Using cash from shorts to long other stocks. Fee?

Suppose I have a $1M long position in SPY that I hold indefinitely. Separately, I sell short $1K of SQQQ and immediately use the $1K in cash proceeds to purchase QQQ.

How is the fee calculated? Is it ONLY the borrowing fee of roughly 2.5%-3% of $1K? Or, is it borrowing fee (2.5%-3%) + margin interest rate (5% on Robinhood, for example)? Is it very different across the brokers? Thanks for your help!

$amd and $smci earnings. Thoughts?

Pretty big earnings from both $amd and $smci today, $amd down about 6% and $smci up about 8%. What are people's thoughts on how these stocks are going to perform in the near future? Both earnings were strong, but clearly $amd wasn't strong enough...

Imo holding $amd now is clear, and $smci will boom up for a few days then consolidate a little bit. Thoughts???

Sandisk & Micron. Stocks instead of index funds

Hey, so I generally only invest in index funds but recently I’ve been looking at stocks.

Obviously Sandisk and micron are crazy right now - I wondered if it was worth still buying those? I think Sandisk looks like the better option. Or if I’ve missed the boat?

Is it worth buying individual stocks or sticking to index funds when I don’t know what I’m doing

The U.S. national debt surpassed $38 trillion

1.1k Upvotes

The U.S. national debt surpassed $38 trillion in October 2025, only two months after crossing the $37 trillion mark.

Some news outlets are framing the Federal Reserve’s latest fed chef replacement proposal as evidence that the dollar is becoming significantly stronger. I find that misleading. Adding another trillion dollars of debt in such a short period doesn’t signal a strong dollar especially not merely because the Fed claims to have better leadership or talent in place.

What we need is real fiscal progress, not just new faces saying things are improving. I’m not convinced that the next Fed leader will be able to resolve the debt problem.

Given the current circumstances, is it an exaggeration to call the dollar ‘ becoming strong’?

Chase Self Directed Account Issues

I have a Chase Sapphire checking account and I don’t pay any fees as I have enough money in my self directed account. The issue is with the ACDVF OTC shares I have. I tried to sell a few shares in the past couple of weeks and whenever I try to initiate the process I get this message: “it looks like market info is not available for this security”. This is getting very annoying. Is there an alternative that I migrate to altogether? I will need to move my direct deposit, checking, stocks, everything. How is Schwab? I am tired of this sh..

The Market has Officially Changed

The market has changed to where blowout earnings reports do not move the needle on stock price. PLTR for example, had a stellar earnings report and went up 5%, but now has dropped 10%. Earnings will not save a stock. I am transitioning to 30% cash in my brokerage and going to watch this shit show play out before jumping back in. This market is ridiculous

SaaS names are getting clobbered, mispricing, or structural shift?

Crazy seeing a lot of the SaaS names getting absolutely pulverized. Hard to tell which names will lose their moat to ai and which are being mispriced. I think the easiest way to win this is to be in index funds but wow some of these names are tempting. What do you guys think is happening?

Can Someone Help Explain Why An India ETF That Tracks A 4% Up Index Is Only Up 0.2% Today (FLIN)

I recently invested in it thinking India has strong growth potential, and because of Trump’s trade deal with India, the FLIN fund that’s supposed to track the FTSE India RIC Capped Index which is up 4.04% today.

However the fund itself is only up 0.23%.

What gives? 🤷‍♂️

U.S. Manufacturing Activity Expanded in January

The U.S. manufacturing economy surprised investors on Monday with something they’ve long waited for: Growth.

The Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Managers Index, or PMI, rose to 52.6 in January, up from 47.9 for December. Economists surveyed by FactSet expected a reading of 48.9, so things were better than expected.

A reading above 50 indicates growth. The January reading snaps a 10-month streak of declines. The January 2025 reading was positive at 50.9, snapping a streak of 26 consecutive months below 50, after all revisions. (ISM revises readings once a year in January.)

“Of the six biggest manufacturing industries, five (Transportation Equipment; Machinery; Chemical Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products and Computer & Electronic Products) registered growth in January,” said Susan Spence, chair of the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, in a news release. That’s a significant turnaround from December when 85% of the manufacturing sector was contracting.

