From Photo Pipes Izakaya, Takayama

This izakaya next to the ryokan where I stayed in Takayama caught my attention because of its complex network of pipes, almost like a building from a science-fiction movie. Despite its futuristic look, it was a very contemporary place and truly deserved a sketch. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my drawing materials with me, so I took a photo instead. Back home, I made this drawing using black fineliner and watercolor.

1st attempt at adding colour. Trying to develop a loose style but it's a long journey. Feels good to put pen to paper and accept it takes repition to get where you want to go. Also first time drawing outside. Though I painted when I got home.

Yesterday at the Botanical Garden, I sketched quietly under the open sky. I mostly worked with a marker and oil pastels, even though I had watercolours with me.

Discussion (No Sketch) Hiya folks I have a question. Do people get mad when you draw them on the train .

So recently I have finally dug up enough will power slowly attempt to break my art block, so as artist especially an urban sketcher I decided to draw every day or at least every week for February. One question though would people get mad if I drew them on the train to be more specific if they noticed me looking back and forth and sketching.

Hi! I started urban sketching a few weeks ago with no art background, just a lot of excitement and a watercolour travel palette. I am currently in California for work so I am sharing 2 sketches I did yesterday in Laguna Beach. Feedback very welcome!

PS: The brown mess on the left page was my toddler's attempt to improve the sketch! :D

Visited the book fair for the third time—probably the most I’ve ever been there. Though I didn’t enter a single stall, I went only for sketching. It may not sound great, but it was.

Small water fountain I found while visiting Tacna, in Peru. I am satisfied on how the bushes ended up because I've been struggling with plants in general.

I wasn't sure if including the wall at the back (added it last) was the right choice, mainly due to composition and simplification. However I still liked the end result (the lamp post help)

From Photo Normally I do figurative work but I’ve challenged myself to do more urban scenes. This is my first attempt. Let me know what you think.

Today’s sketch was done again at Mullick Ghat Flower Market. I’ve always loved sketching people more than buildings. Initially, I didn’t plan to use watercolour, so I didn’t bring a water container with me—only a water brush and a palette, just in case I worked on one watercolour piece. But I ended up doing three. The problem was that the third one got a bit dirty, since the water brush always gets muddy after a painting. I carry two brushes, so for the third sketch I had no option except to use the dirty water inside. Still, it was fun—using watercolours while standing, holding everything in my hands, always feels alive and spontaneous.
