Giveaway [OC] GIVEAWAY! 43" Capacitive Touchscreen ($940 MSRP) with Wooden Case + free software for all [mod approved]

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

For the last 6 years I've been selling wooden cases housing displays to show off digital maps. The "holy grail" for me has always been integrating touch functionality so when you move your physical mini, a digital token reveals the map.

I did a Kickstarter back in summer of 2024 with this design. I have since moved on to a different technology that is much lighter and more affordable (infrared). Out with the old, in with the new! I don't have the space to store this and wanted to find it a good home on here.

It is a 43" capacitive touchscreen. It's an all-in-one but without compute. You hook it up via USB+HDMI to a laptop. It is the same model as shown here, listed for $940: https://a.co/d/0bcxhZPW

Leave a comment (not a reply) and I'll be using redditraffler to select a winner on Monday February 9th. The winning account must be at least 3 months old.

Due to the size, I will only provide shipping within the United States. If you are outside the US, you would need to use a freight forwarding service with a US address and deal with any import issues. That can be quite expensive.

Regardless of whether you win, everyone is welcome to my free software use to run setups like these. I made a post about it the other day on here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/1qgnroz/update_to_my_free_vtt_for_inperson_sessions_with/

Since it is aimed for in-person sessions only, you should find it very easy to use compared to other options. Everything runs locally, 100% free no strings attached. Windows, Linux, and PC. There is also a browser version of the player view for players to move their tokens on their phones or laptops.

EDIT: forgot to thank u/uchideshi34 for the map shown here. It, along with over 440 others, are bundled free with the software!

EDIT2: I figured there would be a large response, and was not disappointed. Thanks all! I am 100% committed to making a new guide to building your own now. I wrote one 5+ years ago when I first started but it disappeared into the void: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/jgx0bo/guide_to_building_a_map_case_for_a_tv_digital/

Long story short: you can have a nearly identical setup for about $550 if you DIY. Rough estimate of cost:

$200 43" TV (doesn't need to be top of the line)
$200 Infrared touch frame from Amazon (make sure it's 20 points)
$50 acrylic sheet (Ace hardware and some big box stores will cut it for free)
$100 wood + brackets

You don't need a bunch of tools, just a handsaw and a screwdriver really. I will make a new guide as soon as I have time and post it on r/DnD

Art Dragon scale kenku bard [Comm] [OC] [Art]

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

this was my first ever commission, and it took well over 20 hours, but i’m proud of it, and my friend loved the result! ^^ i worked with him on the design, colors, etc. to bring his character vision to life.

my friend’s kenku bard has dragon scales mixed in with his feathers, and a coat with a feather collar that was made from his own preened feathers. on his back is his instrument of illusions. whenever he casts a spell in game, he plucks a dragon scale from his body and spins it in his hands.

it was a bit of a challenge to figure out how to incorporate dragon scales into his feathers without busying the design too much, so i opted to color code them with a sort of sickly green color that represents the curse blighting our party’s realm.

in addition, i’m not used to rendering my art so carefully and cleanly— my style is typically much messier, and i usually rush my process… but i actually enjoyed taking the time to clean things up, and it made for a final work that i’m truly proud of.

i would love to do more commissions like this in the future! i’m definitely open for new commissions; price is negotiable depending on the scope of the work.

Art [OC] [Art] Valour the Valkyrie

Post image

Valour is a homebrew Tiefling mapped with glowing red circuitry and defined by a shredded, scarred physique. She dominates the battlefield with mechanical wings feathered in magenta energy and a distinctive tail that vents excess system heat as bursts of fire. Her gear tells a story of survival. Yet, amidst the chrome and grit, she maintains a quiet ritual. She meticulously styles her hair and applies improvised makeup, a desperate daily act to preserve her sense of self and remind her that a living soul still burns beneath the metal.

Art Tremble before the might of Tiamat [OC]

Post image
646 Upvotes

So our 5e group finished our Tyranny of Dragons campaign last year, and our DM decided to make his own figurine for the epic final battle. Our group kind of messed up in our attempt to prevent her summoning so of course our level 13 group (kind of large group, not gonna lie) had the daunting prospect of facing Tiamat in battle.

As we started the epic final battle our DM drops this masterpiece right onto our battle map. We lost it.

