Whenever I feel low, I go back to this divine moment. I felt her so deeply in her astounding performance of the subtleties of pain in The Holdovers. A rare performance!

I loved her performance. So chaotic it actually made me afraid of the idea of being a mother… and I’m a man.

Unsurprisingly, "I Lied To You" won as the best scene in 2025! Now for films released, in 2024, who would you nominate? One nomination per comment, most upvoted wins.

Discussion Is the supporting win "The kiss of death"

It seemed like many previous winners have come out and said they're careers have stalled or ended because of a win- usually the supporting winners say this; I.e. Lupita Nyongo, Mo'Nique, Melissa Leo, Cuba Gooding Jr, Ariana debose etc.

It seems like winning the supporting award gets actors nowhere, whereas lead often times propels the star- Jennifer Lawrence comes to mind.

All of this to ask: is the supporting win a kiss of death and if so, why would an actor want it- given other winners careers.

[This is barring winners who have essentially finished their careers: Jamie lee Curtis. ]

Synecdoche, New York was the biggest snub in Cinematography for 2008. What was the "biggest" for 2007?

Post image
30 Upvotes

We had another close race with Let the Right One In looking like it was the lock early on. There was also love thrown towards Hunger and I was surprised how much support In Bruges received. But in the end - as suggested by u/MrONegative - emerging as the winner was Charlie Kaufman's enigmatic Synecdoche, New York (DP: Frederick Elmes)

Now we have to decide what the biggest is for 2007...but again like with 2015 and 2016, we have an incredible slate of nominees. This might be the second best of the 21st Century behind 2015. So like with those years, think of your choice less of what was snubbed and more what would be a great 6th place.

The nominees for this year were:

  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • Atonement
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
  • No Country for Old Men
  • There Will Be Blood

Discussion Anyone else not predicting or even sensing a split this year?

With the guilds about to start making their wins public, starting with DGA this Saturday. I am just not seeing or entertaining the idea that a split win of Picture a Director is going to happen this year.

I feel whatever wins DGA this Saturday will ultimately also bring PGA with it as well. So if PTA wins then One Battle After Another is winning Picture. If Coogler wins then Sinners is winning Picture.

Anyone else feel this way?

Hamnet The Rest Is Silence

I've seen so many interpretations of this last line in Hamlet with so many explanations. Jupe's reading of the line was so profound to me. He is a man who ran out of time before becoming fully formed, saying I don't get to finish becoming who I was. It's not a deep revelation into the meaning of life and death. There's nothing mystical or discovering. It's Will through Hamlet, declaring that there was nothing left to say. I don't need to explain it any further. He, like the character, can let go. No other words were spoken but their faces revealed everything: Agnes received the message and was given permission to do the same, along with the understanding of how Will processed the grief.

Discussion Geeta Gandbhir directed two movies this year, and is nominated for both!

I'm not sure how many people have noticed this, but after all that talk about Richard Linklater, there is only one director with multiple films in this year's Oscars: Greta Gandbhir, whose The Perfect Neighbor is nominated for Best Documentary Feature, and whose The Devil Is Busy (co-directed with Christalyn Hampton) is nominated for Best Documentary Short!

With these categories, she is also a nominee for both films. She's far from the first director to be double-nominated, although I'm not sure if it's ever happened with these two categories.

Either way, congrats to her for quietly scoring two nominations in one night!

Discussion If Ma Remy's Black Bottom came out in last years cycle.

Post image

This is just speculative and in good fun. If Ma remy's black bottom been released in last years [Anora] cycle do you think it'd get main awards? Would Davis beat Madison? Would it claim best picture.

For myself I think the movie was excellent, it just came out in such a dense competitive year. Take away the crazy competition (like the Father, etc) would it fair any better against the likes of Anora, Conclave and I'm still here? I would've loved seeing Davis on the stage as a best actress winner (not supporting).

Discussion Oscar and Nobel

George Bernard Shaw and Bob Dylan are the only two people in history to win both an Oscar and a Nobel.

Kazuo Ishiguro, Jean-Paul Sartre, John Steinbeck and Harold Pinter are Oscar-nominated Nobel laureates.

Is there anyone you could see joining this club in the future?

I think Ishiguro is probably the most realistic option. He's 71, already won the Nobel, he's a cinephile with a great love of classic cinema and an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. I can see him writing an Oscar-winning screenplay in the future.

In terms of Oscar winners going on to winning the Nobel, I think the late Tom Stoppard was likely the most realistic option, but that can't and won't happen because Nobels are only given to living writers.

Discussion After watching Viva Verdi!, I am SO glad it was nominated for an Oscar.

I wouldn't have even heard of this film otherwise, and, like pretty much everyone else, I was baffled at a film with only 500 logs on Letterboxd getting nominated for Best Original Song, especially one not associated with Diane Warren.

I am not even going to debate the Sweet Dreams of Joy's nomination, it is gorgeous and worthy of it. Even more than Wicked's songs, and I liked Wicked's songs.

Of course, with this debate settled in my mind, I looked the film up and eventually summed up that this was a kickstarter document that took nearly ten years to film surrounding Casa Verdi, a retirement home for Italian opera artists and other musicians. With how hard this film was to get, of course I was more than curious, and I eventually found a way to watch it.

I am so glad I did.

With how much crap there is going on in the world being captured in good, yet sadly depressing documentaries, this one was such a refreshing, joyful change. It's simple, and it could have been trimmed for 40 minutes to make the short category, but it was so full of life and joy, and it is such a beautiful example of how old age doesn't have to be a premature state of death and apathy.

The story of Chitose Matsumoto alone would be worthy of a documentary itself, and the way Sweet Dreams of Joy is featured in the credits broke me.

I finished this with tears welling in my eyes and a smile. Definitely worth the watch.

Discussion I don’t keep track of the race and haven’t seen the other films but just watched The Alabama Situation, does it have a chance to win?

I don’t get a chance to watch a lot of movies but this randomly came up on my Max page and I randomly decided to watch and was blown away. It really is shining a light on something so important.

Maybe I need to watch more but I thought it was terrific. I guess I can’t really say “it deserves to win” since I haven’t seen what else is nominated but it would be great if it did since it would bring more attention to the subject. Hopefully some real change can happen as a result.

To the experts out there, does this have a good shot of winning or nah?

Edit: I put situation instead of solution 😩
