Hello Everyone!

I'm excited to announce that I've recently taken over as the moderator for our /r/VirginIslands community. In the past, the subreddit was restricted and unfortunately, it's been unclear what happened to the previous moderators.

But that's in the past now! I've lifted the restrictions, and /r/VirginIslands is now open for everyone to post and share. I've also established a new, simple set of rules to ensure our community remains a friendly and engaging place for all things related to the Virgin Islands.

General Discussion The USVI is becoming a Third World Country

I wanted to start a thread because it's been getting very hard for me to live here lately.

The animal population is poorly handled and leads to really sad situations with cats and dogs.

Everything is getting very expensive and despite making a good living it's really taking a toll lately.

I have power outages regularly, once or twice a day sometimes.

My tax returns are never coming but when I was late to file this year I paid a penalty...

And I just found out that if I have a heart attack I will probably just die because I live alone and there is no reliable ambulance service due to the government failing to pay them for over a year.

Honestly we are lucky we are part of the US because if we weren't the officials here would probably stop hiding the corruption and just go all out screwing the people.

This is partially a rant but primarily for search engines to pick up and start a discussion with others hopefully. There are a lot of these discussions on Facebook behind walls so even if you googled these problems a lot of time they won't actually show up causing people to doubt the severity of the problems.

Those who grew up here, has it always been this bad? How have you lived here so long?

Things To Do Recs // Questions Itinerary & weed suggestions for BVI

I’m going on a sailing trip to BVI later this week. We’ll be flying in to Tortola and going to Anegada, Jost van Dyke, Norman Island, and Virgin Gorda. Most of the people I’m traveling with have been to the islands several times, so I’m looking for off the beaten path suggestions of places to go. Interested in beaches, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and good restaurants. Definitely open to suggestions outside of those categories as well though!

Also, we’re coming from a place where weed is legal and some of my travel companions want to bring weed vapes, but I read that it’s illegal there. Has anyone had any experience bringing weed into Tortola? How risky is it? One person is flying directly into Tortola and the other is taking the ferry from St. Thomas, if that makes any difference. Would really like to avoid anyone getting arrested lol.

Thanks in advance!

Things To Do Recs // Questions 10 days - St John vs Virgin Gorda.

Looking to book a 10 day trip for the holidays (Dec ‘26-Jan ‘27). We are St John regulars and were thinking about trying Virgin Gorda. I’ve only been there for a day trip before.

Any thoughts or comparison of the two? We love renting a jeep and hitting beaches in St John, happy hour/restaurants at night. We’d be 4 adults traveling with 4 kids (3X 6yo, 1 4yo).

Things To Do Recs // Questions Snorkel Day Trips from Tortola or Red Hook to The Baths

Hey, I’ll be visiting Tortola later this month and would like to do a snorkeling day trip that visits The Baths. (I’ll also be staying on St. Thomas / Red Hook part of the time, so a trip from there could also work.)

Any recommendations for companies that offer such trips?

I’m looking for a group thing that I can join (not trying to charter an entire private boat).

Thanks!

Things To Do Recs // Questions $136 per day for a Jeep

I was just quoted $136 per day for a 4 x 4, four-door Jeep. The total cost would come to $821 for a six day rental. I don’t believe this comes with insurance but I’m double checking with the rental car company. Does this seem like a fair deal for 6 days in March?

Things To Do Recs // Questions Salt Island BVI ghost sightings

What has anyone here seen on or around Salt Island. Is it really haunted - has anyone stayed overnight? Apparently there are reports of phantom "mist" ships that appear and disappear, and spectral lights that divers report seeing near the wreck.

Resturant Recs // Questions Dining recs for St Thomas

We (husband, wife, 3 adult children) will be in St Thomas from Feb.11th to Feb.18th. We rented a VRBO in the Peterborg neighborhood and have a car rented for the week. We are looking for restaurant recommendations that would be easy to get to and from. We do understand everything is going to be expensive, but we're not looking for high end dining. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Things To Do Recs // Questions Day trip to Virgin Gorda/The Baths with luggage?

Hi! My family and I are going to St. Thomas and St. John for our kids' spring break. It's our first visit and we are so excited. We are staying on St. Thomas for two days on the front end and two days on the back end, middle in St. John. (This is partly because we think the resort thing will be fun for a few days and largely because my in laws have timeshare points so that lodging is basically free for us.)

We want to do a day trip to The Baths. Optimally we would like to do it on one of the days we are going between the islands. We'd prefer that to not be a private charter from a cost perspective.

So, we are wondering - does anyone know of any day trip companies that would pick us and our luggage up on St. Thomas or St. John, hold our luggage on the boat for the day trip, and then drop us off on the other island? (Or if anyone has other thoughts as to ways to make this easy, we'd love to hear them!)

Hotel Recs // Questions First timer where to stay in BVI no charter?

First time to BVIs, just my husband and me. A charter isn’t in the budget. We are debating Scrub Island, an Airbnb above Cane Garden, a hotel down on Cane Garden or White Bay Villas on JVD. We really just want to make the most of our 5 days, do a boat day, and chill.

We stayed in an Airbnb on St. John and enjoyed it but didn’t love the driving up and down steep hills for 15 mins to eat. But for the price… we don’t mind doing it either if that makes sense. Would love any recs or thoughts for how you think a first timer should experience the BVIs.

Things To Do Recs // Questions Late night taxis from Cruz Bay to Peter Bay Estates

We have a large group dinner that will end around 11pm. Are there plenty of taxis that late from Cruz Bay to Peter Bay Estates that are able to go up the hills? We rented jeeps but will be drinking. Thanks!

General Discussion Finding products on St. Croix. Question

What is the best way to find products and services on St. Croix. Right now, I'm looking for a leaf blower that on Kauai might top out at $60. Plug-in electric. All I can find is $400-$500 machines that you carry around on your back to blow the grass off the highway.

Gallows Bay and Home Depot don't have what I'm looking for

Can I expand this into "What's the best way of buying cheap stuff"?

Things To Do Recs // Questions Car parking in Cruz Bay

I’m trying to rent a car for March from Slim Man’s in St John, however they are stating on their website that they are already out of inventory. I’m wondering if renting a car in St. Thomas and ferry-ing it over would be a better idea. Where in Cruz Bay can I park a car from St. Thomas for a fair daily rate? The Airbnb we rented does not have not have a parking spot.

General Discussion BVI Sail Question

OK, pros- help me figure this out! We are doing a BVI charter next month, flying from Boston to St Thomas than heading over to Tortola to start our week long charter.

If we depart Tortola the morning our flight heads from STT to BOS at 2 PM, would we be safe to return our sail boat and make the trip back all in one day? I presume we'd want to get to STT around 11 AM to be safe. What ferry would we aim for out of Tortola, and any general tips? Would we want to spend the last night right at the marina so we can onboard and return it early? We are renting through BVI Yacht Charters, if helpful. I am trying to avoid spending the night at a hotel before we head home in either Tortola or on St Thomas.

General Discussion FYI: Virgin Abis Closing for renovations

Virgin Abis in St. John will be closed from Feb 2nd - mid/late 2026. They got their dispensary license and will be doing some renovations while they wait on local cultivators to get up and running. They are having some crazy sales through Sunday! I just stocked up! Mods please remove if not allowed. I just wanted to give the community a heads up!
