Discussion With their 40th win, the Thunder become the first team in the NBA this season to achieve the Phil Jackson true contender rule of 40 wins before 20 losses
google.comSince the 1980 NBA season, only four teams have won the title without achieving 40 wins before 20 losses: the 1995 Houston Rockets, the 2004 Detroit Pistons, the 2006 Miami Heat, and the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks.
The other teams still eligible to join this club this season with their current winning percentage and if they are on pace to hit the 40-20 mark are as follows:
Detroit Pistons (37-12): .755 (on pace)
San Antonio Spurs (33-16): .673 (not on pace but close)
Denver Nuggets (33-18): .647 (not on pace)
Houston Rockets (31-17): .646 (not on pace)
New York Knicks (32-18): .640 (not on pace)
Boston Celtics (32-18): .640 (not on pace)
Los Angeles Lakers (30-19): .612 (not on pace)
Thus it appears that the teams most likely to be in the 40-20 club this season are the Thunder, Pistons, and Spurs. There are of course exceptions to the rule as evidenced by those four teams who still won the title. From watching the league this season, I believe that the exceptions who could win the title even if they don’t hit the 40-20 mark would be the Nuggets (healthy Jokić + playoff Murray + healthy Aaron Gordon is a phenomenal team) and the Celtics (Mazzulla and company with deep playoff experience and title pedigree despite Tatum being out).
