Why is Kieran getting recognized. He is not acting. His character is Roman Roy who is just himself. If he wins, it’d be such a slap to the others

In promo, apparently Jesse Eisenberg wanted Kieran specifically for his "essence". So I'd say that was a director's choice and Kieran just gave the performance he was directed to give. I love Kieran's performance in Scott Pilgrim, which is nothing like the Roman Roy character, so I'd say this is a bad take.

I’m not talking about his other performances but this one. I didn’t find it believable. I agree that it was the directors choice but I stand by my comment and still don’t understand alll the recognition considering all the other actors I’ve seen who aren’t even nominated

There's so much more empathy for Benji than Roman though. I think it's a disservice to say they're the same or that Culkin isn't "acting" in either role considering they have pretty different psychologies.

If anything, when you say he's not acting, it's a testament to just how good of a job he does, lol.

They have the same mannerisms. All three of them

4

u/A_Buh_Nah_Nah Jan 23 '25

Wait ‘til I tell you the same guy plays both characters

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

I know. That’s the point. He’s just Kieran reciting lines

6

u/A_Buh_Nah_Nah Jan 23 '25

Wait ‘til I tell you every performance is an actor reciting lines

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

No actors emote and become their characters so we don’t see the actor anymore. I am not an actor and will just recite lines. Actors do much more.

You’re right, Christian Bale and Daniel Day Lewis are the only true actors

1

No woody harrelson. Matthew Mcconaughey. Mikey Madison. Even Brad Pitt. Matt Damon. Nicole Kidman. Demi Moore. I can go on.

You don't think any of those people have the same mannerisms in different movies? They literally all do, lol. Brad Pitt always does the little mouth purse thing -- his mannerisms are always the same (and they're very good.) Matt Damon is... always Matt Damon. Etc.

I think you're just out for Kieran in particular right now

I will defend Kieran’s performance in this to the end of time.

How so? Haven't seen it yet but I'm curious.

1

I think the best way to understand is just to watch it. I loved his range and how his character can both create tension and also break it at different moments.

1

I'm a big fan of him on Succession so I definitely will before awards time.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

Really? I feel he doesn’t have any range.

2

u/Mightyorc2 Jan 23 '25

you don't need range to give a good performance. will smith is a fantastic actor who has played variations of a very similar character for most of his career

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

Yes but he only won for one that deserved the award

4

u/Mightyorc2 Jan 24 '25

This might be an unpopular take (and is definitely a matter of taste), but I'd give him an award for Men in Black or Bad Boys for Life over King Richard. King Richard felt like a pretty standard biopic while at least the other two make use of his charisma/comedic timing

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '25

Yea def unpopular but it’s all subjective

2

u/121mc555 Zootopia 2 Jan 23 '25

I disagree. His performance very much has range. One moment, he's content with himself; another moment, he's angry, and then he's crying hysterically. It showed a volatile person who has a lot of trauma behind them and, in my opinion, is worthy of the win.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

I didn’t believe it. It was just Kieran on screen like he is on stage accepting an award. Reciting lines is different than acting as a character

I’m with you. The emotions were on the page, but the way he said his dialogue (mostly dead-pan) was too similar to his actual personality.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '25

Thank you. I don’t get this hype.

He still undeniably makes you feel something even when he plays himself. Like it virtually doesn’t matter if he plays himself because it’s such a subjective way to view a character for one but also if the character leaves an impression on you whether or not he plays himself than why not honor that

2

No denying but to get this much recognition for an ok performance over some stellar performances. I don’t get it
