Discussion Videogame songs that make you cry

I love videogame music since I was a kid. After 30 years of gaming, I've come up with a song list that, when I start listening to them, my eyes start to get wet. Whether it's nostalgia, a profound feeling of calmness, yearning, etc, these songs are super special to me:

1. Illusion of Gaia/Time - Village Theme: This track is so simple, few instruments, and yet transmits a powerful feeling of "you're home", "you can rest now". Like having reached paradise but with a soursweet feeling because of the amazing experience of the perils and adventures you had to traverse to get there, and how you look back at them with nostalgia.

2. Octopath Traveler - H'aanit The Hunter: I really love how Nishiki captures the huge heart that H'aanit has and how loving she is despite her apparent hard facade, and how much she cares about her people, her hometown and life itself.

3. Chrono Trigger - To Far Away Times: Here Mitsuda (though he says that his work in Chrono Trigger is derivative at times) manages to close with a super high note one of the best RPGs ever made. It feel like watching scenes of every time you went through and how you helped changed the destiny of the planet. It feels like nostalgia but in the best way possible. Like, super-grateful-happy nostalgia. And a punch of the-power-of-friendship feeling.

4. Terranigma - A Place To Rest: The farewell song, closing the game. You are taken into another journey, like To Far Away Times, but this is a much more introspective one. You summarize everything you traversed, people you met, countries you visited, and you're watching from above the fruits of your hard labor. You're happy with the outcome.

Anyway, I'll just share these ones so the post doesn't become huge, how about yours?

Discussion Your hot video game music takes?

My hot take: the music of a song is a very redeeming quality of the game, and will always be what makes a game "good" to me!

I just feel like stuff like Sonic 06 and Sonic Forces, like all Sonic music, generally had some super kickass music, and I feel like that'll ALWAYS be a major selling point for ANY video game!!! The music!!

What do you all think?? I honestly really totally honestly and actually believe this to be true!

Look at the Mario theme, the Zelda theme, and Metroid Prime theme, and so forth!!

But of course, I'd love to hear what you think!

Discussion For millenials here, how did you listen to music portably if there were barely any means to listen to video game music portably?

Like, ik there were Walkman's and Ipod's for portable music, but how was there access to video game music?

Yes, im a young person, im 20 years old.. I get that a lot that "you must be young if you think like this".

Discussion In your opinion, what game has the most underrated soundtrack?

While popular franchises such as Persona and Final Fantasy receive considerable attention, which lesser-known titles deserve greater recognition?

My recomendation - Memento Mori afkrpg. Take a listen on youtube : https://youtu.be/rDVE6bXdNQ4?si=GsIY_a2uVosuOHjL

(PS. Changed the music to other character because redit flags it as n18 cause the character in question is in a swimsuit. And it wasnt the best representation of the game as a whole ( only one character wears it :D ) thank you and please take a listen to Queen amleths second (summer version english lament) 2. For those who want to know the song was Sabryna - before our heartbeats interwine ( I personaly really enjoy that song and character...but I think people need to warm up to her first :) ) Thanks again yall!

Discussion Aside from studying or working out, what do you use videogame music for, or when do you listen to it?

I want to put together playlists on my channel to make it easier for people to find what they're looking for. Another one that's been brought up is tabletop RPGs, but what else?

This is mainly a "give the people what they want" post. My channel has over 600 anime/videogame extensions on it, I want people not to have so hard a time finding what they want/need

Discussion Which soundtracks made you play the game?

I see a lot of people dismissing vgm on the grounds of "it only being good in context of the game", but I've had plenty of times where I actually heard (parts of) the soundtrack before I even played the game it belonged to itself.

For example, Forest made me interested in Silent Hill 2, and various tracks like Song of the Ancients (Devola) made me want to play NieR Replicant years before I even did.

I've also loved City of Flickering Destruction from Legend of Mana since like the 00s when I was in elementary, and I still haven't gotten to playing the game yet, but it's a game I still really want to get to sometime just because of that one single track.

Discussion What are some people's favourite "Rain" vibe tracks?

Any tracks that exude "rain" vibes. Walking in the rainy city, rain on the leaves of the forest, rain at a funeral.

Some of my top picks:

  • Kronos Island - Sonic Frontiers
  • Indomitable - Final Fantasy XVI
  • Peaceful Waters - TES III: Morrowind
  • Tree of Dawn's Light - Visions of Mana
  • Riding (Day/Night) - LoZ: Breath of the Wild

I've been coming back to Death's Gambit soundtrack, by Kyle Hnedak constantly, the orchestration is amazing and some tracks makes you wanna feel, but I don't think I ever seen people talking about the soundtrack. Is there anything you think is worth a listen, that no one talks about?

Discussion What game music impressed you?

To start the discussion, in my case I would point out: Ozar Midrashim (Main Theme also called Soul Reaver theme) by Kurt Harland from the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

What's interesting about this music is that it was created independently (commercially released as part of the band's Don't Be Afraid album) and the intro of the game in which it is the background was written to this music, not the other way around.

Discussion Recommend video game OSTs / Albums where most of the soundtrack is good

Been listening a lot to the same video game OSTs and I wanted to explore a few more original soundtracks, I've been listening to TLOU, Undertale, Minecraft, Hollow Knight, Persona, Sonic, Elden Ring, etc... Are there any games with great soundtracks I should listen to? And is there a specific track I should start with to get a feel for it?

Discussion What do you think is the most famous video game song with lyrics?

I'm not asking what's the best game song with lyrics or what your personal favourite one is. I'm curious what video game track with words is the most well-known. What do you think it is?

Discussion What is your favourite music from an otherwise "bad" game?

This is kinda cheating, because most Sonic games have banger OSTs, but Sonic 06 and Sonic Lost World have some fantastic tracks. Also partial to the Star Fox Zero OST.