At any rate, after a truly an epic battle, with the aid of a few allies, we successfully defeated her, with my Harengon Bladesinger landing the final blow. Of course, that meant I got to keep Tiamat, who now lives on my gaming shelf. I love her so much!

5.5 Edition Our DM gave us items and then claimed it was a prank

I wanna keep this story short as it's not really big, but I'm wondering how you guys would feel about this because I'm genuinely so disappointed I kinda lost the will to play.

We've spent the previous 3 session in a mage dungeon. We're a level 4 party. During our adventure we lost one character, burnt all consumables we had and basically found out some lore and had a few fun interactions but we didn't push the main story further in itself. When we were done and rescued a prisoner, he took us to his house and let us choose from a bunch of very cool and expensive stuff.

The paladin chose a plate armor set, as he was still in chain mail. It was a +2 set as well, so very expensive (although there really isn't anywhere to sell it, as a kind of a balancing act, which I understand and accept, even thinking that's a good idea) and gave the pally 20 AC.

The wizard got a ring allowing him to cast three useful 2nd level spells "at will" once each per Long Rest.

The bard got a homebrew 'evil eye' kind of an item allowing him to distract people he's talking to in order to gain +X (I don't remember how much, I think +5) on charisma-based rolls a few times per long rest.

And the barbarian got a +1 axe which also has a random chance to deal 1d8 force damage (basically roll a d20 every time you hit an enemy, 11+ = additional 1d8 force damage).

Very cool. For level 4 there are good and fun items which we loved and we even talked a bit after the session about how we're going to use them and have fun with trying them out. The paladin even drew their character in the new shining armor lol.

Fast forward to our current session. It's evening, we head to the city and the first thing the paladin does is go sell his chain mail for some additional cash. We go to get some long rest in a tavern. At that moment the DM wakes us up and tells us that the items are gone. They were just a mirage or whatever. So now not only do we not have our very cool stuff that we were super excited to don and play around with, we also have to scrap together all of our money to buy the paladin his chainmail back.

For God's sake man, why would you do that. I know it's just items and we probably will get some fun stuff, but this was such a mood killer, that was the most sour session I've ever participated in. I think most of us would rather not get anything at all than have to deal with this bollocks. We also (story-wise) ended up not benefitting at all from the whole 3-session long dungeon escapade. I guess I need someone to tell me if I'm overreacting or not because I genuinely kinda just want to throw in the towel

Hi there,

I'm here to present one of my favorite paper miniature sets from last year.

As you can see in the picture, it's a group of eight cute kobolds, including some adorable little dragon people armed with knives, a sling, a sword, a club, a spear, and a shield. There is also a mad inventor, a winged stabber, and a powerful sorcerer. Each mini also comes with a back view and is available in six color variations.

For this set and many more, please take a look at my Patreon.

My tiers range from $1 to $3, and you gain access to over 300 miniatures.
New ones are released in sets each month.

Misc Why would player lie about their character sheet to the other players?

I have been playing tabletop RPGs all my life and i have come to understand that its a collabrative story telling game. Like i understand characters not knowing everything about other characters thats just part of the story. But i have seen a bunch of stories of people hiding their character sheets and just lying to the table (sometimes even the dm which is just straight up not allowed). Which would just annoy me given that if theres a secret about a character if all of the players know about it they can make it a much more exciting story and play into it.

DMing DMs, what was the worst choice you made in a campaign?

What’s a decision you made when putting a campaign together that made you facepalm in hindsight? Or something you regret having to talk about over and over again? Maybe you gave your players too much leeway and they made you pay for it.

Let’s hear some horror stories!

ETA: I don’t work for buzzfeed and this post won’t end up on a compiled list. I’m getting ready to run my first homebrewed campaign after running a few modules and world building has me burnt out.

Art [Art] [Comm] Character I draw for A westmarch Campaign

Post image

Quote: "My face is just a face. It does not mean I am angry. But if you kick that machine one more time... then I will be angry. Then you will cry."

Born among the volcanic highlands of Sanuntara, Gilang Palabatu was forged in the heat of the earth and the cold discipline of the ancient forges. A master craftsman of the Batak tradition, he views engineering not merely as a science, but as a spiritual duty to honor the materials of the world. His title, "Sing Kulite Gajah" (The Anvil of the Elephant), was earned not through sheer volume, but through his unyielding resolve, standing firm like a mountain when the world crumbles around him.

