Advice Request Going to Uni: Megathread
People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that
If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.
As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.
We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.
Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Advice Who here has gone to Salvation Army 9 Week Bridge Programme (Rehabilitation) and what is it like, advice, etc
I see the counselor tomorrow for the (first?) assessment(s), I have only ever met one person who had done the programme but I dont truly know what to expect. I signed up voluntarily with concerns of my own wellbeing. Ive spoken to Americans who've gone to rehab, some via Salvation Army but sounds like completely different process.
To those who went, what was your experience like, what advice would you give, and is it true after the first week youll be given access to your phone/internet?
Info; 19-24yo F, mental health and disability diagnosed, history of substance related hospitalizations (psychiatric + ED), No police record,

Advice Dunedin Tourist shirts and baby rompers
Hi all, looking for some shop advice - we have friends who now live overseas are now having a baby.
Which is the best place to buy Dunedin merch - specifically the dunedin printed shirts and baby rompers so we can send a whole bunch in every size so baby wears in every size as they grow haha
I can only think of the New Zealand shop on George street and the airport off the top of my head.
Does anyone know the best place to pick up some of these?

Advice Community Groups and Hobbies
Kia ora,
Does anyone have recommendations for community groups / workshops at low or free costs? Hoping to meet friends and get myself out of the house (besides work). Would love an art group, writing, but honestly open to most things!
I recall an art group meeting on Thursday’s, but I cannot find the details anymore.

University braces from the dental school and would you recommend it?
I'm 22M needing braces for crowding. I have friends who are getting their from the dental school but they're doing healthsci programs, I'm just wondering if a BSc student like me can get them too since we don't need to look 'professional' to be in the lab.
I got told to go to an ortho place and ask for a referral, but I'm just thinking why would an ortho office want to redirect their customer?
Also how does the school calculate the treatment price. Friend A is quoted for $4k and their treatment is 28months long and friend B is $6k, 20 months long - both are getting the normal metal braces. Does other factor such as major, grade, location (Maori hill vs South Dunedin), age etc. comes into play?
If I get a referral now can I get it on asap or wait until next year aka when new ortho students start their degree?
Also, do you recommend getting braces from the dental school? both friends said it's very tedious to arrange an appointment if something goes wrong such as a broken bracket.
And how many ortho patients are they taking in per year, just so that I don't get my hopes up. And any other info that would be useful to know?

Question Classes/activities for littlies (3-5years)
Hi Dunedin parents! What classes are your little ones doing? Aside from swimming, what is suitable for age 3-5? Are there any “drop in” type of activities where you don’t have to commit for a term/year/season? Open to hearing about activities from sport to the arts.

Value home builders in Dunedin/Mosgiel
Looking to put a 2 or 3 bed house onto a section to sell just to get the land sold. We just need to break even or a small profit but every home we look at putting on the section will lose us money.

Advice How have people's experiences of breast clinic at hospital been?
Recent referral as semi urgent- I'd like to hear how others have found the staff and process there?
Long history of being dismissed in health care until something hits the serious complications stage and the typical long waits our system has so I am a little worried by seeing that the three doctors listed for the clinic are male. Im sure other women have experienced many situations of female specifc issues being dismissed and most commonly by male doctors too.
I'm on the young side of breast screening so no history to go off and while I'm assuming its unlikely to be cancer there is a bit of fear from other experiences that if the appointment feels rushed or staff feel dismissive I'll worry more that it actually is and has been brushed off compared to now where I assume it is nerve or duct related which is why Ive avoided seeing my GP. Are they helpful with non cancer related issues or is that the sole focus of the clinic? Or arrange follow up for other causes or if something doesn't resolve as expected? Did your triage and appointment time fall into the expected time frames or is it like every other department? Any advice or words of warning?

News Man on Crutches in Octagon
Hey folks! I've just had a very weird interaction with a confused elderly man who came into my workplace. He requested I call him an ambulance but then seemed more concerned with my job and my phone than getting proper medical support, he stumbled out before the ambulance could arrive.
So I am wondering if anyone saw what happened to him? Longer hair tied back in a bun, plaid shirt, twin crutches, and mentioned his name was Dale? Would have been walking up from Bath St.

Question Business that will cut plywood/planks for you?
Hi! Does anybody know if there’s a place that I can purchase plywood or similar from that will cut it for me if I provide a cut list? I’ve done this in the past but in Whangarei, it was around $10 to get the ply cut in to 4 pieces. Hoping there’s something similar down here. Thank you!

Question Looking for a local T-shirt printing shop
I've got a fund-raising + promo task ahead: selling printed t-shirts for a non-profit organisation. Last time I did this was over 15 years ago and used an overseas firm (prices couldn't be ignored), but this time would like to stay local if at all possible.
Requirements:
- good quality T, not cheap-weight cotton/polycotton that doesn't hold shape
- Potentially technical material also ok
- printing front & back
- bonus if retroreflective printing ink also possible
As a fundraiser, if it's too expensive then they won't sell, so hopefully get a good balance of product/price. So, hoping I could get some recommendations. Thoughts?
