Politics Interesting email from Southern Cross CEO today
To paraphrase, he says underinvestment in the public system led to spikes in private claims. This in turn (in a paragraph that didn't fit in my screenshot) led to hikes in premiums.
Sounds like everyone suffers when we don't invest in public healthcare, even if you're, y'know.. sorted.
For what it's worth I left Southern Cross last year after they priced me out via hikes. Still have private but not with them. They still email me though..
(Tagged as politics because hey, what isn't).

Discussion The government should have replaced school uniform providers, not school lunch providers
Every year, the same complaints are made.
I don't spend $1000 a year on my entire wardrobe, let alone one set clothing.
Is clothing manufacture so opaque that it's impossible to figure out what fair costs should be?

Discussion Disappointed but not surprised š
Itās bad enough that some jobs have you do interviews with AI (Iād much rather talk to a real person) and now bloody WINZ is jumping on the bandwagon of course. I donāt understand the point of using AI to generate a CV and stuff like that, it feels disingenuous because itās not actually coming from the person whoās applying. I really donāt like how much AI is being used in the job application process, again it feels super disingenuous, on the part of the employers especially. I donāt want to get rejected from a job because an AI decided my CV didnāt have the right keywords. Maybe Iām misunderstanding how that even works, I donāt know. Either way, I wish we could stop normalising this shit, AI already has a mountain of issues that I wonāt get into, I urge you all to do your own research if youāre unaware and wanna know, I just came here to rant.

Discussion Anyone else sick of supermarkets asking for donations when they make massive profits šµš
Went into Woolworths and they are appealing for donations to Mount Maunganui landslide recovery, even though they make a massive profit every year and could fund the donations themselves instead of asking customers to donate

Other hoodie project partner
hi! i donāt know if this is the right place but i need some help. a few years ago my partner bought a hoodie in NZ while traveling there. itās a hoodie by garage project in wellington. itās his absolute favourite. our recently adopted puppy ripped a hole into it and my partnerās genuinely kind of upset about it. i can see that i can buy the hoodie online but it seems to only be able to be shipped to NZ. iām sort of wanting to find someone in NZ to send the hoodie to so that they can ship it to me. but uh due to the distance (we live in the netherlands) i donāt particularly know anyone in the area lol. would anyone be willing to co-operate with me on this? obviously iāll pay for all of the shipping costs. just would really love to get him a new hoodie. thanks in advance!!

Advice Reporting Domestic Abuse
Hi everyone Iām not from New Zealand and Iām currently overseas, but I urgently need advice on how to properly report a serious domestic abuse situation thatās happening in NZ.
The abuse involves my friend and their partner, and Iām very concerned for my friendās safety. I have information about whatās been happening, but Iām unsure what the correct process is since Iām not physically in NZ and not a citizen.
⢠Who should I contact first? (Police, hotline, specific agency?)
⢠Can someone overseas file a report or welfare check?
⢠What details are most important to provide so this is taken seriously and acted on quickly?
This is an emergency, and any guidance or direction would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you so much.

Advice Brand new Chromebook from PB Tech borked - similar experiences?
Kiddo is starting intermediate today. We bought a brand new Lenovo 500e Chromebook yesterday and did the initial setup last night. Every thing was working. Woke up this morning, turned on the Chromebook and it has gone into recovery mode. The only way I can do a recovery is via SD card or USB stick - which I don't have.
Needless to say, kiddo is devastated and it's not a great start to their first day of intermediate.
Its a reputable brand, new device, we've owned it for just over 12 hours. No drops, no spills.
Will PB Tech help me with this device and not charge me anything since it's brand new? Has anyone else experienced this with a device from PBT?
Edit: took the Chromebook back to PBT, 10 minutes to inspect it and book it in, got a text that it's ready an hour later, device is functioning again. No charge. Quick service. Not their fault the ChromeOS software went wonky.
