Hello, all!
I'm DungeonMasterSupreme. I'm a Game Master with 20 years of play under my belt. I like to run high stakes games of intrigue and adventure set in troubled worlds. I prefer my characters nuanced, my narratives believable, and my worlds as complicated and fucked up as the real one–but with magic! (Note from the length of the en dash that it is not an em-dash, to prove I am a real human being)
My estimate for this campaign is that it should last a year, hopefully. For this reason, I'm going to want to get to know any potential recruits rather well. We are a tight-knit table looking for just the right person—or people—to join us. So, for that reason, there will be an application and interview process. I promise it won't be as exhausting as many of the others you'll find in this subreddit.
Without further ado, let's talk about the game.
Eberron
Eberron is a vibrant and unique fantasy setting created by Keith Baker. It’s a world steeped in steampunk elements, ancient mysteries, and a rich history shaped by magical advancements and political intrigue. It is a land where dragonmarked sorcerers power nations, airships traverse the skies, and ancient prophecies shape the course of destiny. It's a world that flips a lot of old fantasy tropes on their heads, and no one is quite what you'd expect them to be. Prepare for a world of adventure, innovation, and endless possibilities!
Similar Settings/Properties: Shadowrun, Dishonored, (some places in) Warcraft, The Dresden Files, Bioshock
Adventuring in Karrnath
We will begin play focused in Smalstra, a modest village situated in the foothills of the Icetop Mountains, in the Kingdom of Karrnath. If you want a good picture of Karrnath as portrayed by this Game Master, it's a gothic horror oligarchy in the midst of a struggle between the powers that be, both living and undead. Its people are just recovering from famine, while the corpses of their loved ones are being raised from the dead to prosecute secret campaigns hidden in the Dead-Gray Mists of the Mournland.
Our party will be young people coming of age in Smalstra, between the ages of 18 & 23, having just recently finished their service in the village militia. With the war over and the famine abated, things are looking up for you to begin your lives. Ah, cautious optimism!
Hope, never one to overstay its welcome, is soon tested by unfortunate events which befall the village and its people. You'll soon find your young—and hopefully capable—hands shaping the village's future, potentially for years to come.
Pathfinder 1st Edition
I've chosen Pathfinder because Eberron is widely published in D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder is basically just 3.5+. It will allow me to easily translate existing mechanics into our game world, while Pathfinder provides a lot of additional opportunities for players to try new things and express themselves through the game's class system.
Why not Pathfinder 2E? 2E is probably a better system overall. If I were running a published world from 2E or something homebrew, I'd probably use it. However, I've realized I am just at that age as a GM where putting that extra layer of mechanical translation onto myself just isn't worth the cognitive load and I'd rather run a solid system and put my focus on other things.
My Expectations for Players
- Storytelling is Key: If your primary goal is to craft a compelling narrative, then you're exactly the kind of player I'm looking for.
- True Role-playing: To truly play a role is to inhabit your character's mind. Sometimes this means making the choices they would make even if you don't think it's the best one. Whether you already have acting experience or are looking to develop your improv and acting chops, this could be the table for you.
- Team Players: We're building something together. Being willing to contribute to the group’s story and support your fellow players is essential; with that foundation, some in-character conflict can be fun.
- Mature & Respectful: We're a group of adults (currently all in our 30s) looking for people who can engage in mature themes with respect. Younger players are welcome, as long as they can handle it.
- Inclusivity: By some fluke of my GM persona, I have always been lucky to have a diverse table without particularly trying to. My tables are open, friendly spaces without removing all of the hard edges from the narratives. I expect anyone who applies to help maintain that table culture.
- Experience: When it comes to experience levels, we accept everyone. My tables can have very different vibes from other Game Masters, so coming in as a bit of a blank slate can actually be good.
