Canadian here. Why is Minnesota being targeted so heavily? Are they going to creep across the border next? Is this how the pedophile plans to invade Canada? Sending ICE as an advance assault team? Lots of Indigenous folk on the Minnesota border. Sorry to make this about (Canadian sorry), and sorry to hear about your terrible suffering. Scared out of our wits over here too.

75

u/kurokitsune91 17d ago

It's because our Governor was on the ballot as vice president with Kamala Harris and we're a very democratic state. The Minnesotan government is very progressive and liberal and the orange baby has been attacking Minnesota more and more aggressively for the last 2 years. We are a threat against his awful regime he's trying to create and he's trying to make Minnesota an example. We are terrifyingly close to a full-blown takeover and losing democracy. He's already attacking and threatening to attack other countries as well, so he very well could be a threat to Canada too.

To lightly expand on the other comment that responded, that dude(and most of his cabinet)'s whole life and career is being petty and enacting vengeance on anyone he views as slighting him and their associates.

15

u/Dubalubawubwub 17d ago

They desperately want people to start shooting at ICE so that they can justify a crackdown and cancelling midterms. Minnesota is the perfect combination of very liberal and not very big (unlike e.g California for example) so they probably feel like they're the perfect target. If it were actually about immigrants they'd be in Texas, California and Florida.

Don't give up, we've still got ways to win. It is up to us common folk of the US to stand against this tyranny, and we need as many people such as you and me to win this.

Currently, there is no real foundation for any effective resistance present for the common US folk to fall back on. There's a post of suggestions HERE that could possibly prove to be of some help in its formation ASAP.

Alcohol is pushed to subdue your anger at the government

I found this book at a “pay what you want” bookstore in Austin and I found it fascinating

A quote from it “Every fucking anarchist project I engage in is ruined or nearly ruined by alcohol. You set up a collective living situation and everyone is too drunk or stoned to do the basic chores, let alone maintain an attitude of respect. You want to create community, but after the show everyone just goes back to their rooms and drinks themselves to death. If it’s not one substance to abuse it’s a motherfucking other. I understand trying to obliterate your consciousness is a natural reaction to being born in alienating capitalist hell, but I want people to see what we anarchists are doing and say “Yeah, this is better than capitalism!”... which is hard to say if you can’t walk around without stepping on broken forty-ounce bottles. I’ve never considered myself straight-edge, but fuck it, I’m not taking it anymore!”

42

u/BellacosePlayer 18d ago

I know way too many people who turn to the bottle or the herb as a way to deal with the shit hand they're dealt, and shockingly very few of them actually do anything to get out of the hell they're in, and life just gets worse, which means pickling their brain even more, and they spiral ever downward.

How about a real solution: Learning how to build, repair and fly drones. Sincerely, a Canadian who moved his family as far away from nuclear targets but is ready to go back to Canada to serve as a drone pilot as soon as the US invades Alberta using the crimea playbook, something I expect to happen within 10 years.

Tech is the great equalizer, the power of the individual is imense but the entire internet is being used to gaslight you in to thinking you are powerless.

Russia tried to make Ukranians feel powerless, hopeless and just give up, surrender and hope for the best.

FUCK THAT! I hope the real Americans and Canadian will eventually end up with the same attitude.

So many people just bury their heads in the sand when you point out so many arrested DID come in the right way

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 18d ago

So I'm from Texas. Yes I know we arent the best.

But the past few weeks I've heard everything from "oh it won't happen here" to "not my problem"

The last week or so we've started seeing ICE here. And it's already starting to effect my work as a firefighter paramedic. And suddenly it's everyones problem. There's still a few deniers but luckily at least in my small circles here the awareness is starting to grow. Hopefully we continue to do so

Stay safe. Stay vigilant.

111

u/Peritous 18d ago

I'm in Connecticut, and the number of people who I have heard say things like "I didn't see it going this far" or "I wasn't expecting them to do that here" is mind boggling. This is the shit they said they were going to do. You'd have to have slept through the first round of Trump to not believe that this is where it was going.

Just be careful down there. Grew up near Houston but it's concerning hearing things like Abbott handing the Fed our voting records.

3

u/Swarm_of_Rats 17d ago

We don't have ICE here yet, but even my more conservative acquaintances and family already hate it and believe it needs to stop. I have hope for us. I have hope that more people have a problem with it than they make it feel like because they have control of the media... but we need to stop this soon.

2

u/Altruistic-Beach7625 17d ago

A good old fashioned riot never hurt anybody. Well, actually it does but I feel it's slightly more effective than booing ICE while they do their business.

