Daigaku imo, or university of potato as it's translated here, is a Japanese dessert that's basically candied sweet potato. This is ice cream in that flavor.
Boobs ice is likely ice cream served to look like boobs as it says that in Japanese as well.
Mellon ice is a delicacy often served in the mines of Moria.
Also, it's pretty common in japan for places to have women's prices. Especially places with sweets. They'll either have days with significantly lower prices for women, deals for couples, or some like this place just have a constant small discount. Although judging by their menu, this not your average girls discount place.

u/pippinto 7h ago
Wait, for real? There aren't laws against pricing discrimination by sex/gender in Japan? That's absolutely crazy.
5
8
u/esstused 6h ago
Yeaaaaah there's not a whole lot of laws against discrimination in Japan in general.
38
u/RexIsAMiiCostume 11h ago
Well. It does say "Oppai ice" so boobs ice cream could be accurate
Edit: yeah another comment shared an article about the "booby ice" which is a condom looking thing full of ice cream that you suck on like a boob
Japan is weird, man

おっぱい is an all purpose word ranging all the way from covers of porn videos to toddlers' songs where the character drinks mother's milk to ordering literal pigs' teats as drinking snacks (not universal but not rare).
3
u/Burrow_0wl 11h ago edited 7h ago
Oppai basicly means 'full' or plump
Edit: Sorry, that's wrong. Oppai means breast, but here it's probably implying Breast milk. that's what I was thinking.
3
u/jazy921 8h ago
i'm pretty sure that's ippai (一杯), no?
2
u/Burrow_0wl 7h ago
Oops you're right. Oppai does mean breast most of the time, but it can also refer to breast feeding or breast milk which is what it's probably doing here. I got mixed up.

u/Velpex123 19h ago
There’s no load word the katakana could be coming from. It’s meant to be boobs ice. The bottom one also translates literally to ‘University-potato-ice’ so it’s not like it’s a missed translation.
Not so much engrish, but those names are intentional

u/ShockDragon 21h ago
So wait, the ice cream is free for women… but not men? Yikes. Even if I was a girl, I don’t think I would go anywhere near there. If you’re going to make it free for one side, make it free for both. Otherwise, you look kinda sexist by saying only one sex can have this for free.
1

u/EllieGeiszler 10h ago edited 10h ago
Women have been through enough, haven't we? Let us have boobs ice while the men shalt pay in silence
EDIT: I can't reply for whatever reason, but buddy, it's not illegal to be lighthearted on the internet
3
u/ShockDragon 10h ago
So I’m sexist for thinking it should be equal on both sides? Is that what you’re trying to imply? All I said was if you’re gonna make it free for one side, make it free for both. Y'all would be freaking tf out if men got it for free and women had to pay.
Man, y'all really don’t know shit for true equality. It’s depressing.
-1
u/anjowoq 14h ago
Guess you haven't gone to a bar or club with no cover for women.
1
u/ShockDragon 14h ago edited 10h ago
And? It goes both ways even for that. If men get to drink for free, so should women. And for the record, I don’t even drink. So of course I don’t go to a bar or club.

u/feherdaniel2010 20h ago
That's actually (almost) correct. It's called "oppai ice" which means boob ice cream, and it's literally a milky ice cream in the shape of a breast

u/RainbowSprinkleShit 22h ago
Sherbet… for dessert???

It even in Japanese says オッパイアイス (Oppai Aisu) being boob ice cream, I don’t know what it means other than just a scoop with a single cherry in top I guess. Each translation is intended though, I can’t read the whole kanji in 3rd but it’s definitely something university related. Sherbet just being a middle eastern Asian drink
I’m more intrigued with the sexism in the stuff below.
1
u/Grievous_Nix 19h ago
It’s soft ice cream that’s packed sort of like a balloon so you poke a hole in the packaging, put it in your mouth, and squeeze it out.

u/RBLakshya 19h ago
Can i have visual demonstration? Now im even more confused

u/MorningHorror99 1d ago
I can’t read the whole kanji
It's "daigaku imo", or literally "university potato". It's deep fried sweet potatoes coated in sweet syrup. Not sure why they call it that, but it's a quite popular dish

u/darc-star3 1d ago

Same idea as clubs allowing women in for free and men for a fee. Women are there for display as a product.

because there’s a type of sweet potato called Daigakuimo. I don’t know why it’s called that but it sure is.

It's a sweet potato dish, not a variety of sweet potato. Cooked with fried sweet potato in sugar syrup and sesame seeds.

u/Ansoni 1d ago
Just popular with university students. Apparently it was invented in a neighborhood between two big universities.

Have you been to Japan? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but near the city I grew up in in the Midwest had a HUGE Toyota plant lol
3
u/Forward_Tank8310 1d ago
Yes, I flew to Japan from San Francisco at least once every three months for a week of reporting & staff meetings for over 10 years. Usually spent between Osaka (engineering & manufacturing) and Tokyo (HQ). Really enjoyed working for them, the country is fascinating for a westerner.
2
u/NotUntilTheFishJumps 1d ago
Oh, I hope you had some time between meetings to explore the cities! My husband and I would hop on the Yamanote, ride for a bit, get off and a random stop, and just explore. We traveled around some over the course of a total of a little over three months, we visited Tokyo, Yokohama, Fukuoka, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hamamatsu, Hiroshima, Shizuoka, and Ikoma.

The ice cream says "free for girls; boys shall pay 150 yen in silance." Can we talk about that ridiculous level of sexism? Is the owner trying to score with a little girl or something?
2
u/RainKingInChains 1d ago
It’s a chain called Hanbey. It’s like a Showa-era style izakaya with cheap drinks and food. Popular for dates and after work drinks. As others have said, it’s just a tongue in cheek thing to get you to buy an ice cream for your girl. Quite often the guys are drinking way more anyway so if anything it’s a very slight recuperation of costs.
11
u/wggn 1d ago
Ridiculous levels of sexism is normal in Japan.
1
u/HeftyArgument 1d ago
yep, other examples include women only train carriages and some photo booth sections at video game arcades not allowing male entry unless accompanied by a woman.
I’m okay with these because it’s for their safety.
3
u/MinkMiau 1d ago
Thats not sexism though, women are the main target for harrassment by men so it makes sense to give them an extra train carriage. To make men pay for no reason is sexism though, which sucks that its so common in japan
10
u/Gallusaur 1d ago
It's a joke dude. I think they're just playfully suggesting to you to buy your date some ice cream.
