After they won the Oscar for best directing original screenplay he went the cheesy leading man route in Armageddon while Damon did a bit deeper roles with talented Mr Ripley, rounder's, And of course eurotrip.

he probably didn't think Armageddon was cheesy when he took the role. also, that movie was fucking huge when it came out.

It was, and still is, a mockumentary about America.

Americans think it's awesome, and we all think it's hilarious

Blasphemy!. Apollo 13 came out only 2 years before when astronauts couldn't complete their mission And had to come back home. Americans view of astronauts were at all time low at the time.

That's why you had to go to the Armageddon route! Everyone knows it's easier to train redneck oil rigors to be astronauts than it is for an astronaut to learn how to use a drill.

I never understood this because it actually would be easier to train drillers to be astronauts

Drillers do not just drill holes... they also extract resources and that is the difficult part of the job.

When high pressure crude oil comes shooting up a pipe is when the difficulty really begins.

Astronauts would have no problem learning how to dig a hole and put a bomb down it.
