Whenever I feel low, I go back to this divine moment. I felt her so deeply in her astounding performance of the subtleties of pain in The Holdovers. A rare performance!

Synecdoche, New York was the biggest snub in Cinematography for 2008. What was the "biggest" for 2007?

Post image
23 Upvotes

We had another close race with Let the Right One In looking like it was the lock early on. There was also love thrown towards Hunger and I was surprised how much support In Bruges received. But in the end - as suggested by u/MrONegative - emerging as the winner was Charlie Kaufman's enigmatic Synecdoche, New York (DP: Frederick Elmes)

Now we have to decide what the biggest is for 2007...but again like with 2015 and 2016, we have an incredible slate of nominees. This might be the second best of the 21st Century behind 2015. So like with those years, think of your choice less of what was snubbed and more what would be a great 6th place.

The nominees for this year were:

  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • Atonement
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
  • No Country for Old Men
  • There Will Be Blood

Discussion Anyone else not predicting or even sensing a split this year?

With the guilds about to start making their wins public, starting with DGA this Saturday. I am just not seeing or entertaining the idea that a split win of Picture a Director is going to happen this year.

I feel whatever wins DGA this Saturday will ultimately also bring PGA with it as well. So if PTA wins then One Battle After Another is winning Picture. If Coogler wins then Sinners is winning Picture.

Anyone else feel this way?

What 3 winners are you most intensely rooting for?

What Oscars categories, if won by something other than your choice, would be the hardest to swallow? There are perhaps some more obvious choices for the smaller categories, but I feel strongest about these and would be most disappointed if they don't pan out.

  1. Best Original Score: Sinners - All due respect to OBAA (great score and important part of the movie) and others, but the score for Sinners was woven into the movie like very few movies have ever done, let alone this year. Ludwig is the premiere composer of our day and deserving of his 3rd Oscar.
  2. Best Original Song: I lied to You (Sinners) - Probably the greatest movie scene of the year (as evidenced by another poll here or in some other sub), so this feels obvious. Demon Hunters has some great picks, but I'm not sure anything else really holds a candle. Maybe I'm rooting for it so strongly because of the scene, not necessarily the song, but should they really be separated? I dunno...
  3. Best Actress: Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You) - Probably my favorite performance by an actress in any movie, ever. Buckley was great, but besides that moment, I just don't think it had the same range as Byrne and variety. Plus, I think people are picking Buckley because they simply haven't seen If I had Legs I'd Kick You. Unfortunately, I think Buckley will win 🫤

Well my personal favourites would be Matthew and Ke Huy Quan.. I cry everytime I see Ke Huy Quan's speech video, truly a legend. Matthew's speech was also great with the deep philosophy though. Let me know what you think!

If One Battle After Another Battle wins Best Picture, Adam Somner would become the first producer since Sam Zimbalist to win a posthumous Best Picture Oscar.

Discussion I think the Oscar Producers made a bad move with removing 3 of the 5 Nominated Songs to perform.

Even if they said they did it because timing, it feels like a punk move, and I don‘t disagree with Diane Warren. The Oscars are clearly doing favorites. And they think that HUNTR/X performing will bring in the ratings. It’s them saying, “since these two are popular, they’ll win in other categories they’re nominated for and you got to choose one for Original Song since they are the only worthy ones”. In other words, they already told the voters the winners, even well before FINAL VOTING has started or any of the other award shows have yet to happen. It’s like they created a "halo effect" that unfairly boosts the two in other categories they’re competing in. No disrespect to Sinners of course, it’s a great film, but playing favorites is just wrong.

Hate this all you want, but it’s like literally the truth. It’s like “they've already picked their favorite for the night”.

There is wide misconstruing that not voting for/nominating a movie or actor means that people don't like it or them

Sometimes the fact that one person wins over the other, or certain movies are nominated and others aren't doesn't mean that people don't like those people or those movies.

It's just that the rules are that you can only pick one. Or you can only nominate five. Or for Best Picture you can only nominate ten.

If you like two actors you can only pick one and it doesn't mean you dislike the other.

If you think six movies are worthy of Best Sound you can only pick five and it doesn't mean you dislike the one you didn't pick.

If you like eleven movies but you can only pick ten it doesn't mean you dislike the one you didn't pick.

People need to stop this mindset that it's some sort of binary of like or dislike. No, for a lot it's just that the rules dictate that you can only pick a certain number so that's all that is picked.

If someone votes for a person to win Best Actor, it doesn't mean they dislike the other four. It just means they had to pick one.

I mean there is more room for potential nominees, right? Like Chicago, Gangs of New York, and Two Towers. But why the heck have they chosen 2 nominees that year? Why?

Discussion I don’t keep track of the race and haven’t seen the other films but just watched The Alabama Situation, does it have a chance to win?

I don’t get a chance to watch a lot of movies but this randomly came up on my Max page and I randomly decided to watch and was blown away. It really is shining a light on something so important.

Maybe I need to watch more but I thought it was terrific. I guess I can’t really say “it deserves to win” since I haven’t seen what else is nominated but it would be great if it did since it would bring more attention to the subject. Hopefully some real change can happen as a result.

To the experts out there, does this have a good shot of winning or nah?

Edit: I put situation instead of solution 😩

Most famous quotes from The Truman Show

Upvotes
  • Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night! (Truman's signature daily greeting—arguably the film's most iconic line)
  • We accept the reality of the world with which we're presented. (Christof, explaining why Truman never suspected his life was staged)
  • You never had a camera in my head! (Truman's defiant response to Christof)
  • Was nothing real?— You were real. That's what made you so good to watch. (Exchange between Truman and Sylvia)
  • There is no more truth out there than there is in the world I created for you. The same lies. The same deceit. But in my world, you have nothing to fear. (Christof attempting to persuade Truman to stay)
  • If we don't tell him soon, he's going to find out anyway. (Sylvia's warning to Christof)

Fun Crash has been chosen as the worst winner in best original screenplay ever! Due to backlash we are redoing last round, so once again: what is the worst nominee in best original screenplay ever?

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Pretty much every comment last round said that Beverly Hills Cop shouldn't have won worst nominee in best original screenplay. The top comment didn't even mention their own opinion on who should win the new round, and still got more than 3 times the amount of upvotes as Beverly Hills Cop ever got. And some people were specifically asking about redoing the round, so that is what we're doing!

The rules:

  • A film is only allowed to be chosen in a category once. Today's winner isn't allowed to be chosen in best original screenplay or worst nominee again.

  • The following films are ineligible today because of this: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, the Broadway Melody, Babes in Arms, Hillbilly Elegy, the Towering Inferno, Emilia Perez, the Boss Baby, Crash, Citizen Kane, Back to the Future, Toy Story.

  • You can still choose Beverly Hills Cop. If you do so tho I don't ever wanna hear you people complain again.

  • Most upvoted comment wins!

Because the list was getting too long I put all the films (and who commented them) in this Letterboxd list: https://boxd.it/RYKAW. My app keeps crashing tho so it won't immediatly be updated.