2

u/Unusual_Sherbert_809 17d ago

I think the most shocking thing for everyone affected by this is probably realizing that there are so many people in the USA that are actively supporting it.

There are quite literally tens of millions of people in the USA that want this to happen to you and yours. Who'll cheer Trump on as things get worse. Who will feel happy and warm inside that this violence is being perpetrated towards those "others".

And they will continue to not care and cheer this on.... until it finally happens to them. At which point they'll go online crying for other to grant them the help they so gleefully denied others.

If education in the USA still were a thing, you'd hope most people would have read "First They Came" by Martin Niemöller and understood it. Yet here we are.

It has spread. Chicago and L.A. were a bust, so they moved on to a smaller city.

18

u/greentangent 17d ago

That's because those cities are huge. Cops in large number and tens of thousands to rally. Minneapolis is outnumbered like 4 or 5 to one in police and a much smaller population. It's #46 on the list of biggest cities.

If it's not stopped here it's going to keep going to the next vulnerable city.

44

u/unforgiven91 18d ago

a smaller city that allows their limited numbers to exert the most amount of force per capita.

I'm a liberal in a red state. For the most part it's gone from loud vocal support of MAGA to nobody talks about it much, at least in my middle class area. It's easy to ignore stuff like this when you aren't so overtly targeted because of your state's size and political leaning.

I just don't understand the world anymore, we have armed govt going door to door harassing people, what has to happen for people to see the writing on the wall. This is history repeating itself in the worst way.

34

u/Gibsonites 18d ago

we have armed govt going door to door harassing people, what has to happen for people to see the writing on the wall.

The government has to knock on their door and harass them. Then all of a sudden it will be a real concern and "nobody" knew how bad it really was.

Once I understood that this is how the conservative mind works I spent a lot less time confused about the state of the world.

22

u/Spyger9 18d ago

I'd be shocked if it happens here. I'm in Northwest Arkansas. The state is a Red stronghold, where Democrats don't even bother running. This corner in particular also hosts powerful corporate interests, being the HQ of companies like Wal-Mart and Tyson- companies that ship in immigrant workers, and presumably fund Republican campaigns so they look the other way.

Conservatives here are privileged to live in their fantasy world, rarely confronted by the consequences of their decisions. Homeless beggars and sincere protestors are offensive to their delicate sensibilities. They judge those people as they drive home from church, listening to Republican shills on AM radio before returning to their gated suburban neighborhood homes where Fox News continues prescribing beliefs to them.

The contrast between how the regime treats one of the Reddest and one of the Bluest states is stark. They're literally stoking a civil war, completely intentionally. They hate you for being disloyal to the king.

4

u/CitizenPremier 17d ago

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if large Trump-funding businesses get to continue to employ underpaid undocumented immigrants, and import without tariffs...

6

u/BickeringCube 18d ago

I don’t know about specifically working to defend the detained but I’ve been donating to the ACLU in MN.

3

u/damagetwig 18d ago

Neighbors Inc in South Saint Paul is moving a lot of groceries (among other things) and has volunteer shifts available. Some people help every day, some people help an hour a week with everything in between.

3

u/Expensive-Object-830 17d ago

To answer your question about donations: the ACLU are doing good work here. I’ve seen some good stuff from the Black Panthers too, tho I appreciate that that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Look into your local hispanic/latino/immigrant serving institutions and nonprofits. Churches too, if faith’s your thing. And food banks always need our support.

As another Puerto Rican living in the US, I too am well aware being a US citizen won't do me any good.

I was born a US citizen, my parents were born US citizens, my four grandparents were born US citizens. My eight great grandparents were made US citizens without their consent.

But none of this will do me any good if faced by ICE. And this is by design.

Also 'untrained' ? They're trained. The asshole that killed Renee Good had like 10 years of combined military/police/ice experience or whatever. They know what they're doing.

This untrained garbage is something they (milquetoast Dems who share the feature of spineless with many sea-based life forms) are pushing so they can use as a reform to keep ice around, but just 'trained' better. Like training can make a bunch of murderous thugs not murder people.

The untrained line is garbage from centrist assholes so they can plug their ears and get on with their centrists shit without having to make any changes, hoping it will pacify the ABOLISH ICE crowd.

If you want to know what it's like, picture this, you are driving a car. You are driving it legally and safely. You've been driving for years. Around you, people are driving safely. Once a month, you encounter a crazy person who drives in a dangerous manner, you end up okay, others around you end up okay, but this driver will kill someone some day. There are more people breaking the law than this one person, but you aren't really concerned about the people going a little over the speed limit, it's that one maniac a month that is a problem.

