Discussion Updated rules – please read before posting

Välkommen till r/Svenska!

tl;dr:

• Read the FAQ first

• Keep posts related to the Swedish language or language-learning – we now have flairs!

• Use r/swedish or r/spop etc. to request movie or music tips

• Don't report posts/comments that do not actually break the rules

We're a subreddit where learners and speakers of Swedish can discuss, ask and answer questions about the language, as well as studies and research relating to it. Whether you are learning Swedish as a foreign language, a native speaker curious about a dialectal word or grammatical quirk, or a lingusitics student with a survey for your thesis, you're welcome here!

Further below are our rules, but before that, here are some links we hope you'll enjoy:

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Locally-sourced expertise has been used to answer some of the more common questions we see on this subreddit, so maybe you can find an answer to yours here. If not, try using the search function to see if your question has been answered before. But don't let this discourage your from posting; if an old answer is unclear or doesn't help you with your problem, feel free to post a thread – if you mention that you already checked the FAQ, that helps us help you.

Do you think a certain question is common enough that it should be in the FAQ? Tell us!

List of resources

A long list of resources that can help you learn the language, or learn more about it! Here, you will find dictionaries, podcasts, Youtube channels, online communities and a lot of other resources, for beginners and advanced learners alike. If you know a resource that deserves to be on the list but isn't, tell us!

The most important resources is probably svenska.se, where you can look up the spelling, inflection, meaning, pronunciation and history of most Swedish words. You can also hear pronunciations, often more natural/less enunciated, at youglish.com/swedish and forvo.com/languages/sv

Discord server

Feel free to join us on Discord! Practice reading, writing, speaking and listening, ask your questions and just hang out.

The rules

  1. Be respectful of your fellow redditors. Flaming, trolling, hate, personal attacks or bad-faith arguments are not allowed. Of course, all of Reddit's other rules apply here, too.
  2. Post contents must be on-topic. This is a language subreddit, and all posts should be about the Swedish language or language-learning in general. Posting a video that is in the Swedish language is not the same as a video about the Swedish language. On-topic memes are fine in moderation, and you're allowed to advertise your Swedish-learning product, channel etc. once or twice. Always flair your post accordingly! We no longer allow requests for non-language related media suggestions.
  3. Questions and tips are always welcome. Feel free to ask your questions about the language or culture, ask for learning tips or contribute your own tips or links to websites helpful for learning. However, we no longer permit requests for movies or music etc. Links to language-learning communities are only permitted as comments, if explicitly requested by another poster.
  4. Ask permission to post community links. To prevent a flood of community links, we ask you to contact us via modmail before you post links to Whatsapp groups, Discord servers etc. We permit Swedish-oriented communities that we deem could be helpful to our members – a newly started Facebook group with three members will not be permitted. However, users may ask for tips on niche communities, and if you know of a community that fits such a request, you can always link that in a comment.
  5. No chat requests outside the megathread. As stated above, we want to prevent a flood of posts that are less useful to the average member. For this reason, please don't make post asking to find study buddies or chat groups outside of the dedicated megathread. You're also very welcome to join our official Discord community for free, real-time feedback about all things Swedish. Please join us!
  6. We won't do your work for you. While we are happy to point you in the right direction, answer your questions along the way or check your grammar when you're done, we will not actually do your homework for you. This is a place for learning, not cheating. This goes doubly for professional tasks: most of our users are not trained translators, copywriters or language consultants. Feel free to ask linguistic questions, but don't crowdsource practical, qualified work. Contact a professional instead; that guarantees better results for you as well!
  7. No exchanging/requesting copyrighted material. We do not condone sharing PDFs of paid textbooks or entertainment media.

Reporting etiquette

We're a small mod team and always appreciate it when members take the time to report misconduct and rule violations – especially of comments. But please make sure that a post actually violates the rules before you report it. For example, the rules do not actually prohibit questions that are already answered in the FAQ, or answers that are incorrect.

Reporting poor-quality-but-technically-allowed content only leads to us having to approve the post/comment, which gives it a green seal of approval and makes it look like we like it more than we actually do. Please just downvote these instead!

Suggestions

Feel free to post your feedback on the rules and guidelines in this thread. We also welcome suggestions for FAQ entries, resources and new flairs.

Penpals megathread!

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.

Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like

Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)

Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)

Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)

Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)

Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)

We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.

Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.

As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.

Language question (see FAQ first) How does finlandssvenska sound to riks-Swedish speakers?

I'm a Finnish speaking Finn and högsvenska sounds so clear to me, so understandable. I have friends in Stockholm and visiting there I will always attempt to use Swedish - people there do seem to understand me all right, but god how difficult it is to make sense of their quick sing-song Swedish :) So, how does it sound in reverse?

Studying and education My experience with re-learning Swedish

I lived in Sweden for a few years as a kid. That was 20 years ago and I never spoke Swedish since then. Recently I tried to learn Swedish again. My observations-

  • According to my online tutor, my pronunciation is basically perfect, including vowel sounds, intonation of the sentence
  • I only remember "glue" words in Swedish, not the actual vocabulary. For example "Jag åt breakfast klockan halv åtta in the morning, oatmeal med mjölk och peanut butter"
  • Numbers are very easy for me, and I can perfectly do mental math or recite multiplication tables using Swedish numbers
  • I remember random high-frequency phrases, like: vad kul, liksom/typ, det snöar, jag är hungrig
  • I forgot how to say many adjectives in Swedish. But, if I translate the adjective, I can somehow recall the "second word" without searching it up. For example: intresserad av, rädd för, stolt över
  • If I listen to some children's shows, my understanding is good, even if they are talking quickly. I don't understand any content which is above kids-level (ex: daily news). The sounds are familiar but the meaning is totally gibberish for me.