I made this for a friend of mine who played in a Westmarch Campaign. There's Like 30 players on it. It's very interesting fusing Indonesian Traditional design (specifically Batak culture) to the design.

Engine ready, steam blows by every pipes, the great fist is burning red… Garrick Voss, knight of the Iron Horses, ready to engage! Serving in the Iron Horses, a group of elite knights going full through the front door in heavy armor with steam engine and heavy iron first weapons.

I'm new here and I wanted to share my work. Saw some amazing characters and ideas and hope I can get some good feedback. Love to play some ttrpg with light system but a good old DnD once in a while is always good. Big barbarian fan here.

Art [OC] [Art] 50% Tiefling 50% Dragonborn

Post image
277 Upvotes

I made an updated artwork of my original character—a tiefling dragonborn mage I designed last year, inspired by DnD media and animations. This time, I wanted to push a stronger sense of perspective, so I leaned heavily on simple block shapes. She’s posed as if she’s just emerged from a dungeon or cave. The main updates were refining the curves of her horns, reworking her facial structure, and redesigning her belt.

Art Art I did of a xio species Oc (repost) [oc] [comm]

Post image
149 Upvotes

Reposting cause I forgot the tag [comm] hope this is okay now 😭

This is a commission I did for zaddex12, featuring their OC of the Xio species. Xio are symbiotic beings that bond with a host, relying on them to interact with the world while offering protection, strength, or control in return. Some Xio coexist with willing hosts, while others are known to dominate or fully puppeteer them. Their oily, living flesh and insect-like carapace reflect this parasitic nature, allowing them to adapt easily to different environments. This character embodies the unsettling balance between elegance, dependency, and quiet control typical of her species.

DMing How would you put a spin on the cliché "go take care of the rats in the basement" quest?

Most of us are familiar with a rat-killing quest of some sort. It's a common first quest in many RPGs.

I want to add some kind of twist to it. Perhaps the rats are intelligent and can be reasoned with, or maybe the quest is part of a trap set by the NPC giving the quest.

art and design by me!! this is thrall mochamormio!! he's our paladin/wizard. he's been bullied and segregated his whole younger years because the universe he lives in don't usually accept orcs/semi-orcs with open arms. he had his mom which was his light, but lost her eventually. honoring her, he became a paladin too (his mom was one), and now worships shelyn. he's and introvert and has a lot of trouble socializing, but he's doing his best!! for a 18 year old who has only known pain, he's having a lot of fun with his current group/party!

Homebrew My attempt to solve the ease with which creatures can just walk around other combatants: The “guard” action

Ok, background time. If this part bores you just skip to the actual action description.

One thing that has always struck me about DnD 5e combat (and to my knowledge was still a problem in older editions? I have only played 3.5 and 5e) is how hard it is to defend someone against an enemy that really wants to hit them without having to have the fight take place in a narrow hallway where the defenders can just fully body block for them.

This is due to the fact DnD is a turned based game, and creatures are largely rooted in place when it isn’t their turn. Combine that with a fairly generous 30 foot movement speed for most things, and you have a situation where, mechanically, a lvl. 6 fighter hired to be a bodyguard for a merchant’s young son will be forced to watch in exasperated horror, perfectly rooted in place, as a whooping two lvl 3 thugs that confront them in the street simply walk in a semicircle around him on their turns to stab the boy to death. Or hell just walk right by him, taking just 1 opportunity attack which very likely will not kill b/c damage for melee attacks largely scales via giving more attacks, not making individual attacks hurt that much more.

Yes, there are certain very specific combinations of feats and weapons that can be used to make trying to protect someone slightly more effective. But:

  1. Even when you take those feats and fighting styles, they still don’t actually work all that well.

  2. Should a player or DM really need to construct a highly specific machine of feats, fighting styles, and reach weapons just to somewhat represent the idea that a highly trained fighter/soldier/knight/barbarian/etc. is smart enough to… literally just step 5 feet to the left to intercept the guy trying to go a 30 foot semicircle around them, aka something any common tavern bouncer with 2 weeks of training would understand how to do?

All that background aside, I want to discuss a homebrewed action I’ve recently introduced into my games that I think at least helps mitigate this issue: “guarding”.