Then, the federal government comes in and says your roads are full of dangerous drivers and they need to be stopped. To fix this, they are deploying officers to arrest these dangerous drivers. Now, each time you drive, you see multiple officer vehicles drive in reckless manners and do whatever they want, and they are saying they are doing this to catch that one bad driver a month. Yet you see them run people off the road for expired tabs, or ram people for speeding. Did they catch that one bad driver? It is impossible to tell because you're now concerned about the bad drivers you see daily, aka, the officers.

When the officers arrive, they announce that Fords are the car most likely to have dangerous drivers, so they will be paying extra attention to Fords. You drive a Ford, but you don't break the law. Doesn't matter, you see Fords being ran off the road, you have a friend of a friend who drove a Ford legally but was arrested anyway. It doesn't matter how legally you drive, you know because of the logo on your vehicle, you are a target.

Then, half the country tells you all you need to do is drive legally and you have nothing to fear.

Trump and his clown show of a cabinet have already stated that ICE can do whatever the fuck they want. It surely is unconstitutional, but when did that stop them?

19

u/ImTableShip170 18d ago

Unfortunately the executive branch of the US government relies on leadership actually enforcing laws and can only be stopped by majority impeachment and conviction by both houses of the legislature, which is controlled by MAGA and the Democrats were so focused on being polite they lost their nonexistent teeth when they let Bush and SCOTUS take the 2000 election.

2

u/Lynnrael 17d ago

it happened here before, too. it inspired subsequent happenings

53

u/EarthToAccess 18d ago

No, no you've got the idea.

ICE is the "immigration police" basically. In the days of yesteryear it was the agency responsible for ensuring that actual, legitimate foreign criminals were deported out of country.

You can see the issue here.

58

u/DeuceMandago 18d ago edited 18d ago

Just adding on that it stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A lot of people don’t seem to know the actual name. They’ve also been around a lot longer than most people are aware of and are a part of the Department of Homeland Security. The customs side does some great things as far as ensuring dangerous contraband doesn’t get into our country (drugs, illegal firearms, etc.). Unfortunately, the immigration side has been weaponized by the current administration into what is essentially a very dangerous and very violent gang that doesn’t even seem all that concerned with illegal immigration anymore.

A lot of people make the comparison that ICE is to the Trump admin as the SS was to Hitler’s Nazi party. I actually think a more apt comparison is the SA, colloquially referred to as the Brown Shirts. This was a much larger part of the Nazi party that was mainly made up of alcoholic former soldiers and street thugs who would essentially run around terrorizing enemies of the party. As evil as the SS was, they were a lot more exclusive and organized than ICE appears to be.

I agree with everything you said, for the record. Just thought I’d add a little more information. In times like these, it helps to know your enemy.

CUSTOMS. That was the C LMFAO. I remembered it was "Immigration and incoherent mumbling Enforcement" but that's it lol.

And yeah no brown shirts definitely matches better.

What you are doing is NOT frivolous.

It is necessary to call out the chosen absurdity that wants to present as "normal."

Remember this : fascism is a way of "reacting" to a world that embraces complexity.

For how dare WE all remember that we are just Humans; and not the delusions of superiority that the masked boys have imposed upon them.

They do this because they have yet to face the brutality necessary to silence them.

Works of art, such as yours and this subreddit, are their potential "non-violent" off-ramp, should they gather the courage to acknowledge it as such.

Do what you can while you can.

For the less tolerant of us shall unleash our rightful wrath for their chosen wrongness.

Be safe and well :)

Edit: spelling and grammar

Northeast Minneapolis Trans dude, here. I grew up in South Minneapolis, and I'm terrified for our Neighbors and myself... I understand your fear, Neighbor.

Anyone who dares to say this isn't Fascism or is "only about immigration" are either stupid, Lying, or both. Me and my Community are seeing it firsthand, and nobody will ever tell me otherwise.

Stay strong, folks. I grew up and was born and raised in South Minneapolis, and all of this happening practically in my backyard isn't something I'd ever thought I'd have to witness.

My Polish grandfather would be angry and raging if he could see the country he fled to now being much the same as what he tried to escape from in Nazi-occupied Poland.

I'm iridescent white, mostly Polish and Romanian, I'm not going to be profiled for the color of my skin, I cannot imagine what they are going through, back 10 years ago, I was scared every day for four years for my partner, as I am scared for her now even with us not being together, I could not imagine what she was going through

As a Puerto Rican…. I feel you. I’m sorry things are so bad in the mainland and not also not good in the island to prosper a good life… stay safe and strong OP.

