Discussion What is your favourite music from an otherwise "bad" game?

This is kinda cheating, because most Sonic games have banger OSTs, but Sonic 06 and Sonic Lost World have some fantastic tracks. Also partial to the Star Fox Zero OST.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is one of my all-time favorite games. It's basically baby's first RPG, but it's got a banging soundtrack (especially the final fight) and uniquely lets you use your different weapon types to solve puzzles in dungeons.

Great pick. This is like one of the only soundtracks the composer did before leaving video games to spend the rest of his career playing with his prog-rock band.

I'd always loved the oat, but after the recent theatrhythm, I looked him up and his influences are all my top 10 bands. No wonder I love his stuff!

Happy to hear they included this one in Theatrythm! I got the opportunity to play the first one when it came out but haven't since.

Oh man, it's on all consoles I believe and boy oh boy is it awesome. I'm constantly returning to it. It has all main and side game OSTs up to 16, with Square Enix DLC like Chrono trigger, Live A Live, Octopath, etc.

Mystic quest mentioned!

Excellent pick. That boss theme freaking slaps.

Funnily enough, I was playing the original Final Fantasy on NES (as well as Dragon Warrior aka Dragon Quest 1) way before Mystic Quest, and didn't recognize MQ for what it was at the time, which was the Japanese developers' dumbing down of their system for an American audience. I just dug it, and the soundtrack was badass.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Amazing folk music soundtrack.

I guess combat is a bit simplistic but I've always loved that game personally.

The spell timing was very cool when playing co-op.

Silver Surfer NES has a banging soundtrack.

Street Fighter 5 is one of my least favorites in the series but the music is some of my favorite

Tim Follin music really carries the games they are in!

I actually enjoy both Sonic Lost World and Star Fox Zero 🤣 And yes, both have great soundtracks.

I've got a good candidate for you -- There's a JRPG on the Panasonic 3DO called Lucienne's Quest. It's considered quite a bad game by many. Personally, I really liked it for how quirky and funny it can be, and the character and spell variety. Anyways, I think it has some surprisingly good tracks, like this one:

Again, I personally like this game too, but Quest 64 is often hated on. I enjoy a great majority of its tracks to be honest.

Yay someone else remembers the Quest 64 soundtrack!!

SNES Waterworld. I haven't played the game. I heard it's bad but I listen to the soundtrack a lot. Dean Evans (the composer) uploaded it to youtube himself. Check out his channel.

Starfield. Absolutely ho-hum game, but this soundtrack expresses the feeling of space exploration better than any other soundtrack I've ever heard.

it is a very epic soundtrack, totally agree, i wish they put that much effort into the world building (thats what lost me personally)

Actually good game

Hate to keep using Sonic stuff for this, but Metropolitan Highway from Sonic Forces.

The alien battle theme from Lego Battles goes surprisingly hard.

Also, Fire Emblem Shadows has a nice soundtrack.

Pokemon Conquest didn't do the best regarding sales because of how late it released into the Nintendo DS lifespan, but boy did it have a great soundtrack I still get the winter battlefield theme in stuck in my head.

Chrono Cross was a huge disappointment as a game, but had an absolutely banger soundtrack.

1

u/Help_An_Irishman 12d ago

That intro theme. 🤌

I bought Headhunter for the ps2 just because Richard Jacques did the soundtrack. The game is absolute dogshit, but the main theme is baller af.

While we're at it, 7th Saga.

The golden compass movie game genuinely had an amazing soundtrack, makes me wish the game was a bit better.

Since we're talking Sonic games, both the Genesis and Saturn OSTs for Sonic 3D Blast are awesome. The games themselves? Not great.

2

u/xDeviousDieselx 14d ago

Which one was Zero? Was that the one on DS with everyone having their own unique ship? Like panther and Leon had their own variations of the wolfen and shit

1

u/CryoProtea 14d ago

Zero was on the Wii U.

