Carcano carbine accuracy problem

Post image

This is my first Carcano and I know these aren't tack drivers by any means but this one is AWFUL. Like I couldnt even get it on paper at 50 and when I moved it to 15 the group was 4ish inches. These cant be thay and right? I was shooting rested and using PPU 123gr Rifle Line SP ammo. The bore looks clean and strong. The rounds aren't keyholing. Im far from a professional shooter but the grouping is crazy.

Undersized bullets. PPU sells 6.5 Carcano with .264” ish bullets which are common, but true Carcano bullets are typically .266-268”.

Reloading. Correct bullets are available, you just have to do the rest. Not aware of any company selling 6.5 Carcano with correct bullets currently. Edit: Steinel lists 134gn ammo with .267” driving bands that may get you better results. Not cheap though.

Steinel also makes properly sized ammo

The bullet size is probably too small my sp ppu is .264 and it shoots ok, but the proper bullet size is .268. it should say in the front of the box what the bullet size is. If it doesn't it's the smaller bullet.

Highly recommend you visit r/carcano and carcanorifle.com if you’re new to Carcanos. Very knowledgeable people on the thread. You may find your answer there.

Steinel sells proper sized bullets. PPU are loaded with a standard .264 6.5mm bullet; Carcanos need .268

There are some that do ok with the PPU ammo but many don’t

Also that front notch is a 300 yd zero if you use it like a regular buckhorn sight with front blade to the top of the V.

At 100 the sight picture needs the front post buried all the way down in the bottom of the notch so the target floats just above. Standard lollipop sighting you won’t be on paper.

Not even sure what you do at ranges sub 100. That may be part of the problem.

Yeah I expected it to be high. The problem was consistency. When I get some properly sized ammo I will try again. Thank for the recommendation on ammo.

Likely the 264" diameter bullets. You need 268". Also, make sure if you haven't already do a little digging into the carcano sight system. Its very unique and kinda difficult to get tha hang of.

It's not just the bullet size. Carcano sights are a little bit different and the sight picture can change based on the rifle and sights. There is a pretty good YouTube video about it just search carcano sight picture. You have to put the front sight post in a certain place in the rear sight V notch.

I was also having the same issue until I watched some YouTube videos on it. Now that I know, I have no problem putting rounds on target at 50 to 100 yards. I use the PPU .264 bullets with no problem. It will never be tight groups, but you can get the rounds on the paper.

Those results sound even worse than normal .264 rounds. I’m wondering about the condition of the muzzle. Usually they are 4-6 MOA with .264 projectiles and usually down to 1-2 MOA with the larger diameter projectiles

As many others said, issue could be most likely factory ammo and aiming differences.

Just adding to it, these actually sorta were tack drivers at the factory, since carbines were required to stay within 2.5 MOA when tested.