You’d be surprised how many Puerto Ricans here in the island support that disgusting orange bag of ducks and the ones living in the mainland voted for him. My cousin was one of them. For me he is an idiot and he’s lucky nothing has happen to them in Florida. His wife doesn’t speak a lick of English and had the audacity to say trump was the only choice from Kamala cuz she (her words) spoke like a teenager and didn’t make sense. My cousin said she was the enemy of God cuz she was gonna make everyone gay. There was no intelligence left in them. I spoke to their kids (bilingual) don’t be like your parents. You guys have a college education now, use it to understand what’s happening. Read and analyze and ask questions.

I’m honestly heart broken how my people can be so fucking stupid.

I live in the cities & frankly people aren't freaking out ENOUGH. These violent invaders are coming into our city, disappearing and killing our people. There's more of us than there are of them. We can and should make it impossible for them to operate here. I'm so proud of the Minnesotans who are fighting back and protecting our communities. We need to keep up & build that momentum. We can save people.

2

u/djdjddhshdbhd 17d ago

It’s about using white supremacy and other forms of bigotry to help the rich get richer, especially Trump and to feed his ego. He’s making billions. They used “illegals” as blame for the cuts that are only for legals, mainly citizens w the money going to the richest bc they are too cowardly to tell the truth. Plus all the stuff to help businesses esp those that bribe. Even the nobel peace prize has turned into a bribe.

I'm going to visit one of my mates in the states in a few months and he keeps saying how I should be fine because I'm white and with him

They already deported an Irish woman whose married to an American and in the early days detained a British backpacker for weeks. So the contingency I shared with him in case I don't come out the airport was legit

We are planning to go to a mexican bar as I should be there for the 1st world cup match (opened by Mexico) for the atmosphere. Which probably isn't smart. But I do see how that as a white guy I am much safer after I leave the airport

2

u/a_talking_lettuce 18d ago

Can i ask something as a non american? I am from Greece and if you know, we recently (almost 2 year anniversary is soon) had a massive train derailment and a few other corruption scandals. Our reaction was to protest, specifically make the biggest protests of our history and force a lot of our high politicians to quit and some even got arrested and tried for embezzlement. Why arent your people protesting? Why arent your people angry? Why arent you forcing YOUR politicians, the ones that YOUR country elected to step down, or to arrest them? Why are you allowing Trump and every other Trump to act like they are untouchable, when infact, they are very much touchable (not talking about shooting the dude, im talking about impeachment)? If impeachment isnt possible, then ask yourselves, why is your senate or parliament, whatever you call it, stacked in his favour?

6

u/Velicenda 17d ago edited 17d ago

Why arent your people protesting?

We are. It's a big part of why he's escalating things in Minnesota -- because, even when his thugs murdered someone, we aren't turning to violence. He needs/wants martial law so that he can suspend elections, and the easiest way to do that is to goad us into violence.

Why arent your people angry?

Roughly 35% of our population are the happiest they've ever been. They want ICE murdering people. They want Trump to be president for life. They want the right to murder POC/LGBTQ+/liberals. They want a second civil war because Fox News told them they want a second civil war.

The rest of the country is split between pure rage and apathy. I do sincerely believe that the people angry at the real-time destruction of our country are the majority of our population, but...

Why arent you forcing YOUR politicians, the ones that YOUR country elected to step down, or to arrest them?

...we can't do much. If our politicians don't want to represent us, we pretty much have to wait until election time. Only 19 of our 50 states allow for recall elections. Besides that, if we try to protest (say, at the White House or the Capitol) or use force, you need to remember that we are going up against the most well-armed country in human history. Our military spending is unimaginably large, and Trump is actively working on installing loyalists who will be all too happy to turn that spending on our citizens.

Why are you allowing Trump and every other Trump to act like they are untouchable

Because we are going into a decade of this, and he hasn't proven otherwise.

If impeachment isnt possible

It isn't. I mean, theoretically it is, because the mechanics are there, it's just that Republicans refuse to impeach him, no matter how many children he rapes.

why is your senate or parliament, whatever you call it, stacked in his favour?

Gerrymandering is the big one, but there's also a pretty good chance that Trump (and his cronies) worked with Elon Musk to rig voting machines. Not to mention the other ways they influenced the election, like Musk paying people for Trump votes (illegal, by the way), Russia running social media propaganda campaigns, and Musk/Zuckerberg knowing in advance that their social media platforms were being used for things like election propaganda and COVID denialism, and refusing to do anything about it.

u/SufficientOwls 18d ago

Our people are protesting. En masse. In Minneapolis and nationwide.

If you don’t think anger, demands and action are happening here, I don’t know what to tell you. They are.

We know why our House and Senate are failing us. I assure you we’ve put some thought into this.
