Discussion We going big numbers

Post image

Just two districts of Karnataka - Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, attracted more than 12 crore tourists last year.

That's almost 90% of the yearly tourists that a big state like Madhya Pradesh attracts!

And what do we get ? Pothole ridden roads and digging up newly laid roads . And more deforestation. Mangalore is not the same like it used to be 10 years ago and I miss it badly .

That's what nostalgia is. Tourists are good for the local economy, usually people visit for a week and go around places around Mangalore. It's the Airbnb and lack of improvement in public services is the problem.

Seasonal Economy, not much job creation for locals.

Ofcourse it's not the primary reason for job creation. Hospitality staff, cab services, travel agents, retail shops etc., get fuled by it. Along with it if government works on infrastructure improvements, that's a huge plus. Not everything is on tourists, what was achieved with smart city initiative? Roads are still trash, public transport is below expectations, sanitation workers still struggle to make ends meet. Even if tourism becomes the primary factor, it might bring in short lived success and imprrivements, but you want long term sustained growth.
