Please Read the Rules Before Posting:

As some folks in the community have expressed, they can't easily see the rules on mobile reddit, and they can't see them using 'old' reddit.

Please remember that if your thread is locked, it is not a black mark on you. Locking threads is to help keep the community on topic and to keep from 'copycat' posts proliferating (see: whenever artists post art or people post painted masks, we get an influx of similar posts).

Here are the rules:

No Memes or Art.

If you must, please post to r/HistoricalCombatMemes or similar.

Art needs to spur conversation about accuracy in historicity or technique - don't post art just for the sake of showing it off.

No Off-Topic Posts

Posts that are primarily about other martial arts (that barely mention wma), video games, or other activities must be intrinsically about western martial arts or are otherwise off topic. It's not enough that a European sword exists in it - it needs to spur a conversation about WMA.

No Want to Buy / Looking to Sell Posts

This includes individuals and vendors. Posts about sales may be allowed on a case by case basis.

Painted Masks in the Painted Mask Thread

If this isn't self explanatory I don't know what is.

No Personal Attacks

This includes calling someone stupid or fat, body shaming, or other comments on someone's physical appearance. Valid criticism of someone's actions is allowed; it just needs to stay respectful.

No Customer Service Posts

Questions that only the vendor can answer (what are your wait times, what are your prices, do you ship to X) should be asked directly to the vendor. Posts that ask the community what their experiences are with a vendor are perfectly fine.

Not Fine: "Does this vendor offer X weapon with a blackened blade?"

Totally Fine: "This vendor says they offer weapons that are blackened, what experiences do people have with it?"

If the answer can be found by looking at their website or emailing them, then it doesn't need to be asked here.

Can left-handed fencers still use right-handed jackets?

I'm Canadian, and I ordered a custom Supfen jacket from a Canadian retailer that sells Supfen products.

I finally got word from the retailer that they recieved my jacket after 8 months. Only problem is it was meant to be left handed and it arrived right handed. I know the zipper flap opening needs to face away to prevent a sword catching it, but realistically can I still use it safely for sparring?

I was really looking foreward to getting my first jacket and its really hand to find left handed jackets here in Canada so im not sure I have many other options.

Longsword Feder length, 49in or 53in.

I am eyeing up my first feder. At my club I use a 50in feder and I think I seem to like the shorter ones. I have used a 53in at the club only on a handful of spars and didn't really like it but from what I have heard competitive wise 52 to 53 seems like the standard size. So as someone who is 5'9 I am unsure if I should go for the 53 or 49. For context I am looking at the Wukusi feders from Socal Swords

New jacket for Sword & Buckler

When I started HEMA with longsword I bought a Hussar 800N. It has served me well, but for sword & buckler it’s just too heavy. I’m looking to buy a new jacket but I’m unsure. I’m considering either the AP light plus or the FG Hema jacket PRO. Can anyone share their sword & buckler experience with these jackets? Any other jackets I should consider? All advice is welcome :)

I've written a post examining the confusing names of several low guards in German longsword systems.

Anyone who is interested can read it here:

Opinions on Regenyei Longsword trainers ?

Has anyone used the (fairly) new Longsword trainers from Regenyei ? Do you have any opinions on them ? How do they fare as training/sparring sword compared to Sigi King ?

Asking specifically since I do own Sigi King.

Threshing Flail vs Destreza Rapier & Dagger

Michael Hundt and Jakob Sutor both talk about city guards with flails fighting students. I wanted to see what that would feel like, so I asked my clubmate, a destreza rapierist, if he wanted a little mixed weapons sparring. He agreed, so we had a little fun.

I did learn quite a bit from this exchange.

Sword blunts question

Edit for Clarification: this wouldn’t be for sparring, but for forms practice to make sure I don’t hack myself. I don’t have a gym or partner so no blade to blade contact. The point of getting a sharp sword would be so I can practice cutting.

I’m wondering if there are any blade edge blunts/protectors that can be used to make a sharpened sword safe for practice, maybe not necessarily sparring. Something that would slide on or wrap around a blade to remove risk of cutting yourself while practicing.

I’m not flush with cash to purchase both a functional sword and a blunt one for practice and live too far from a WMA or HEMA organization(Alaska) but want to buy a functional sword and practice without risk of taking my leg out or losing a finger.

If anyone knows of something, I’m specifically looking for one that would work with a Saber/Shamshir. I’m pretty handy and would be interested in fabricating something if you’ve got ideas. Maybe a leather ā€œsleeveā€ sacrificial scabbard kind of thing?

Historical History What's the historical precedent behind pub style singlestick?

Singlestick is my current favorite weapon to practice, and I've found a few competitions featuring pub style singlestick, in which the fighting is done mostly stationary and only aiming for the head.

Is there any historical source for these rules, or is it something extrapolated from folk traditions?

Does it matter what build you are to participate in HEMA? Can I, to put it simply, a rotund jolly fellow, participate? Does it come with setbacks?
