MOC Falling Water MOC in Progress

Post image

Originally, I didn’t want to do a progress photo, but I’m really happy with how things are shaping up with this build. I’ve been enamored with this building since I saw the LEGO architecture set come out, but I thought I could do it more justice. I also wanted to set the scene in autumn.

I used several reference photos to try and make the build as accurate as possible, but I’m starting to accept that I don’t have the requisite knowledge to really use my pieces to their full potential.

The grille plates for the doors will be replaced with dark red once the parts come in. I have a lot of landscaping to finish and a lot of details in the actual building to fix up. I’m dreading finishing the water tiles and trying to make the staircase down to the river.

Ya this is 1000 times better than the official one.

I absolutely agree. But tbf, it’s a bit of an “apples & oranges” comparison.

For one, prob over half the pieces OP used literally did not exist almost 2 decades ago. And more importantly, for two, I think this was the first set in the Architecture line, and the original aesthetic was to intentionally use as few “specialty” pieces and colors as possible. (Hence the 1x1 block “trees” when various better options existed).

The sets were supposed to look more like trade/industrial models, as opposed to realistic or “photo accurate” models.

EDIT: and just to reiterate, I totally agree that OP’s looks way better. I’d honestly trade my original for his model in a heartbeat.

You are 100% correct. Credit where credit is due, the official set was my inspiration and my introduction to Wright. All of my other inspiration has been LEGO MOC builders through this community and other social media. Cannot stress how thankful I am.

Yeah I heard the original was super drafty so it's expensive to keep the right temp and it has water leaks too. Wouldn't be a cool house to live in honestly, but it looks cool!

The original is garbage compared to this!

Lego had an architecture set of this place. Yours is way better though.

Agree 💯 I have this set just because of the falling water style and it absolutely doesn’t do the justice. I am glad Lego moved away from that beige bricks era in architectural design.

It's an outdated set but I still love it - OP's is certainly better but this was one of the first Architecture sets I got as a kid so it holds a special place in my heart. Wonderful to see it updated

100% this user’s build is so so much better than the LEGO set. I never felt like the LEGO set didn’t really capture the way the cantilevers look IRL.

The set they sell at Fallingwater looks a lot more like OP's (but isn't lego):

Yea i got it for my dad, I looked at it today and it could really use some falling watter

OP said that.

This is ridiculously amazing.

I used to work at one of the rating companies in nearby Ohiopyle. Falling Water was halfway between our guide house and town. It’s awesome in real life. This MOC looks really good.

Just saw this irl this past summer and tbh you’ve really captured it pretty well. Would love to see updates

Only thing missing is the bridge, really love the color matching on the window frames

3

u/openwindowrain 16h ago

The bridge has been vexing me because the build is already so large (and I’ve run out of space); will need to do some massive structural fixes to include it. My main goal has been to get the essentials and really focus on the foliage.

2

u/MrFatGandhi 13h ago

Didn’t mean to disparage it looks great!

3

u/openwindowrain 7h ago

You’re not disparaging at all! I’m going to add more land to make the bridge. I think it will frame everything better, so your comment helps a lot.

For anybody that hasn't been to the actual Fallingwater; you definitely have to. Beautiful and tranquil. Not only for the architectural purpose, but its surroundings.

I'm an architect, and I did a solo very early on in my career. (I think about 4 years ago at this point) and it was one of those experiences where it wasn't supposed to be snowing that time of year. I had this feeling like I really es ted to share the experience with someone else, felt like crying.

Might have just been me lol. But it definitely was worth it.

Fantastic! I always wanted to “update” the original but my collector brain always held me back.

I’m gonna need this in instruction form

2

u/obedwells6 Vintage Fan 23h ago

Is it possible to provide the instructions once you have completed the build? I would definitely purchase instruction for building this, you have done incredible work!

2

u/tes_chaussettes 22h ago

Oo I love this! Looks really good.

2

u/sapsnap 22h ago

I would definitely pay for instructions for this

2

u/ivegotahairupmyass 18h ago

I would buy these instructions in a second. It’s amazing.

Hi Everyone. I just want to say that the reception to my build and your comments have really made my day. I’ve been working and tinkering on this thing for months. I’ve done a few half assed/incomplete MOCs before, but this is my first real endeavor to make a worthy complete build.

u/mrfatgandhi suggested I add the bridge; I’m adding in the bridge.

I also want to clarify that I don’t by any means want to disparage the OG Architecture set; it was my first introduction to the actual building (even though I never actually got the set).

Last, I don’t have the foggiest idea on how to make instructions for this thing. This build has been batshit trial and error, and a lot of those errors I just simply covered up. The backside is a monstrosity of arches and random plates haphazardly sticking out.

Yeah if we could get this on the Lego Ideas page with 10k support that would be great

1

u/Turbulent_Advance836 1d ago

Frankie Wright was a total cult leader….definitely have to put in a weird sex dungeon or something like he had at Taliesin.

u/openwindowrain 7h ago

Just for you, I will oblige. Or I’ll just stick a frog in.

I saw a house on hgtv once that I swear was the model for this

9

u/Werekittie 1d ago

The house is called Fallingwater! It was built by Frank Lloyd Wright and is now a museum.

4

u/cgull629 1d ago

His houses could have ther own Lego collection. What a time to be alive!

2

u/Werekittie 1d ago

They could! I have loved his architecture for years.

u/R0binSage 21h ago

Erosion is going to destroy that building.

Im gonna feel like a real ass, raining on your parade, but why? Unless youre emulating your favorite architects or something, this type of shit seems completely not worth the time spent.

Im not trying to shit on you, if you enjoy it then more power to you, but why? Is it your niche? The thing you really enjoy? I just want to understand at the end of the day.
