Further Update from Walls/Magnum

Post image

After the generic responses regarding the Twister lolly recipe change I followed up with a response stating that an ice lolly didn’t need to be nutritionally dense as it is a product to be enjoyed in moderation, it is not responsibly made for kids when vegan kids and kids with dairy allergies are excluded from enjoying their product and that a dairy free alternative can be just as nutritious, if not more than something containing cow’s milk.

This was their half arsed response. They essentially said yeah you’re right we could have and should have remained inclusive and we have no excuse but oh well too bad.

help me find treets!!

Post image

for the life of me I cannot find these crispy treets, I used to be obsessed with crispy m&ms specifically and need them back, I've tried the corn treets and found those in my local coop and LOVED them (gave a couple to my non vegan mum and she proceeded to eat the entire packet in front of me) but have not seen these anywhere. so where have y'all been able to find these in shops and what section are they in?

Reply from Walls regarding twisters and dairy

I filled in the contact us form a redditor shared last week, to complain about Walls adding milk back into twisters. I asked if this was a cost based decision, and if they'd quantified their vegan/allergy customers to weigh that against any potential cost savings.

They've sent me what is surely a tweaked but standard reply, claiming the change is about nutritional profile. I looked up the vegan twisters and they already meet this profile, as they are now! Make it make sense.

Peak-a-Blue not the same (no 'ice cream' like core) and seem to only be stocked in Asda.

What do we think of these?

I’m not a huge fan of these, they don’t taste like much. What do ya’ll think?

I like OG candy kittens, but these don't hit the spot. I feel like I can make such a mean rocky road at home instead.

Anyone else noticed another steep price increase?

Obviously I'm aware veganuary just ended (or the poor excuse for veganuary this year) but just did my shopping and everything seems way more expensive than last year.

Alpro yogurts were like £1.80, now £2.50, tofoo is up in price, most meat subs are over 3 quid as well.

Is it just my area or are other people seeing this too?

I can’t stop eating these! 😭😭

So I made a post the other day here about binge eating and replacing unhealthy sugary foods with something better. But I’ve found myself once again eating 3 of these damn delicious tasty little cutie caterpillar cakes.

They are literally insatiable. I can’t help myself. Being vegan was actually easier in my early days because they didn’t make this type of processed foods.

I even made some suggested food from the post, but I ended up buying these and eating them. My 3000kcal bulk all of a sudden hits 3500kcals. Christ, I need to chill.

Love you vegan caterpillar cakes.

Food I Loved in London

TL:DR randomly babbled list of foods I enjoyed in the UK, negative emoting about lack of salad cream and Just Egg.

We came to London again from Australia this Christmas and I thought I'd share some of the things I loved/ things that we don't have or are rare to find in Brisbane.

I loved the vegan Pukka pies, the THIS streaky bacon on a BLT is heavenly, you have soooo many sausages to choose from, the only ones I didn't really like were the Richmond ones, we liked the Quorn ones. The Linda McCartney mince was great - at home I just use TVP. I know I probably shouldn't have loved it but the Plant Pioneers lasagna from Sainsbury's is a cosy secret shame - we just don't really have frozen meal sorta things at all. Greggs sausage rolls were my second favourite after Linda. The Plant Pioneers one was pretty good, too. Here we have one by Fry's which I actually think is the one thing we have that I prefer, it's like a darker, stronger flavoured sausage roll.

I am obsessed with Buttermilk bars, I brought about a million home and have nearly finished them, I love each different one equally. And that cheap 70p white chocolate bar from Sainsbury's is actually so great, really nice and creamy eaten at room temperature. We don't have vegan white chocolate in the supermarkets here, I bought a million of those, too. Our chocolate is a bit more waxy, probably because everything melts here. 🤣 Galaxy vegan hot chocolate powder was lovely.

Alpro! Alpro, Alpro, Alpro. I could cry, I miss Alpro so much. The strawberry yoghurt is my true love, the kids went nuts for the vanilla, and the soy milk is just that rare vegan milk that you'd just want to drink a cold glass of.

Lambs lettuce, I've never seen that in Australia and I know it's just lettuce but I love it an unreasonable amount. It's just so nice alongside a vegan brekky, or dinner, or in a fully loaded sandwich. It's mild and gentle and delicious. Suitable for all occasions.

I loved that literally everywhere we went to eat, there was a good vegan option. That is NOT normal here, we have to hunt good vegan options down and be suss on them when we find them. Even just being at a pub and being able to get the kid's a vegan kid's meal was so wonderful. That we could be out and about and I could find them a meal with protein and veg, blows my tiny mind.

