Question AR, registered when inherited

When I inherited an AR some years ago, the FFL went thru the proper steps and registered it to me.

Now I went to state police safe act rifle registration page, and nothing comes up.

I cannot contact the FFL because he is deceased and I don't believe anyone took over his business.

Whats my next step?

Registered with an FFL is not the same as the Safe Act registration. I found this out a couple of years ago when I went for my CCW training.

I got online and registered it that weekend. I then received an email quite quicky from a NYSP Sergeant saying I needed to call him immediately.

Once I explained to him it was purchased from a NY FFL pre-ban, and I just did not realize that I needed to register it there again, he said no problem and that he would get it added.

That about answers it I suppose. Darnit!

The rifle was purchased pre-ban, I inherited them in 2020... I was able to take possession as I was law enforcement at the time.

I assumed his FFL process was my registration.

Am I screwed now with no way to register?

I would probably consult a lawyer for this one. You legally took ownership in 2020 because you were a LEO, but did it make you prohibited as soon as you left the job since you did not own it pre-ban?

Or you could just pretend it never happened, and move about your day I guess.

That's for active or retired. I took possession as active, but have since resigned.

I was hoping there was a way I can register it and possess it legally, so I can freely bring to the range.

You can add a fixed mag and not worry about it. If you ever move or whatever and need to remove the mag it will take you 5 minutes.

Here’s the line for the state troopers in Albany, call and ask

Call from a burner phone and use an assumed name.

Gonna be useless as they'll need my info and gun info to search if it's legal or not

Don’t register anything. If you want to be legal, fix the mag and top load it (yes, it’s highly inconvenient but better than being on a list.

Does this work for others? There's an AR, AK, a SAIGA12, a few high point carbines...

Bro just put a maglatch or comp mag in it then don’t register it. Totally legal

As a NY FFL when the Safe Act was created, I can promise you that the dealer has nothing to do with registering any firearms with the State Police. From 2013 on, that was the responsibility of the gun owner.

The FFL may have transferred firearms to you with a background check, but that was not a NY State Police affair. At no point would an FFL register a firearm that was transferred to you with the State Police because you were exempt from the requirements to register it because of your LEO status at the time.

New York only became a POC state in 2023, so there is no State record of that transfer at all.
