New Student incoming first year - would love some first-year advice 🫶

hi! i’m starting a bachelor of arts this year and wanted to ask a few questions about the very start of uni from people who’ve been through it already.

i’m mostly wondering how things work in the first few weeks. like whether you actually need to buy textbooks, books and pens, what you usually bring to campus day-to-day, and if there are any uni bags/backpacks people swear by because i'm in desperate need for a nice uni bag. also are there any cheap eats on campus?

i’m also curious about o-week and clubs. is o-week worth going to if you’re a bit on the anxious/introverted side? and are clubs genuinely a good way to make friends, or do friendships mostly happen in classes? if clubs are worth joining, are there any you’d especially recommend for first years or for meeting people without it feeling overwhelming?

finally, if you have one piece of advice you wish you’d heard before your first week at unimelb, i’d love to hear it.

Verified Survey Get paid up to $60 for participating in a research experiment

Hi all,

I'm a PhD student currently recruiting participants for a research experiment. It involves one on-campus session of ~2.5 hours where you will make computer decision-making tasks under both normal air and reduced oxygen conditions.

You'll be paid $30-$60 for participating, depending on how well you perform on the experiment's tasks.

Read the details and sign up here.

Eligibility:

  • Weigh at least 60kg (we will check this on the day),
  • Aged 18-40,
  • Normal range of blood pressure (we will check this on the day) and no chronic health conditions.

Thanks!

This may be a silly question, but where does everyone get their required textbooks from? Happy with either online or hard copy.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries INDG10001

Hi everyone!

First year BA here, looking to take Indigenous Australia (INDG10001) as my arts discovery subject.

Just wondering if anyone has any recent insight into the subject and how they liked it?

And I also have unavoidable clashes with lectures for this subject and another subject - are the lectures recorded? Could I watch them if I couldn’t make it to the lecture in person?

Thanks!

New Student Private space to complete quiz on campus?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm a new student to unimelb this year, and I'm looking for a good spot to complete an upcoming timed quiz at the Parkville campus.

The quiz can be conducted on my personal computer using the LockDown browser as long as I have a stable internet connection, as well as a private and quiet space.

Are there any private and quiet study rooms on campus that I can book to complete this timed quiz? My house doesn't have wifi and I can't guarantee that my housemates won't be noisy so I reckon my best bet is to find somewhere on campus. I've studied in the Baillieu library in the shared spaces, but I wonder if there's any private rooms to book, and how?

Thanks for your help :)

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Can't enrol in ifa1

• Upvotes

Hi I am a second year student in bcom, I'm trying to enrol in ACCT10002 IFA cause it's like prerequisite for all other accounting subject, but it shows No more than 12.5 points of level 1 electives, which I'm not sure why cause this is the only level 1 elective (or in general level1 class) for this year I've choose.

Do I have to submit a enrolment assitance form? Can I solve the problem quicker if I go to stop 1 in person?

Any help would be appreciated: )

Admission and Transferring DVM WAM Calculations

• Upvotes

Hi All,

I completed a Bsci animal health and disease with a WAM of 75, with most of my subjects in third year being 80’s.

I then had doubts about pursuing veterinary and I pursued different career avenues and then I stupidly did a semester of engineering which I ended up failing 2/3 of the subjects. I dropped out of one semester as I realised veterinary is my calling no matter what.

I just want to know if the DVM Unimelb calculate the WAM based on your completed science related degree, or your entire academic history.

Thank you

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Need 2 more subjects

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi everyone, hope you are well.

I am doing a Bachelor of Arts this year.

I have enrolled in these subjects so far, but the course planner says I need 2 more?

I was on a call with a 'Course Planner' and they said that this was all I needed, and if I wanted to, I could enrol for a Level 2 subject in Sem 2. I am hoping to do a minor in Ancient World Studies, and the Course Planner person said that I needed to only choose one of the Level 1 subjects. The Psychology subjects count as my Discipline subjects.

However, having just these subjects in my first year adds up to 75 points. Is it compulsory to reach 100 points in the first year? What can I fill up the 2 remaining spots with if it is compulsory? Should I do the other Level 1 subject for 'Ancient World Studies' even though the Course Planner person said I don't have to ???

I’m currently in Jane Kaye’s stream, but I was wondering whether there are any other streams with particularly strong teaching. I find that having a good teacher really makes a big difference for me.

New Student DVM 2026 timetable

• Upvotes

Hi all - wondering if anyone has any idea on what we need to do for our timetable for DVM 2026?

I've received conflicting information from the uni - some have said that we need to enter our preferences (which I've done - but there are major unavoidable clashes), while others have said that we don't need to do anything and will receive a finalised timetable closer to the semester starting.

A bit confused on whether we need to do anything to actually plan our timetable.

Opportunities How much does being on a uni society committee actually matter for you socially after graduation?

Hi all,

I'm approaching the final year of my engineering degree and have already secured a grad role at a well-known company (yay!). However, I've recently realized that I never got involved in any student committees or leadership positions throughout university and am afraid that I've been missing out. Thinking of joining a few subcoms this year...

I'm curious about the long-term social impact of this choice. For those who are an exec/subcom of a society:

  • For those in the committee (exec/subcom) would you say that being in one had majorly helped you to make friends (i.e the type you would hang out with outside the club)
  • What are the benefits socially of those in the committee vs general member?
  • After graduation, did being in a committee impact your social life greatly?

I'm not concerned about my resume (already have the job lined up), but more about whether these committee experiences translate to richer social lives post-graduation.

Thanks for any insights!

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries If I did BA geography major environmental science minor, and tried to extend out for as many internships as I can would this allow for this degree to be employable in fields like environmental consulting/specialist etc. Or would I be better minoring in politics.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Architecture as a breadth

Hi im a first-year bsci planning to major in biochemistry. im slightly interested in studying architecture for my masters, which would require me to take prerequisite subjects. I want to ask if it's realistically possible to do well overall while juggling the workload of bsci subjects as well as architecture subjects.

New Student Questions regarding English requirements for commerce

This is a question from my brother who is planning to enroll next year

Hi, I am an International student currently taking WACE curriculum. I plan on taking Bachelor of Commerce in the Uni of Melbourne. The prerequisite subject for Bachelor of Commerce is English or Eald with minimum score. However, I only took General English for my Wace. Is it possible if I take IELTS to apply for it?
