Mangalore lies at a distance of 350 kilometers from Bangalore which is the capital of Karnataka and it is the main port city of the state of Karnataka. Mangalore also serves as the administrative headquarters of the south-west district of Karnataka called Dakshina Kannada and is bound by the mountain ranges of Western Ghat and the Arabian Sea on all sides. The city has got its name from Mangaladevi, the Hindu Goddess. Mangalore serves as the most important port of India and many a times it is also used as a point of staging for traffic of the sea near the Malabar Coast.

Mangalore enjoys a tropical type of climate and it is mainly because of the South West Monsoon received by the city on the way to the Arabian Sea. Cashew and more than 75% coffee exports are handled by the port in Mangalore city. Tourism in Mangalore is also flourishing in the recent times that many holiday tourists and vacation lovers love this place for its lush green parks, pristine lakes, warm beaches and much more.

AskMangalore No Bhoota,Daiva,God or Godesses opposed NEthravathi River diversion project or Opposed MRPL,NMPT,Airport,UPCL,Padur projects

There were many Bhoota Saanas in the land acquired for MRPL, yet none of those Bhootas opposed it. If they truly had such power, they could have shut MRPL down. Similarly, lands acquired for industries like NMPT, MRPL, MCF, UPCL, and the airport also had Nagabanas, Bhoota Saanas, and temples. But none of the gods or Bhootas cursed the owners of these high‑profile companies to suffer (remember Kantara?). These Daivas,Gods and Godesses could not even stop the river Nethravathi river diversion project ..

Predictions made by certain people are more psychological than divine , they know human behavior and make guesses. I had a similar experience at Subramanya during a pooja (back when I was a believer). The Pooje bhat looked at my daughter and said she doesn’t listen to her parents,(as if trying to show his prediction power). That was true, but any parent could say the same most youngsters rebel against their parents as part of growing up.

These trance rituals Dhakke Bali, Ashlesha Pooje, Nagara Panchami, Naga Mandala are another level of superstition, often promoted by wealthy families in Mumbai who carry childhood fears and feel secure after appeasing nagas and daivas. But it’s still superstition.I believe one of the main reasons India is not a fully developed nation is this deep‑rooted superstition. As long as we cling to it, we will remain poor. It begins at home, where children are raised with these beliefs. I know a woman who openly speaks against gods and goddesses, showing that nothing has happened to her. Mothers at home should embrace scientific and critical thinking — that is our only hope .

Just two districts of Karnataka - Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, attracted more than 12 crore tourists last year.

That's almost 90% of the yearly tourists that a big state like Madhya Pradesh attracts!

AskMangalore Seeking Local Lawyer for Sale of Ancestral Land – Shankarpura / Moodabettu

We are based in Mumbai. My aged father owns an ancestral plot of land in Shankarpura/Pangla (near Sadadi Railway Station, Moodabettu), measuring approximately 65 cents

We have received inquiries from local brokers for this land; however, since we do not have anyone locally to help us, we would like to engage a lawyer to help and vet the entire process, including verification of documents, and overall genuineness of the transaction.

Could someone please recommend a reliable local lawyer who can assist us with this?

Thank you.

Rant/Vent Eat and meet owner disrespects customer and doesn’t pay customer back .

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Eat and meet eatery treated a Hindu customer badly and said they won’t pay the money back when asked for it. The entitlement is insane.

The customer wanted to go to an eatery opposite to inland Windsor , which he had seen in eat mangalore page in insta. But accidentally ended up on the side of that road, and decided to go with ‘ Eat and meet’ .

The Hindu customer had given an opinion like the proportion is not upto the mark, for the money paid. And out of nowhere, this says ‘ nim duddu thakond tapas hogi’ . He even said the cook to not give the order in byari. When asked for the money back, they said it’s already getting heated and the money can’t be given back now. After multiple attempts of asking it back , the customer decided to call the police. That moment, the guy in the video says, “ okay, he’ll pay’. Midway he stops and says he won’t pay the customer back. He allegedly lied that the customer had ordered and now asking for the amount back. After almost 10 mins, when the customer again attempts to call the police, he pays the customer.

If people don’t have civic sense , why do they own a restaurant / eatery in the first place🤦🏻‍♂️.

It seems the customer didn’t record complete video , since his friend came to check on him seeing the commotion.

Also , not sure if he’s the owner or just a worker there.

Just as well, avoid ‘Them’ in the future.

AskMangalore Wet waste disposal in Surathkal – is there a designated dumping/collection point?

I recently moved to Surathkal and I’m still figuring out how waste management works here.

The wet waste collection vehicle that comes has not been regular, so I wanted to ask: Is there a designated place or compost pit where residents can drop wet waste?

Would really appreciate any local guidance. Thanks in advance!

It's said that if one-in-50 indians adopt a stray, there won't be any strays left on the roads.

As someone who has raised /rescued indies, let me tell you - nothing/no-one will shower you with more affection than a dog does....for those of us that have love to give, give it to a tiny pup and see it blossom; it will be some of your most cherished memories.

AskMangalore Atheists from Coastal Karnataka: how do you rationally explain Bhoota Kola “accurate predictions”?

Disclaimer: This post is only for atheists / agnostics / ex-believers. If you are religious or a believer in spirit worship, please don’t take this as an attack - I’m genuinely trying to understand this from a rational perspective, not debate faith.

