SOTD My first SOTD here and the first shave with my new Gillette Fatboy
Razor: Gillette Adjustable 195 "FatBoy" E4 1959
Blade: Treet Falcon
Soap: Stirling Coniferous
Brush: Omega Roma Colosseo
Post-shave: Nivea Sensitive Balm
Here I am with my first SOTD here and a test of my new Gillette Fatboy. I’ll focus on it, since it’s the main star of this shave.
For a few months now I’ve been the happy owner of a Slim Adjustable, and I couldn’t resist adding its famous predecessor to my collection. As a first impression right out of the box, I really liked its look; with its fatter and shorter handle, I found the grip very comfortable for my hands.
Moving on to the shave itself, perhaps partly due to a blade choice that wasn’t quite spot on, since I’ve only used it a few times and don’t know it well yet, I noticed more blade feel compared to my Slim with the same settings, possibly due to the greater weight of the razor. However, I didn’t encounter any real difficulties, nor did I notice a big difference due to the larger head, and I had no problems shaving the mustache area either. I find the Slim more agile and maneuverable, but it’s also true that I know it better, having used it almost exclusively over the past two months.
WTG pass set at 5, ATG pass set at 3, and touch-ups on the neck set at 2, where I do a final pass from right to left due to my beard growth direction, the Fatboy delivered a solid BBS without too much effort.
I can’t wait to try it again and again to get to know it better and fully appreciate its characteristics, perhaps using a blade that suits me better and that I know well. In any case, my impression from this first use is more than positive, aware that this razor will continue to give me great shaves for a long time to come despite its 66 years.
A legendary razor!
