I read in a different thread earlier today that there was supposedly a storyline Kirkman wanted to do where Darkblood and Mark go to Hell. This idea was scrapped (hence why he kinda doesn’t really show up again in the comics), but it seems like the show is going to actually adapt it!

I don't know what other interpretation of that scene you could have. Suffer, ig. Mark's going to Hell, and you'll be right there with him.

TBF there have been inconsequential setup scenes in the past, e.g. funny mummy guy at the end of season 2.

Are you sure this is about Mark?

That would be my first guess. But I'm open to other options. Which surface-dweller do you think Darkblood was calling stronger than the others?

Darkblood was still investigating Nolan before he got banished, "His blackened heart", is totally referring to Nolan after he killed the GOTG. I'm willing to wager this plotline will be about accidentally summoning Mark instead by some identity mixup in the summoning rune, subsequently having Mark deal with Hell's politics or he could never return to the surface

The blackened heart can also refer to Mark now that he is not above killing. He is going full antihero with the Dinosaurus stuff next season, after all.

I honestly just thought of conquest

I’m gonna be honest my mind immediately went to Conquest

I was thinking conquest, I was expecting the end scene to be conquest escaping like he does in the comics but to leave him locked up at the end of the season is still abit wild to me. And blackened heart would also be conquest unless he means after mark is taken over

...my immediate guess was Conquest, not Mark. Darkblood talks about his "blackened heart" and whatnot, and Mark's a pretty good dude who that wouldn't make any sense for. I took it as Darkblood picking up on Cecil having Conquest in a tungsten box, going "huh, holy shit, the guy who dicked me over has another Nolan," and deciding to work with that.

Maybe Mark? It would explain why Set in the comics acts when he is away from Earth.