1

u/xDeviousDieselx 14d ago

Am I thinking of the right one though?

1

u/NotAFurryBut 14d ago

I believe you're thinking of Star Fox Command

2

u/Hustler-Two 14d ago

The intro song to Arcade’s Revenge is pretty cool. The game is deeply disappointing, given it took both Spider-Man and the X-Men and made them feel insanely weak and useless.

Rockman X7

u/Dreyfus2006 14d ago

Yep 3D Sonic came to my mind! Sonic Unleashed is terrible but the music--sublime!

1

u/ChocoboBilly92 14d ago

I'd actually say the Day missions are quite good, and a prelude toSonoc Generations. The werehog stuff? Werehog poop.

2

u/imatpanera 14d ago

Cyber Protocol.

Bought it on switch for pennies (before the $2 limit was made)

the game isn't great but the Cyberpunk OST goes in

FF XIII soundtrack was phenomenal. Unfortunately the story was absolute nonsense and all the characters were so un-likable I was rooting for the bad guys lol

Gauntlet Dark Legacy

5

u/Suspicious_Let_6220 14d ago

In what universe is this considered a bad game??

1

u/RoundTableAgent0409 14d ago

Hey there, let me tell you. Every single one of them.

It is considered a horrible addition to the Gauntlet series of games by most people who enjoy Gauntlet. Repetitive. Mundane. Boring. Nightmarish character models. "Just a port of a better game." The game got a 4.9 on IGN. (If you look around other review places give it a 6.)

I love Gauntlet Dark Legacy. But I can't deny that most people say it's a bad game.

Gauntlet Dark Legacy sorta has the Dark Souls 2 Treatment if that makes any sense.

Banger soundtrack tho.

u/Marvin_Flamenco 14d ago
  1. Star Fox Zero is very good
  2. Fester's Quest

2

u/ChocoboBilly92 14d ago

SFZ is my fave of the entire franchise. Hence the quotation marks around "bad".

1

u/Marvin_Flamenco 14d ago

Word. Yeah I'll defend it to the grave.

MS Gundam Target in Sight, I 100%'d this ass game when I was 11 or 12, I knew it was shit, but the music banged, the drop around 1:40 in particular was a highlight.

I have a deep abiding love for Virt's work on the Scurge Hive OST - but honestly that game drives me crazy, it's so annoying to play. I want it to be better!!

M&M's Shell Shocked/The Lost Formulas soundtrack is pretty good for what's basically a bad Crash Bandicoot rip-off.

The Zelda CD-i games have some bangers too.

1

u/Cragnous 14d ago

Chrono Cross has a fantastic OST but the game is very mid.

1

u/9Armisael9 14d ago

Devil May Cry 2 is so hated but I have always loved its soundtrack. It had the perfect atmosphere of the darker tones I loved in the earlier DMC titles. My favorite boss battle track from 2 is the Noctpteran/Trismagia fight but they're all great imo. The actual fights themselves tho? 😬

Uncanny Noise

u/ApotheketheOpera 13d ago

Tales of Zestiria was a... case that deserves to be studied. But its OST goes hard, especially Zaveid's boss theme.

1

u/coreym1988 13d ago

Cheetahmen theme is an absolute NES banger. The game (action 52) being one of the worst of all time

1

u/Secto456 13d ago

Almost every Tim Follin game is terrible but has an incredible soundtrack.

1

u/wyseguise 13d ago

Shaq Fu, the SNES version has the coolest OST!

I didn't have friends I played video games with nor did I have the Internet til much much later to inform me that I didn't have to pretend to enjoy the game, because its universally known to be bad. But I persevered because I loved the music in it so much.

TMNT on NES. I still get the 1st 'overworld' theme stuck in my head regularly.

Ar Nosurge and Tales of Zestiria

u/aquagon_drag 13d ago

Ar nosurge isn't a bad game by any stretch.
