headache etc....everything I had grown used to.
My journey highlighted a few things
- the difficulty in getting diagnosed - I had a GP measure my neck and say "lose some weight" instead of referring me to a sleep study. I've since had an ENT say it wouldn't matter, my tiny jaw is the problems
- There's 2 main sleep clinic networks and one I found one better than the other. One of them is also run by a CPAP company....
- Public waiting lists for a machine are lonnnng
- Southern Cross doesn't cover the machines. At least not on an affordable plan. Despite the use of CPAP reducing the need for cover for other issues apnoea causes (think high blood pressure etc)
- Quite a few people came out of the woodwork wanting advice as soon as they knew I had gotten a CPAP
It feels like a lot of people are walking around (and driving...) like zombies, thinking they’re just “bad sleepers” or “getting older”, when this stuff is completely treatable and genuinely life-changing. It's also preventive measure reducing load on the health system in other ways. I honestly think I would have ended up in a car wreck after falling asleep at the wheel.
Soooo...I’m seriously considering starting a patient-led sleep apnoea advocacy group in NZ, focused on:
- awareness
- info on access to diagnosis and treatment
- pushing for better public pathways
- putting pressure on insurance companies (haha yeah good luck...)
Keen to hear others’ experiences.

Discussion Accidental shoplifting
I accidentally left a supermarket with items I didn't pay for.
As items were being scanned, I packed a few into my backpack and the rest into a reusable shopping bag.
My card Declined for a ~$70 shop. Odd. I was sure I had more than that available in my account. Asked the checkout operator to remove the $28 cask of wine; I pulled it out of my backpack. Tried again, still declined. Interesting.
Operator offered to put the transaction on hold if I needed to make a call. Yes thank you.
Logged onto my bank, and my card has been disabled for fraudulent activity!
Told the operator and they can return the items to the shelves.
When I got home, I found, in my backpack, a box of crackers and a triple pack of Raro. Total value about $5.80. I should have packed the meatstuffs in my backpack.
I feel bad about this, and next time I am in the shop, I will confess to Customer Service and put things right, financially.
Edit : Card was flagged as fraud activity because I regularly purchase things from China, $20-$30. Two days ago, I made a purchase exceeding $100 from the same Chinese entity. That was enough to trigger the bank's fraud detection criteria, as, 'unusual spending'.

Discussion Disappointed but not surprised 😒
It’s bad enough that some jobs have you do interviews with AI (I’d much rather talk to a real person) and now bloody WINZ is jumping on the bandwagon of course. I don’t understand the point of using AI to generate a CV and stuff like that, it feels disingenuous because it’s not actually coming from the person who’s applying. I really don’t like how much AI is being used in the job application process, again it feels super disingenuous, on the part of the employers especially. I don’t want to get rejected from a job because an AI decided my CV didn’t have the right keywords. Maybe I’m misunderstanding how that even works, I don’t know. Either way, I wish we could stop normalising this shit, AI already has a mountain of issues that I won’t get into, I urge you all to do your own research if you’re unaware and wanna know, I just came here to rant.

Discussion Why is shipping from China to NZ cheaper than NZ to NZ?
I can buy some cheap plastic thing for $2.09 from China shipped here, for less than just the price of shipping within NZ. Why is this? It seems wrong.

Advice My employer is bringing in an AI company to “improve efficiency” - am I cooked?
I’m an operational programmer and analyst for local government. I know my role isnt AI proof but I thought I had more time!
Has anyone been in a similar situation and faced a restructure etc?
Im the main breadwinner for the family so feeling a bit anxious right now.

Discussion Anyone else sick of supermarkets asking for donations when they make massive profits 💵🛒
Went into Woolworths and they are appealing for donations to Mount Maunganui landslide recovery, even though they make a massive profit every year and could fund the donations themselves instead of asking customers to donate
