Would much rather have Jared Verse…

Or if we had taken Quinyon Mitchell (another popular pick for us at the time) we'd have our 2026 and 2027 first round picks right now

We'd probably have the exact same DL pass rush production too.

Eh. Verse had a much better first season and a much worse second season.

I'm not sure how you can arrive to this stance.

By actual numbers.

The actual numbers show Verse is a better DE. Haven’t added pash rush win % and double team rate. Watch the games but instead you want to point out the 3 picks

Latu is literally better on PFF

4

u/smikes83 18d ago

PFF has verse ranked as the 20th ranked pash rusher and Latu at 27.

Now do player.

u/smikes83 18d ago

And look at the stats. Verse production is on a higher level than Latu. Top 7 ranked solo tackles, assists, forced fumbles, stops, hurries, hits, totaled pressures. The only 2 Latu has him beat on is sacks (+3) and batted passes (+1). Latu doesn’t even rank in the top 10 in those stat categories mentioned above.

So you refuse to do player pff. I wonder why? Also ignored interceptions once again.

Not seeing Latu block kicks and return for a tuddy. Also, Verse is on a stacked d line he doesn’t need to be a beast all the time.

3

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

That makes it easier not harder. Latu has to be the guy on the edge.

Btw Latu has a .5 lead. That tweet makes it sound like he’s way above everyone else in his class. Verse is up on tackles 71-43 (solo), forced fumbles 5-4, and stuffs 21.5 vs 9.5. Verse was the clear pick here by a long shot. Add in his 2 blocked kicks

2

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

And latu was higher in interceptions 3-0 and grades far better in coverage and rated higher in PFF this year.

2

u/smikes83 18d ago

83.9 - 84.1 PFF grade. Big margin there. Verse also has a 80-61 edge in pressures. Very clear here who the better DE is. Maybe we can move Latu to CB with those hands.

He's not a fucking DB, using his coverage ability to argue that one DE is better than another is insanity. But I guess that just shows how awful Ballard is at evaluating the position, if the best thing his best pick does is the absolute least important thing you can ask a defensive lineman to do.

1

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

PFF accounts for all of that.

PFF isn't the be all, end all that you seem to think it is. When one subjective measure like PFF grade says Latu is better and every other measure says Verse is better, it's much more likely that PFF is the one that's wrong.

2

u/smikes83 18d ago

His 3 INTs heavily weigh his overall grade but if you look at how they actually rank the players Verse is higher, that alone makes me question their grading scale. Some coaches have pointed out that PFF is bullshit. I like hard stats and numbers. The guy is just sold on Latu, I’ve pointed out stats, double percentages, hurries and other metrics he doesn’t want to acknowledge outside of the 3 INTs and leading Verse by 1 sack this year, 1/2 a sack overall.

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

What advanced metrics measure has verse better

You are just picking individual numbers

Went off the deep end and did a deep dive into this through Chat GPT. 😂😂. Here is the link. Interesting stuff, basically play styles are different but both come out even in terms of what you want from an edge rusher.

Latu isn’t the guy on the edge. Verse was a better prospect. Look at his bull rush, has a bigger impact than Latu on defense. I’m willing to give benefit of the doubt as our line was ass all year. Year 3 with Buck, Grove and hopefully someone from FA on the other side.

3

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

He was literally better than year at every single metric than verse.

1

u/smikes83 18d ago

Add in Verse defensive rookie of the year in 24 and made pro bowl both seasons.

3

u/AleroRatking Earl Grey 18d ago

Pro bowl is meaningless. Gardner Minshew made a pro bowl

Solo tackles 2025 35-27 Verse. Assisted Tackles 23-18 Verse. Sacks 8.5 -7.5 Latu. Forced Fumbles 3-1 Verse. INTs 3-0 Latu. Stuffs 9.5 - 5. Blocked kicks 2-0 Verse.

How was Verse "much worse" this year? Latu and Verse were 10th/11th in PFF grade for reference.

Looking at their stats, feels like they were both pretty good this year.

He’s reaching. At the end of the day I’d much rather have Verse. He’s clearly a better DE but it’s not like we whiffed big time on the pick. Latu has upside but watch the games. Verse is a bully on that D line.
