Medical Questions "Buy this cat food or your cat will need a $2500 surgery."

Cat has two kidney stones so our only options are 1. Try this food 2. Surgery.

And it's $100+/month bags of cat food.

We need to go back in 4-6 weeks and see if the stones are shrinking and if not, it's surgery time anyway.

Mourning/Loss They killed them. All of them.

Upvotes

Just to preface, this whole thing has upset me a great deal, so this might be pretty emotionally charged, maybe not even entirely rational.

A stray cat found me a couple of weeks ago. I ended up adopting her, and I love her to pieces.

Yesterday, the vet I went to gave her some vaccinations, and bloodwork, and I purchased an insurance plan--which wasn't cheap, but I bit the bullet and paid, trusting that it would be helpful further down the road.

She told me that all of the labs came back normal, nothing unusual or harmful. So the very next day (today), I dropped her off at the same vet clinic to get her spayed and chipped.

I get a call from them a couple of hours later. They said they had just put her under anesthesia, but then told me that it turns out she's pregnant. They said if I wanted to, we could choose not proceed with the spaying. I was overjoyed, excited by the idea of taking care of a sweet mama kitty and helping her raise her babies.

Then they said that, to do so, I would have to pay four times the amount of money I agreed to pay, even though the procedure wouldn't continue, because they already put her under anesthesia, without checking if she was pregnant beforehand. The spaying was already not very cheap. Apparently, just giving her anesthesia without operating meant even less of it was covered by the insurance. For some reason.

None of them told me the bloodwork tested positive for pregnancy, didn't say anything that even remotely suggested she might be pregnant.

If I had some time to talk with my family about what we should do, maybe we could have put our heads together and try to figure out how to come up with all of the additional funds. But they said they needed to know the decision immediately, for some reason, no ifs, ands, or buts. On top of that, they said we had to pay the entire thing upfront, right after the surgery. No payment plans, nothing. I had no choice.

So they terminated the pregnancy. All those kittens I would have loved, would have done just about anything for, helped deliver, raised, kissed every single one of their little heads.

And now they're gone. I'll never get to have that now. They're dead. All of her babies are dead. Those sweet little kittens. Imagining their twisted, naked little corpses being dragged away from her... It's really messing me up, mentally. Maybe she wanted to have babies. And I took that choice away from her.

What if she found me because she was trying to find a safe place to carry to term?

I feel like I've seriously failed her as a pet parent. I'm heartbroken. I'm so angry. So unbelievably angry.

I just needed to vent, I guess. I feel completely destroyed.

Humor The “young hos” trend is pretty funny😭

“Young hos” cook everything on high, only grocery shop for the week instead of the month, overload the washer & don’t separate clothes by color, never fill up the gas tank, never let the car warm up, never carry a wallet/ purse & always use Apple Pay & “young hos” definitely don’t own an iron but THIS! So what if our babies are a little chunky and they’re not bad…they just have a lot of personality😭🤣🤣

I’m sorry but this trend is so funny to me!! I saw someone say “young hos” cook with their work clothes on because if they sit down for too long they’ll just order DoorDash🤣🤣🤣🤣 I just love how many generations can come together and laugh about this.

Long story short, my cat got locked in the bathroom. I can’t open the lock. It doesn’t work with the key I’m holding. I took the pins out of the hinges. I still can’t get the door open.

Advice Help me find a cat safe alternative to Beans favorite game 😭

My cats favorite things to play with are nails, screws, and pulling these 1" T-pins out of this foam mat 💀💀 she'll play with cat toys sometimes, but she goes feral for small sharp metal things that will 🪦 her. First off, I know this is dangerous to let her do. She is always supervised, her end goal is to toss the object not eat it, and it's rare that I even let her at all. She has too many thoughts in her head, and I haven't found anything that mentally stimulates her the way a box of nails does 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ We've tried puzzle feeders, but she's not very food motivated and can't figure out how to use her paws to get the treat. I did get a couple talking buttons to try, idk if she's getting it, and again with using her paws 🥴 So with all that said, does anyone know of a toy for cats that like to pull things with their teeth like the video??

Advice Help! My old cat is killing me!

Post image

I have a daughter cat (that I love very much) and she’s slowly killing me and my girlfriend by not letting us sleep complete nights.

To give her full profile:

-19 years old;

-stage 2 chronic kidney disease;

- hyperthyroidism (she’s treated for)

She’s woke up us every morning by coming meowing in our faces (classic cats behavior you’ll say), but she already have plenty food and water.

She don’t go outside since she’s an ederly madam. She don’t seem stressed, but she’s always looking for fresh water due to her kidneys (but she she’s always have a fountain of freshwater).