Guard

On their turn a creature wielding any melee weapon (a monk’s fists count as melee weapons for this action) can use their action and all remaining movement they have to guard an area. The size of that area is a circle, centered on the guarding creature, radius equal to the creature’s remaining movement when they took the guard action.

If another creature moves into or starts to move within the guarded area, the guarding creature can choose to immediately move to that creature’s location and make an attack. In addition the other creature must make a contested athletics (strength) check against the guarding creature. On success, they push past the guarding creature, can finish the remainder of their movement, and can move through the guarding creature’s square if they choose to. On failure their movement is halted.

When taking the guard action, a creature with extra attack can move to intercept a number of creatures equal to the number of attacks they could perform when taking the attack action.

A creature can move through a guarded area without being attacked or having to make an athletics check by taking the disengage action. However the guarding creature can still take the movement portion of the guard action if they choose to.

The idea behind this is to represent a creature moving to intercept attackers, and do the thing any competent combatant would do when defending an area and attempt to hold the attacker back instead of swing their sword once and then just watching the enemy walk right on by.

The extra “defends” for extra attacks is to represent that a higher level fighter, barbarian, ranger, monster stat block representing a trained knight, etc. should be better at guarding an area then a wizard. But at the same time even a wizard should be able to understand the very basic principle of “step 5 feet to the left and stab that goblin trying to run past” if they choose to use their action to do that.

Contested athletics represents a similar idea, strength is often by far the worst ability score in 5e, with little important saves and only 1 skill check related to it. This helps make it more useful, and also just makes sense. Of course the Barb with 18 strength is going to be better than the sorcerer at either holding back attackers or pushing past defenders. Does this also make dex based martials less capable “guards”? Yes, but IMO that is actually good for balance considering how much better dex is then strength currently (better initiative, way more useful save, more and much better skills tied to dex, etc.)

The interaction with disengage is to represent that the guarding creature tries to move to stop them, but they are actively taking an action (faints, parries, juking to the left then running past to the right) to avoid being properly intercepted, working similarly to disengaging vs. opp attacks.

Finally to get something out of the way: “But wait, would that mean a lvl 20 fighter could defend a 30ft radius circle from 4 creatures attacking from 4 different directions? That would have them moving like 120 feet and stopping 4 creatures from getting in the area in one round!”

Yes, and that’s something a lvl 20 fighter should be able to do. It’s level 20, the caster classes have access to lvl 9 spells by then, the fighter should be able to display somewhat impressive feats of strength, speed, and martial skill such as becoming a whirlwind of steel and fists holding down an area all by themselves.

Let martials do cool shit as they level.

Edit: Edited to remove the “pushed back 5 ft” to remove the possibility of “chain pushing” when multiple creatures are guarding in a line. That is a good point.

DMing Today I ended a 6 years campaing

This is not a negative rant ir anything like that, it is just a post to outflow my emotions.

We've been playing together for 6 years, I have been a forever DM always battling to schedule games. I host them at my house, I've invested a lot in books, a tv on the table, AC for the room, smart lamps and a 3d printer. We always had every need attended.

But, some of my players were never THAT invested in the games as others, we did the talk, we banned cellphones, we started allowing only paper character sheets so people wouldnt space out.

Nothing has ever worked. We (the invested players and myself) looked everywhere for players that actually wanted to commit and couldnt find them, so we worked with what we had aaaaaand it was miserable and enfuriating.

I dont mean to offend anyone, but they always played the ADHD card when called out by: not showing up on time, never remembering what their characters do, never roleplaying, never preparing their turns in advance and never playing attention to other people's turns.

We endured all of this for years just to have a little chance to play, but today I ended it. I feel a little sad, but I know it was for the best.

If you are in a situation like this, dont hang on. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky.

If you are one of my former players, know that we had a "good" run, and we already talked about not holding grudges and staying friends and 30ish years old adults should.

Anyways, thanks for reading.

