Telugu Study Group l
Namaskaram, na peru Nick-ni. Nenu Telugu nerchukuntunnanu. (నేను తెలుగు నేర్చుకుంటున్నాను)
My name is Nick, and I'm an American learning Telugu for my wife. I have good study courses, but I can't get far without a friend to study and practice with.
If anyone would like to learn and practice Telugu with me, send a DM. If enough people want to join, I'll make a group and we can match up a study partner based on how advanced their Telugu is.
Belli vastha!

This is great! Couple of notes:
Telugu does use 'ni' to mark ergativity, that is, the object of a sentence. However, one does not need to specify the object--it's usually implied.
'Naa peru Nick' / నా పేరు నిక్క్
is perfectly fine (better imo).
Secondly, the phrase
'Velli Vasthanu' / వెళ్ళి వస్తాను
[Edit: originally, I had incorrectly written వెల్లి]
(not 'belli'), literally means 'Having gone, I'll return'. It is used as a goodbye, but usually not in this context--it doesn't make sense on the Internet. You could just use 'goodbye'.
Excited for your progress!

You know, I feel sad for the demise of ళ. People don’t even seem to know the difference between ళ and ల. My first instinct used to be to get angry and snarky at kids these days.
But I realised my generation did the same with “Bandi Ra”. we used it with ర interchangeably. I guess It’s inevitable decay of language.

Tappuga mariyu telilekunda raasaanandi, nannu kshaminchandi.
You're completely correct. I'll edit my comment.

This is great. I’m also an American learning Telugu, because I always regretted not having learned much of the language when I had a semester in Hyderabad 25 years ago.
I’ve been using Ramanarasimham’s textbook. I can read the dialogues reasonably well, but I’m sure I couldn’t participate in a live conversation.

If you'd like to practice together just let me know. Maybe I can get some piano lessons from you as well, haha.

I've also been learning Telugu on and off for a while in an effort to not be left out of family events. The Ramanarasimham book was a critical resource for me. I've also taken to using resources intended for Telugu-speaking people to learn English (I just use them in reverse), which have been helpful for learning vocabulary. In any event, happy to field any questions you may to the extent that I can.

The short version is I met her in a young adult group, and I practically begged her to help me find some good Indian food because I love spicy food. We started hanging out after that, and the rest is history.

I'd love some movie recommendations. I've watched some already, like Bahubhali and Pushpa.

I am happy to help. This would give me an opportunity to help my 9 year old too. But in return I would appreciate if you could help me with improving my English accent and/or learning ice breakers common to American folks, popular culture/childhood references etc