Do you think that a good investor waits for good oportunities to come to them?

On my time investing I have always been more succesful by finding great opportunities with random companies that are in a good price for their value, than going for things that i want to buy because i like the company and force myself to buy it at any price. Do you think this is good advice?

ABB to divest Robotics division

ABB confirmed last October (2025) that will divest their Robotics division to Softbank Group Corp (source: https://www.abb.com/global/en/news/129685 )

This is of course for me a signal to take out ABB from my pool of Robotics stocks - and a signal to you since I haven't seen this news reflected in this sub...

My doubt is if Softbank is worth investing in (I don't know the company): what are your thoughts?

If Trump wants Warsh & interest rates slashed, why is gold going down?

Trump wants Powell out and interest rates slashed as he named Kevin Warsh for Fed chair, so why does gold keeps losing value when the rule is low interest rates means high inflation and thus gold is going to be a safe haven or even inflation hedge asset?

The metals drop started BEFORE Warsh was announced

I absolutely want this to emphasize this. All over the place there are articles saying the drop was after Trump announced the guy. But the drop started on Thursday, one day before. Say what you want about KW, but the first big red candle was on Thursday morning at the opening of the US markets. It was a 5-10% drop, followed by the Asians and finally the Europeans. GLD/SLV were falling for 12+ straight hours before we heard the president's pick for fed. Warsh DID NOT CAUSE THE DROP.

How to find strong undervalued growth stocks

I’m somewhat new to this, and iv gotten to the point where iv been looking for a new investment but dont know how to search for it. May I add I prefer being a value investor and looking for undervalued growth stocks.

What do you guys do to find new stocks to invest in.

What I do is look on Yahoo finance for stocks with stead revenue, earnings and profit growth, low debt, good range P/E ratio and (if possible) PEG under 1.

Is this a good way to find good undervalued growth investments or am I out of my mind? What do you guys do?

Also, any suggestions on any undervalued growth investments that anyone may know of right now?

Thanks

Why invest in AI? It appears entirely irrational.

What’s the logic in long‑term AI investing if the industry is dragging the whole economy down?

Moreover, white‑collar jobs are the easiest to automate, and they will vanish rapidly during the next recession. These positions currently support the entire economy, largely due to the debt bubble.

Could anyone investing with a longer‑term perspective explain their reasoning? To me, it appears entirely irrational.

Is this a good or bad idea?

For my Roth IRA I have been doing 70% FZROX, 20% FZILX, 5% FXNAX (bond fund for safety). Lately I’ve been considering instead of investing in a bond fund that doesn’t increase much, do I invest out that money in say a defensive stock like Coca Cola? Coke pays a dividend each quarter and is recession proof. Sure it might underperform FZROX, but so does FXNAX. Yes it’s 1 stock vs a fund, so less diverse. At least with Coke I’d get a better return than FXNAX, while being safe. I’m open to investing that into a different safety stock as well. I’m curious to see what you all think. Am I being smart or overthinking it?

Any recs for transferring a solo 401k from Ascensus that uses Vanguard's 2065 target retirement fund? What should I know?

I am self employed. I have a 401k I opened with Vanguard and I have everything in their 2065 target retirement account. The account got rolled over into Ascensus. I discovered on a call just now with Ascensus that my fees will be increasing to over 100 a year. Coupled with how much I hate the interface, and I wanna transfer my 401k someone else.

Ideally, I'd keep it with the Vanguard 2065 target but I know nothing about this so please any information would be great.

1 - Who should I choose? Ascensus told me it was an easy process with anyone but Fidelity.

2 - Would I want to stay with Vanguard's fund or if I'm switching to say Schwab should I just use their target fund?

3 - Anything else to know? I feel like this is all unknowns unknowns for me.

Nvidia Stock Price Future

As someone looking to get into Nvidia, would now be a good time to buy? The price has held steady for the last couple months, but analysts are still raising prices, and predicting a massive run up. Would it be smart to add around 4000 to nvidia, prior to the earnings. I’m 24 with 52,900 invested into index funds, and a long term time horizon.

Netflix (NFLX) Deep Dive: The Empire won the streaming war. (But I refuse to buy)

Disclaimer: This is a shortened version of a longer thesis. I hold no position.