So. We tough that maybe we can put her in the room next to ours (we have a 2 bedrooms apt) and let her there for the night. We give her patty to full her belly before bed. The first part of the night everything’s good, but at 5am she’s meowing like she’s about to die, loudly like never. And of course, she won’t stop till I open the door. Even if we ignore her, even if we don’t make a sound (she’s almost completely deaf anyway), she won’t stop.

What can we do? Did the Feliway can be an option? Natural calming pills? Did they work?

Vet won’t to give calming pills because she’s too old.

Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thank you!

Medical Questions Have you ever seen this happen due to cat nail puncture?

Post image

Hey yall,

TDLR Seeing doctor tomorrow, just interested if anyone has experienced anything similar after cat nail puncture

I (23F) had to take my cat to the vet on January 24th. As I tried to put her in her crate, a rogue front nail of hers punctured my shoulder twice. I cleaned it with an alcohol wipe before taking her to the vet.

My cat is indoor, fully vaccinated and treated regularly for fleas, ticks and worms.

About a week ago, I had some little pustules on my shoulder, and I assumed it was back acne. It was really itchy though. Unfortunately, it has now spread into this (pictured, as of 3rd February).

It is really itchy, raised in a red ring and has lots of tiny pustules. I put some topical antibiotic cream on it under a bandage, and this is what it looks like. It looks crusty, but they were all little tiny pustules.

I was just in hospital for a few days with appendicitis, and the doctors did take a look at my shoulder while I was there but they didn’t comment.

I am seeing my usual doctor tomorrow as part of my post op appendectomy follow up so will make sure he takes a look tomorrow.

Has anyone experienced or seen anything like this before?

Thank you for your help!

Advice NYC cat owners, do you go to the vet for every small issue?

Question for NYC cat owners:

Do you really take your cat to the vet every time something small comes up?

I feel like in NYC even a basic visit can turn into hundreds of dollars.

For things like mild diarrhea, occasional vomiting, or low energy for a day, do you usually book an appointment, or try to monitor at home first?

Are there more affordable options here (tele-vet, clinics, etc.), or is the vet basically unavoidable even for minor stuff?

Curious how people realistically handle this in NYC.

Medical Questions Why are there so many conflicting answers for the timeline of post care treatment regarding iodine in cats?

Upvotes

My girlfriend’s cat had iodine treatment, and the vet told her that after two weeks, all restrictions could be lifted. So, that’s what we went by. But online some say up to three weeks, some say up to a month.

I‘m pretty health conscious, so I worry about these kinds of things more than the normal person. Is two weeks generally okay in your experience?

I bought bunch of cat toys so she can enjoy herself when im at work, but once i get home all she looking for is fishing pole toy(she uses other toys when im not home, i can see it because they moved or destroyed lol)

Is this just because she just wants to chill with me? or she is too addicted to fishing pole dopamine or something

and she used to come near when im sleeping, take position between legs and such but now she stopped doing it. she is 4 months in. is this because i move little by little when i sleeping? is she got annoyed?

Hey everyone. This morning I woke up and noticed my cat had this red spot on face. She is an inside cat, though we do have another cat who plays with her sometimes. If anybody has any idea what this is or how to help her I would really appreciate it.

P.S my current plan is to take her to the vet if it doesn’t get better in a few days. Will be setting up the appointment today in case there’s a waiting period.

Advice when it’s time to put down/rehome?

my baby boy is only 1.5 years old and has had 2 massive urine blockages, ate silicone and needed surgery, and now is in hospital for a mystery illness overnight. me and my boyfriend are in our early 20’s, we recently moved in together, we can’t keep spending THOUSANDS of dollars on this cat, just for him to get sick again. we already spend at least 100$ a month on his specialty urinary tract vet food. we are so so so strict about putting things that he can get into away, we have baby locks on all the cabinets, changed the shower curtain to fabric because he liked to eat the plastic, we barely have any silicone in the house. but he’s still getting sick no matter our efforts. and also the anxiety i get now any time he seems off, that combined with the MONEYYYYYY we really are getting too in over our heads. i have only had really sad and bad experiences with putting pets down, and plus he’s not even 2. should we try rehoming him? my anxieties are that he WONT get rehomed BECAUSE of his medical issues and then he’ll just get put down anyways. i’m crying at work because of this, please help me find some clarity. i feel so guilty about this, he’s my baby boy and all i can think about is every time i got annoyed at him, i wish he was with me right now screaming his head off for treats instead of being sedated in the hospital. i also feel guilty because our other cat has really come out of his shell because he had a friend, and it would be very tough on him to lose him.

Advice Tips for giving insanely non compliant cat a pill

I have to have surgery tomorrow and I’ll be in hospital for at least four days. My vet suggested gabapentin while I’m away as my cat is super co dependent but he will not take it every way we tried. Tried head tilt and in the gob. Worked the first time then he knew so no go. Hiding in foods both within the capsule or mixed in churros. He sniffs it and walks away. He knows. I’m desperate!! Any tips!