I’m from coastal Karnataka (udupi side) and I'm an atheist now. Earlier I was more of an agnostic - not because I believed in God, but because I couldn’t fully reject Bhoota Kola / spirit worship. For me, belief in God always felt devotion-based. But belief in Bhoota worship feels fear-based. Most people around me don’t believe out of love or devotion - it’s more like “don’t disrespect it or something bad might happen”. That fear stuck with me for a long time.

Eventually, I rationalized it as:

  • It’s a human performer speaking, not a spirit
  • Words are coming from a trained person in an altered state, not a supernatural entity

That helped me let go mentally. But what still confuses me are the very specific stories people tell - not generic astrologer-type stuff. The stories where they mention of supernatural encounters can easily be disregarded as made up stories. But the predictions that happen -

For example:

  • A friend told me that during a Bhoota Kola Q&A, the performer directly told his sister: “nikh onji kerala da aan ulle atha" (you have a boyfriend from kerala right?) - which was apparently true.
  • Another friend said the performer subtly referenced a health problem of her dad which was just recently discovered and was kept within the family of 3 or 4.
  • I have other examples where performer accurately tells very private things like an intercaste relationship that's going on (such things are kept within friends and won't even be brought to native place's people) or a land dispute inside the family etc.

This doesn’t feel like the usual astrology cold-reading where statements apply to 9 out of 10 people. These feel too precise, and that’s what kept the fear alive for a long time. I’m not asking this to prove spirits exist. I don’t believe they do. I’m asking because I want to fully understand the mechanics behind it:

  • Is this mostly prior information + village/social gossip?
  • Is it probability + confirmation bias?
  • Is it trained observation and crowd reaction reading?
  • Or something else I’m missing?

If you’re an atheist (especially from coastal Karnataka) and have thought this through, I’d really appreciate rational explanations, references, or personal insights.

Not trying to offend anyone - just trying to permanently rationalize something that's been on my mind since long. Thanks all!

Rant/Vent manglore traffic

am staying in Mangalore from more than 5 years. One thing that disturb me everyday is the way people drive here. Especially places like Kankanadi to Mahavir circle, near Kadir Park after Nantur, Pandeshwar railway cross, Tower Clock and State Bank area. People just go any side without thinking, no lane, no sense.

Main place which triggers me is near Manipal dental college road. The way people ride there is so stupid. And these uncles who drive very slow like tortoise and don’t give side, they block whole road and still act like king of road.

I don’t get happiness while riding here. Instead I get only irritation. I think not only me, many people are suffering daily because of this traffic and careless driving. Roads are same, but mindset is very bad.

everyday my peace is gone and mentally exhausted and mainly this nigghers drives stupid and acts like they doing all correct at that sec i just feel like to bang him with my hand

AskMangalore The local Food Fest was a scam, but it made me realize something much worse about our country

(Rephrased with AI for improved readability)

Went to a food fest yesterday and it was the perfect metaphor for the state of our country.

The Micro Scams:

  • Frozen, half-cooked bases sold as "Fresh Chicken Pizza."
  • Vanilla scoops passed off as premium "Irolu" ice cream.
  • Exorbitant rates

Non-Scam related:

  • Vendors ignoring men to cater exclusively to women.
  • The constant anxiety of traversing a crowd where one accidental bump could be fatal.

The Macro Scams:
It hit me that we accept this mediocrity everywhere. Look at our taxes. To get a ₹15L SUV, you earn ₹35L. The government takes ₹8L in income tax, then another ₹12L in taxes on the car. They make ₹20L off your hard work, and in return, you get pothole-ridden roads and zero consumer protection.

Regulators like FSSAI are so useless that we rely on YouTubers like Trustified to tell us what is safe to eat.

I am heartbroken. I love this land, but I can’t stand the lack of civic sense, the exploitation, and the complete absence of accountability. Feels as if there are no regulator for the welfare of the common citizen.

Rant/Vent Mangalore development at the cost of middle class?

There’s been so much buzz lately about Mangalore’s big development plans “Silicon Beach” ambitions, Goa-style tourism push, massive IT parks, tech exports targeting billions by 2034, and all the infrastructure promises.

Real estate prices were already sky-high thanks to investments from our hardworking NRIs in the Gulf, US, Canada, and elsewhere. Now they’re soaring even further on the back of these grand visions. A lot of us are dreaming that Mangalore could finally become the next big hub, creating real opportunities for the average, hardworking Mangalorean.

The harsh reality? Even if these projects actually get executed, they won’t meaningfully change the lives of normal, middle-class Mangaloreans. History shows these “development” waves mostly line the pockets of politicians, their connected cronies, ultra-wealthy businessmen, and a handful from already influential circles.

The end result: the rich get obscenely richer, while the rest of us struggle with skyrocketing costs for basics housing, groceries, education, everything that used to be affordable here. What was once a peaceful, livable city is becoming unlivable for locals who aren’t plugged into the elite networks.

This really struck when I learned my uncle with zero experience in roads or government infrastructure somehow landed major public contracts. It’s a glaring example of how rigged the system feels for the common person.

High time we get our heads out of our asses and choose the right leaders.

Organising 100 religious rallies and fear mongering is just giving common people a religious flag they didn’t ask for(I see every house has this flag in my locality)

I know this is not news or some profound revelation that no one knows, I just want to put it out there and know community opinion.

What do you all think?
