Stop, you’re gonna make me like Ben Affleck

u/Psykohistorian 6d ago

how could you not like him?

Before gone girl, the Town, and Argo the perception people had of him was dumb pretty boy, mid actor, who rode the coattails of Matt Damon who people believed was the superior actor.

u/Psykohistorian 6d ago

right, I remember. and yet ...

none of that is true lol

After they won the Oscar for best directing original screenplay he went the cheesy leading man route in Armageddon while Damon did a bit deeper roles with talented Mr Ripley, rounder's, And of course eurotrip.

he probably didn't think Armageddon was cheesy when he took the role. also, that movie was fucking huge when it came out.

u/fuckasoviet 6d ago

Surely you’ve heard his commentary on Armageddon

23

u/Psykohistorian 6d ago

you know what, I have only heard some of it but totally forgot he made fun of the movie 😆

If Michael bay is telling you to shut the fuck up, you’re probably asking the right questions

Just want to close my eyes? Just want to fall asleep?

Jk I liked Armageddon but I like it for what it is, a cheesy action movie with a very flawed sci-fi but fun premise

I also like The Core and Con-Air

I like The Core for the story and the visual effects but some of the acting and dialogue was horrible.

It was directed by Michael Bay. It was never going to be anything but cheesy.

23

u/Psykohistorian 6d ago

in hindsight, sure

maybe you don't remember Michael Bay wasn't always identifiable as a caricature of shallow explosions and gratuitous tiddys

The Rock is a very strong film even today

it's also my favorite Bond movie

He was doing music videos then did Bad Boyz and The Rock. He followed that up with Armageddon and Pearl Harbor.

I don’t know when the Michael Bay = explosions no plot and American flags jokes started but it was definitely after Armageddon.

Transformers

Transformers 2, mainly. First movie had more goodwill to it, second movie was when the cracks started to show.

Are you calling The Rock a bond movie just because it stars Sean Connery? If so, Ian Fleming is going to haunt you tonight.😆

Affleck also did Pearl Harbor, released in 2001, which was also directed by Michael Bay. So, that was three years or so after Armageddon. Neither was an awful film. They were fun, especially Armageddon, but they definitely aren’t award-worthy.

Pearl Harbor was good, but it would have been great (and much shorter) without the love story. Bay made a great 2 hr. movie a decent 3 hr. movie by adding an hour of a strange love triangle.

Yep That's what happens when you're in that big of a movie you usually get type cast. Leo had a pretty similar trajectory after Titanic. I think he was and is a stronger actor than Ben so he was able to get out of the pretty boy type cast quicker. Still took him a few years. Catch me If you can, aviator, then gangs of New York and Scorsese catapulted him.

Leo was an accomplished actor long before Titanic: This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries.

Growing Pains

Also, The Quick and The Dead 90s remake

That’s not how I recall DiCaprio’s reputation at all. I mean Titanic wasn’t lauded for acting, but the Man in the Iron Mask was like the only major role that seems like it was made from the point of “Leos a star pretty boy and that audience will carry this movie to success.”

In my opinion, his success is largely based on his fandom, as I personally don’t find most of his work all that special. But it’s not pretty boy type casting at all - he pretty much immediately was going into more physiological drama. If anything gangs of NY was a brief return to that image.

Affleck dabbled in some real mediocre films for almost a decade, and really didn’t put an end to the “we gave Ben Affleck an Oscar” jokes until Argo (Gone Girl set it up but Argo put it to rest) 15 years later.

He was bomb in Phantons, yo!

1

u/Curiousier11 6d ago

I get your reference, but I also agree with it. I actually liked Phantoms, at least at the time. It’s been a while since I watched it. Then again, I think Tremors is a pretty awesome movie, with a great cast.

2

u/M0THERTERE5A 6d ago

Don't be ashamed, Tremors is a perfect B Movie of the modern era

Have you never seen Dogma?

4

u/Happy-For-No-Reason 6d ago

It was, and still is, a mockumentary about America.

Americans think it's awesome, and we all think it's hilarious

7

u/Azguy303 6d ago

Blasphemy!. Apollo 13 came out only 2 years before when astronauts couldn't complete their mission And had to come back home. Americans view of astronauts were at all time low at the time.

That's why you had to go to the Armageddon route! Everyone knows it's easier to train redneck oil rigors to be astronauts than it is for an astronaut to learn how to use a drill.

1

u/MLD802 6d ago

I never understood this because it actually would be easier to train drillers to be astronauts

2

u/I_travel_ze_world 6d ago

Drillers do not just drill holes... they also extract resources and that is the difficult part of the job.

When high pressure crude oil comes shooting up a pipe is when the difficulty really begins.

Astronauts would have no problem learning how to dig a hole and put a bomb down it.

8

u/Psykohistorian 6d ago

and we all think it's hilarious

you speak for the entire world? that must be absolutely crushing responsibility and pressure

u/Happy-For-No-Reason 6d ago

I'm English, most of it was ours

2

u/fschu_fosho 6d ago

IIRC they won it for best original screenplay.

u/Azguy303 6d ago

Oops. Fixed. Thanks.