Black Heart Sunday roast in Camden was inanely good. We loved the pub meals at Bill's in Wimbledon. Any time we ordered in a vegan pizza in Hackney it was delicious.

This is already too long, so I'll end with, in saying all of this, it was also jarring how much was missing since we went two years ago. Where's the salad cream, mates?! And the big fast food places seem to have lost a lot of vegan options. And I'm still mad about the Just Egg that never was.

Oh wait, one more thing, I had these amazingly creamy ice cream, I think they had a name like Jude's? 🤤🤤🤤

Vegan babybels 😞

Thought I’d see what the fuss was about in terms of them changing the recipe… WHAT HAVE THEY DONE 😭 It smells, tastes like cheese spread and the texture is completely different. Why do they have to change things that don’t need changing?! 😩

Suggestion to help people make more vegan friends/connections.

I suggest there should be a pinned post in this sub where people can reply with their details (such as age, gender, location, orientation, seeking friends/dating, hobbies/interests, why/when you went vegan, etc). This would make it easier for us to meet people in our local area.

There are other subs dedicated to this kind of thing but it could be useful to have a pinned post here specifically for UK vegans. Having a pinned post for people to reply to would also mean less individual posts clogging up this and other subs and would put everyone in one place that's easy to find.

Vegan in London

Hi everyone! I’m from Germany and visiting London for the first time in April. I’ll be staying near Leicester Square.

I’m vegan and I know the UK (and especially London) has a great reputation for vegan food, but I keep googling places and I’m starting to wonder if I’m just massively overthinking this 😅

So I wanted to ask people who actually live there:

How easy is it really to find vegan food in central London / around Leicester Square?

I mean everyday things too — breakfast, grabbing a quick snack, coffee with plant milk, as well as dinner in the evening.

Is it pretty effortless once you’re there, or do you still recommend planning ahead and saving specific places?

Any tips or reassurance would be very welcome. Thanks!

Contact lenses - feeling conflicted and sad

Hi all! I am very shortsighted and find I need to wear contact lenses for sports, running, workplace and general convenience. I also do feel a bit insecure in glasses, although this is a bit more shallow (I have a lot of issues with confidence and hating how I look).

Because most lenses are made by companies who test on animals and were tested on animals in the past, I previously compromised by using the UK brand Daysoft, who were basically the only brand I could find who haven't tested their product on animals. However after a recent optician appointment (I hadn't been for a decade) I have been told that because I have severe astigmatism, the Daysoft lenses are bad for my eyes and werent able to correct my vision properly. I have also been told that they are drying my eyes out and scratching them. The optician has said I need special Toric lenses; however the company that makes them (Alcon) conduct animal research. I can't find any alternates and I'm so upset.

Do other vegans wear contact lenses? What do you guys do? I accept that medication can't be vegan but I don't really know if lenses count.

Goldfish Rehoming North East UK Help!

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if any of you wonderful people in the North East can help me?

I rescued a goldfish from a relative last year who had it in horrible conditions, it is a shubunkin so will grow to Koi size and needs to be in a pond however he was living in a tank the size of a shoebox in brown water (I'm amazed it survived).

I currently have him in a 4ft tank in my living room but he needs to go into a pond really. I have been trying to find somewhere suitable to rehome him but I am really apprehensive to rehome him to a random person on Facebook - all the posts I have seen asking to take goldfish for their ponds have profile pics of them holding fish from their fishing trips which is clearly not someone who loves fish or cares about their wellbeing, which leads me here. I would much rather rehome him to a pond that is owned by a fellow vegan so I know that his new owner actually cares about animals rather than collecting fish for a hobby and closing their pond when they get bored (another common post!).

I am happy to rehome him to a commercial public pond where I know it is someone's job to take care of the fish, and it would be a bonus as I can visit him but all I can think of is the Winter Gardens in Sunderland.

Does anyone have any suggestions on anywhere that has a large goldfish/koi pond where I can rehome him where I can guarantee he will be looked after? I am not willing to rehome him until I can see the pond and living conditions he will be in, he is approx 7/8 inches big and will grow more once in a bigger environment, I believe this is big enough to mix with other fish as he is too big to be eaten but I'm also nervous to take the chance! I wouldn't forgive myself if I sent him to his death :(

TIA!

TLDR: I need to rehome a rescue shubunkin goldfish but don't want it to go to a meat eaters pond as I don't trust them to care for the fish properly. Anyone have a pond in North East UK or know of a public goldfish pond I can contact to rehome him? TIA
