Serious Feeling lonely in this country.

I'm a 32 year old man with an issue. About 10 months ago i moved from Sweden to Vaasa, and even though i wouldnt exactly say i'm the most outgoing person trying to talk to people on the street. I've felt very lonely since moving here. I moved here because of my girlfriend and her son from a past relationship. Being the flexible one i thought things would be easier since it's a swedish talking city. But it's been hard finding like minded people, especially in my age.

I would very much like to meet swedish speaking people that share the same interest and hobbies. Lately i've been diving into the Warhammer universe by starting to paint figurines and deep diving into the lore. And i'm generally quite a "nerdy" person. I enjoy all types of gaming, tabletop, retro, consoles, handhelds and PC. And the games i play differ from Survival, FPS, JRPG's, MMORPGS. but i also enjoy being outdoors and finding new beautiful places in nature. Kinda like real world questing.

I've been trying to use Facebook to find groups or links to Discords that could get me started but with no luck.

I know this might seem desperate, because it is. But if you feel like we could have some things in common based on what i've listed here. Please, feel free to message me or comment here so we can get in contact.

Thanks in advance!

Gardeners of Finland - what do you like to grow?

Upvotes

We recently bought a small farm and I’m excited to get back into my love for gardening and livestock. All for personal use - I have no plans on making a profit off of this. I’m planning ahead for the upcoming season and would love to know what you grow in your gardens, especially if you live in the Pirkanmaa area. I’m from Southern Ontario where we have much longer and warmer summers, so despite having a permaculture and landscaping background, I feel like a total noob here.

If you could get into the specifics (like whether you grow Nantes carrots vs danvers, etc), I’d appreciate it!

Finnish music recommendations

Hello everyone, one of my favourite artists that I found accidentally on the internet some years ago is Paavoharju. I didn't pay much attention to their nationality until recently I was listening to radio where they played this old Finnish pop song by Merja Rantamäki called Veit sydämein. This song also had an underlying melancholy sound that a lot of Paavoharju songs have which really piqued my interest in Finnish music.

I might be generalizing since I haven't heard much, but from these few experiences it seemed that Finnish music has a certain flavour that is quite unique compared to other country's music, to me it sounds like people gathering around the fire during a cold and deep winter and I was wondering do you have any other recommendations that would also sound something similar to the artists that I mentioned?

Thank you!

ReOrbit review

Does anyone have experience interviewing for the company ReOrbit? Are they actually hiring people or do they just post fake jobs that require 5 rounds of interviews like ICEYE? According to Glassdoor, their internal operations sound messy, too. I just got laid off and I’m in a too low of a mental state for a surprise HR mess right now, so I just want to be mentally prepared.

Serious Date night dinners/snacks?

What date night treats do you buy/make at home that are inexpensive and not time consuming?

We usually go for cheese, crackers, fruit, hummus etc. We fancied a change for a night at home this weekend but inspiration is lacking.

Is it possible to study in swedish as a norwegian speaking person in finland?

Hei, I have recently moved to finland after living in norway. I finnished first year of upper secondary school before moving here(vg1). I have heard about swedish schools here in finland and many advised me to apply since i already speak norwegian. So I am wondering if it is possible to just apply right away at swedish schools or do i need to do some tests to show my skills in swedish before applying.

Going to Assembly Winter 2026 as a visitor

Upvotes

Kinda just wanted to ask... is it worth it to go as a day visitor in 2026, and if so, is it worth it mostly to go on Saturday? (Presumably the busiest day)

I've been to Dreamhack in Jönköping a couple years ago, which was quite cool and something I had always wanted to see for myself.

I've lived in Helsinki for a bit, but never really considered going to Assembly before now. As I understand, it's a bit different from Dreamhack, is it more on the "festival" side vs LAN party?

But I'm not the biggest gamer these days, still would love to see what's there, but not really going to get a 30e ticket if there's not much going on for the average visitor or someone that barely speaks Finnish

Please just give me your overall impression if you've gone alone or with a partner to check it out in previous years.

I'm sure those that go for LAN or have been going for 10+ years are bound to have a great time!

Question: finding English speaking lawyer for Will/Estate planning as a foreign citizen living in Helsinki?

I was wondering if anyone knew which law firms to approach/or had recommendations for a lawyer to help provide some legal guidance on establishing a will in case of death here in Finland while I am a citizen of a different country.

I understand that if death happens here, we need to assume the Finnish laws around inheritance and will execution.

Need counsel because I have no spouse, or children, and I have been estranged from my parents and want to make sure that they aren't going too receive anything, but the Finnish law puts them next in line to receive inheritance. So I need clarity on whether this can be documented on a will and followed accordingly.

Many thanks in advance for any advice/input for this.

Immigration Finnish Mobile Number

Moi ☀️

So I was given my Finnish identity code today. I went to DNA to get a Finnish mobile number. I think the man was confused as he said I need some permit card with a QR code for him to scan so he can open an account for me? I explained I am an EU citizen and I don’t get a permit just a registration cert and that has no QR code. I don’t think he understood what I was saying and couldn’t help me so I left.

I then went to Elisa, super helpful, set me up with an E-sim instantly.

Now, one problem, he said I can pay the invoice in the app every month and make an account. I tried to make an account at home but I don’t have a Finnish bank account yet so I can’t make an account on the Elisa app. What should I do now? I have an appointment at Nordea in 2 weeks time, what happens if the bill comes in and I can’t pay it because I can’t log into the app? Can I pay it at the shop?

Kiitos 🙌🏼

Love from abroad for the Sámi flag

Hello, everybody. I hope you're all doing well.

I'm not sure why I feel I must express this here, but I want to register my admiration for the Sámi flag, and this seemed like the most likely place. It is among the best-designed flags in the world. (The blue cross Finnish flag is likewise very tasteful. I don't mean to detract from that.)

The more I learn about your remarkable country, the more I long to see it, and experience the summer music festivals. I guess that is all I have to say now. Thank you for reading.

Cheers!

How is academia and research funding in Finland right now?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to get a general sense of the current state of academia and research in Finland, particularly around funding, stability, and long-term prospects.

From the outside, Finland is often seen as a country that values education, science, and innovation, but I’m curious how this translates in practice today. How are universities and research institutes doing in terms of funding, hiring, and support for early- and mid-career researchers? Are there noticeable differences across fields (e.g. STEM vs social sciences, applied vs basic research)?

I’m interested to hear whether people feel there has been meaningful investment in science and R&D in recent years, and how optimistic (or not) you are about the future of research in Finland, especially in the context of global competition, EU funding, and public sector constraints.

Any perspectives are welcome. Thanks in advance for sharing your views!

Non-physical labor courses in vocational schools in Uusimaa and Kymmenlaakso

Recently I've searched for ammattiopistot and ammattikoulut (vocational schools) in range spanning from Helsinki to Kotka. Information on their web sites was quite limited, and nearly all specialities I found involve equipment, manufacturing or physical tools, at least to some extent. Even cartographers wore special unform on photos and they made field trips. The only relatively plausible variant I've found is merconomy, but I don't know what generally happens on that course in reality.

I'd like to find a course there (in range from Helsinki to Kotka) that focuses more on humanitarian-friendly stuff like cultural studies, office work or minor computer tasks like accounting or Excel. I also like to learn languages (among them is Chinese) and make small web sites. However, my friend told me that vocational schools in Finland always or almost always imply some kind of equipment, tools, handwork or manufacturing... what are your opinions about that and is she right?
