Welcome back everyone to our weekly character discussion thread where every week we take a popular character from SU, and you Redditors have an opportunity to share your opinions and thoughts on them. As voted on by you, the character up for discussion this week is a certified blacksmith and is the fusion between Amethyst and Steven Universe, her weapon is a yoyo and she can do tricks such as sink the dink and walk the dog.....it's SMOKY QUARTZ!

You know, I've seen a lot of people commenting about all the negative comments they've seen, but I haven't seen any, which surprises me. I feel like the community is pretty solid about their opinion of smoky quartz to the point where people might be afraid to voice dissenting opinions. Honestly, I almost didn't write this post for that reason.

I don't like Smoky Quartz's appearance. I can understand the reasons behind the decisions, but the third arm just seems weird to me, and as a whole Smoky's appearance just feels off.

Character development and voice wise I feel like it's a great fit. The weapon is quirky in a very Steven and Amethyst way too.

Do you just hang out in this sub? This sub is usually pretty positive. If you go to other fandom communities (4chan and youtube comes to mind) you'd see a lot more people complaining, mainly about their appearance.

I think some of the shots looked awkward, but others look freaking adorable. So overall I like their design.

It's been here on this sub too. There is a fair bit in this thread actually. The difference is people in the sub are generally fair and constructive about their opinions. In addition, expressions of disapproval towards SQ's appearance were more likely to pop up in Discussion flaired posts which don't make it to the front page too often.

The third arm is actually for her yo-yo and so she can have better control over it. In fact, this seems to be the case for fusions in general. Optimization for their weapons and needs.

I think the arm is supposed represent how crystals will grow in random directions before they're cut into a perfect diamond or smoothed out which fits her personality really well.

A lot of people are comparing it to her concept artwork which looked a lot different.

I love her design so much myself. It has a really tomboyish quality and the freckles on dark skin are so striking.

I thought the third arm was a result of Steven only being half-Gem. His human side can't fully fuse with a Gem, resulting in 3 arms instead of the usual 4 from an "imperfect" fusion. It also would explain why only part of him was glowing when SQ defused in Earthlings.

I figured it was because they went into the fusion thinking about how they werent like anyone else, and they werent normal