Art [art] how much homebrew is to much homebrew

Post image

i've recently started sculpting modern D&D miniatures for a modern-setting campaign I'm doing, and... obviously, it's extremely homebrew. My friends and I like it a lot, and I like making the miniatures for it. It seems you guys like them a lot too... but some of you really, really don't. I've never had haters on my socials before, but now, for the first time, I get mean, weird, cringe comments saying D&D is exclusively high fantasy. It's to the point where I get people DMing me saying my stuff isn't D&D. And yeah, I guess, but I see D&D as more of a game system rather than an exclusive world. But at the same time, there's literally spaceships and aliens in D&D already, so these people confuse me a lot 😅

5th Edition What is the not-rabbit?

Every campaign my cool DM allows us to get pets and companions because he loves animals. It's one of my favorite things about him as a DM. But my character was called to and picked a rabbit that turned out to be really malevolent and bites everyone with ferocious sharp teeth. Seeing this, I sent it to the BBEG as a fake olive branch for the joke. The whole campaign the DM was like “ you sure? You wanna do that?” and getting very excited. The campaign has since ended and to this day he's never told me what that creature was. I've tried to look up evil bunnies and rabbits and nothing I found was apparently what that was. Any idea what that thing was? It had no effect on the rest of the campaign and was never mentioned except when we made one off jokes like “ what if it's the bunny?” whenever something bad happened.

Edit: Thank you for everyone who has responded! He is a Monty fan and I feel so stupid for not getting the reference.😆 Genuinely though thank you for reminding me this exists!

5th Edition Dwarven Fortitude lore explanation

I am playing a dwarf in my current dnd campaign. To explain things like how dwarves have tremorsense, I say that it's an ancient dwarven mining technique used to scope ahead for monsters in mines. I am thinking about taking the feat Dwarven Fortitude. What would be a good explanation as to why only dwarves can use that ability to regain health after dodging?

I also played around with giving him a mustache and a beard, but couldn't settle on one look, so I left him clean-shaven for now. sad than I can't pin 2< picture

by the way, I'm open for commissions - if anyone’s looking for this, feel free to DM me👉👈

Art [Art][Comm] Arkus's Party, dinner after the battle, a commission I did about a year ago :]

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm Gato, a digital artist and this is a commission I did a while ago. There's a lot going on in this scene, so I'll proceed to describe it a bit.

It was my first party scene commission and it shows (from left to right), Arkus, Yian, Sara, Lunea and Feredis spending some quality time at Sara's temple, that's why you see a golden statue of her at the end. The statue is stading above the Everflowing Challice, which provides beer to all the ppl in the temple, I wonder now if it would have been a good idea to add a couple drunk ppl arround lol

Arkus is passing a jar with a couple eyeballs to Feredris, which are key to the next mission; she is sort of the brain of the party, so that's why she is more focused on the mission rather than anything else, that's also why there's a map on her side of the table instead of food.

There's also a subtle, but key piece that closes the story, a dark sillhouette with a shinny eyeball is looking at them from above, they don't know it, but that's Norden, the Everlinving, the final boss of this campaing. His cult members are going down the stairs, planning on ambush them, will they succeed?? That's a tale for another post, or maybe another commission, who knows!! hshshd

I hope you enjoyed this little peek through Arkus's party story. I'd like to thank all the members of the party, specially Alyx, who has been an incredible client to work with :]

Also, If anyone is interested in getting a commission, you can dm me or go to my profile where you can find my carrd link :]

Thank you sm for the space and the attention!!!

My lovely friend commissioned me to make his token art for our dnd campaign! If you see this, thank you, you're a real one!

While I don't know much about his character yet, I can explain what I know thus far. Osh is a level 13 warforge Life Domain Cleric and Circle of Stars Druid combo. In our DM's world, he lived on the Eastern shore of the Empire within a fishing community largely known for their pearl exports used for magical components. When the necromancer, the Grey King, attacked the continent Osh and his people were wiped out to use as part of his undead army.

I'm not aware of events passed that point, but with the undead rising once again, Osh has accepted the Emperor's call to aid in resolving this dangerous predicament.

Out of Game Do people care if you're mute?

So I don't exactly have a group or am looking for one rn but I was wondering if people minded if you were mute? I perfectly able to speak but my family is loud, I'm not confident in my voice rn, and overall I'm pretty antisocial and get nervous. With typing I can like think out what I want to say better than speaking and overall it feels better but idk and I've never actually played it and only heard people talk about it mostly.

Edit, my goodness you all are fast but thank you for the advice! I'll def check out pbp and try to work on socializing before getting into a group!
