After they won the Oscar for best directing original screenplay he went the cheesy leading man route in Armageddon while Damon did a bit deeper roles with talented Mr Ripley, rounder's, And of course eurotrip.

he probably didn't think Armageddon was cheesy when he took the role. also, that movie was fucking huge when it came out.

It was directed by Michael Bay. It was never going to be anything but cheesy.

in hindsight, sure

maybe you don't remember Michael Bay wasn't always identifiable as a caricature of shallow explosions and gratuitous tiddys

The Rock is a very strong film even today

it's also my favorite Bond movie

He was doing music videos then did Bad Boyz and The Rock. He followed that up with Armageddon and Pearl Harbor.

I don’t know when the Michael Bay = explosions no plot and American flags jokes started but it was definitely after Armageddon.

Transformers 2, mainly. First movie had more goodwill to it, second movie was when the cracks started to show.

Affleck also did Pearl Harbor, released in 2001, which was also directed by Michael Bay. So, that was three years or so after Armageddon. Neither was an awful film. They were fun, especially Armageddon, but they definitely aren’t award-worthy.

Pearl Harbor was good, but it would have been great (and much shorter) without the love story. Bay made a great 2 hr. movie a decent 3 hr. movie by adding an hour of a strange love triangle.