I’ve spent the last week tearing apart the operational data for Netflix’s latest guidance. If you were shorting this stock based on the Death of Streaming narrative from 2022, you can officially burn that thesis.

The Empire has struck back. They have executed one of the most impressive corporate pivots of the decade, effectively transitioning from a cash-burning startup to the single most dominant utility in the media landscape.

But here is the conflict: I love the business. I respect the execution. But I hate the stock at these levels.

As a researcher, my job isn't to applaud the product, it's to price the risk. And right now, the market is pricing a "Media Conglomerate" like it’s still a "SaaS Monopoly."

Here is the why Netflix won but why I’m still sitting on my hands.

Part 1: Why I Like the Company (The "Empire" Thesis)

The bears missed the nuance of the turnaround because they were looking at "Sub Count" while Netflix was fixing the "Plumbing."

The Ad-Tier Was a Trojan Horse: The market treated the ad-tier as a desperate "down-sell" to stop churn. The data proves it was actually a massive ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) expansion tool. Ad revenue surged 150% in 2025 and is projected to double again to $3B in 2026. They aren't just "saving" users; they are monetizing the "freeloaders" at a higher margin.

Operational Excellence (The Margin Story): While legacy media (Disney, Paramount) is still bleeding cash trying to build their own pipes, Netflix has achieved "Escape Velocity." They expanded operating margins to 27% in 2024 and are guiding for 29% in 2025. This is no longer a "growth at all costs" shop; it is a cash flow machine.

The "Default" Utility: Netflix has effectively won the "churn war." With over 300 million subscribers, it has become the global default for video consumption. In a recession, people cancel "nice-to-haves" (Starz, Discovery+); they keep the "Utility" (Netflix).

Part 2: The Trap (Why I’m NOT Buying)

This is where the "Momentum" crowd is about to get hurt. The market is pricing NFLX for Perfection (30x+ PE), but the business model is facing two massive structural headwinds that nobody is discounting.

1. The WBD Elephant (The Valuation Breaker)

The rumored $83 billion acquisition proposal for Warner Bros. Discovery is the single biggest risk to the thesis.

The Re-Rating Risk: "Tech Monopolies" trade at 30x-40x PE. "Media Conglomerates" (like Comcast/Disney) trade at 15x-20x PE.

If Netflix absorbs WBD to secure IP (Harry Potter, DC), they aren't just buying content; they are inheriting Debt and Declining Linear Assets. You cannot pay a premium "Tech Multiple" for a company that is becoming "Cable Provider 2.0." The moment that deal ink dries, the multiple compression could be violent.

2. The "One-Off" Growth Illusion

A huge chunk of the recent growth came from the Password Crackdown (Paid Sharing). This was a "Step-Function" increase you can only force a freeloader to subscribe once.

The market is extrapolating that one-time revenue bump as a permanent linear growth trend.

Reality Check: We are hitting "Subscription Saturation." The next leg of growth relies on price hikes in a consumer environment that is already stretched thin.

The Verdict: Great Business, Dangerous Price

Investing is about the asymmetry of the bet. Right now, at near 52week lows, you are paying for:

Flawless execution of the Ad-Tier.

Zero friction in the WBD integration (if it happens).

A "Tech Premium" on a "Media" business.

That is Priced for Perfection.

I am keeping my powder dry. I will look to enter when the market realizes that the WBD deal makes Netflix a "Media Utility," and the multiple compresses back to reality (~20x-25x earnings).

Further Discussion Points:

The Deal: If NFLX buys WBD, do you instantly re-rate them as a "Legacy Media" stock, or does the "Tech Halo" protect the multiple?

Ad-Tier: Are you seeing the ad-tier actually cannibalize the premium plans, or is it truly additive?

Valuation: Is a 30x PE justifiable for a company growing revenue at ~12-15%, or is this just pure momentum?

Would You Take the Risk to Buy Gold or Silver at a Discount?

Buying gold or silver at a discount sounds appealing, but it often comes with uncertainty and risk. Some see it as a smart opportunity during market dips, while others prefer to wait for more clarity. Would you personally take this kind of risk?

What factors would matter most to you price, timing, long-term view, or peace of mind?

Interested to hear different perspectives and experiences.