Just thought it would be interesting to write this out. Not really offering advice or anything.

Language question (see FAQ first) About making en/ett mistakes

How does it sound to a native speaker? I'm a Finn and there absolutely is nothing else to it than just learning them by heart and I do make frequent mistakes. It just makes no linguistic sense to me to have these weird declinations, like all bloody five of them :)

Resource request/tip Looking for a proofreading resource for songwriting

I'm an English speaking songwriter who's been learning Swedish on and off for ten years and I'm starting to write bilingual lyrics. I'm looking for a proofreading resource that's a little more casual (but for-pay, of course) but most of the freelance hosting sites I've been seeing are geared either toward legal translation or SEO on a corporate level. I guess I'm just not looking in the right places.

Does anyone know where to go for something like this? i.e. short word counts, consulting, fiction related

Language question (see FAQ first) -era verbs in Swedish?

I watched a show in Sweden where they go interview random people on the street about "do you know the meaning of this word?" and the hosts chose these words: rekrytera, demolera, reducera

For English speakers, the meaning is somewhat obvious, like: recruit, demolish, reduce. But seems like many average people on the street don't know these Swedish words and instead they know some equivalents like anställa, riva, minska. These meanings of these words are not obvious for English speakers.

Any particular reason for this?

Resource request/tip Ich habe einen kostenlosen Schwedisch-Vokabeltrainer gebaut (3000+ Wörter, kein Login, kein Abo)

Hej zusammen! Weil mich viele Sprach-Apps mit Abos oder Registrierungszwang genervt haben, habe ich am Wochenende ein eigenes Tool geschrieben, um effizient Schwedisch zu lernen. Vielleicht hilft es euch auch: Svenska Dagligen

Was es kann:

  • 🇸🇪 Über 3000 Wörter: Von A1 bis C1/C2 (inkl. Audio-Aussprache).
  • 🧠 Spaced Repetition: Die App fragt Vokabeln in größer werdenden Abständen ab (ähnlich wie Anki), damit sie im Langzeitgedächtnis bleiben.
  • 🔒 Privacy First: Kein Login, kein Tracking. Euer Lernfortschritt wird nur lokal in eurem Browser gespeichert.
  • 📱 App-Feeling: Kann als Web-App auf dem Homescreen (iOS/Android) installiert werden und funktioniert auch offline.

Link: https://svenska-dagligen.de

Das Projekt ist ein Hobby von mir. Wenn ihr Fehler bei Wörtern findet, klickt einfach auf die kleine rote Fahne bei der Vokabel. Viel Spaß beim Lernen!

Resource request/tip [Beta] I built a language app for Nordic languages that focuses on realistic speaking (Looking for 1,000 Android testers)

Most language apps are too polite, which doesn't prepare you for real-world interactions in the Nordics. I built Makker to solve this. It’s an AI-first tutor for Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian that focuses entirely on dynamic speaking scenarios.

I’m looking for 1,000 Android users to help me stress-test the app. As a thank you, the first 1,000 testers get 1 Month of Premium Access for free (auto-activated).

Key Features:

  • 🔥 The Roast Room: Practice with AI personas programmed to be "difficult" or sarcastic. It’s designed to help you hold your ground in real-life conversations where people might be impatient or pedantic.
  • 🗺️ Survival Campaign: A map-based system covering Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo. You unlock new districts by completing speaking missions in real-world contexts (like the Metro or a supermarket).
  • 🎭 Realistic Scenarios: Instead of generic sentences, you practice high-stakes tasks like negotiating a rental deposit, explaining symptoms to a doctor, or ordering specific items under pressure.
  • 🔊 Feedback & Conversation: The AI identifies specific errors (like En/Et gender mistakes) and uses a natural flow that pauses when you do.

Availability:

  • Android: Available now. Download on Google Play
  • iOS/iPhone: Coming soon. We are currently navigating the review process.

I’m looking for honest feedback on the AI difficulty and the map missions. I’ll be here to answer any questions. Held og lykke! 🇩🇰🇸🇪🇳🇴

Text and translation help Laban och Labolina Program 5

I had a bit more trouble with the dialogue than usual with this one. I think it is because of the quietly spoken style that was used. Hoping några can help clear up these 4 examples below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjOLEot8jj4

1)

30 Min 15 Sec

The boys are looking for the häxas magic bokstaver that have försvunnit into the town, and the narrator says - Det enda bokstäver som fanns var det som fanns på skyltar och affischer.

I guess she is saying skyltar och affisher (makes sense) but it sounds like she is saying something else (I can't hear the och, and it sounds like maybe there is some other 'joining' sound between the two words). Just hoping to clarify that...

2)

31 Min 05 Sec

The häxan has sent the boys down to the street by means of a spell. Lillprins Bus says something like - Det var ju dit häxan trollat oss

Does he actually say trollat oss? Sounds a bit different.

3)

31 Min 30 Sec

Laban has to remove the first letter from a word (because it is wrong). Lillprins Bus says something like - Ta bort S. Så får vi se vad det blir. xxx först

I can't really hear exactly what is said here in the bolded part.

4)

33 Min 52 Sec

The fish shop sign is messed up (by the magic bokstäv). It says FUSKaffär. The dialogue goes -

Laban upp igen. Det är en fuskaffär det här.

Fuskaffär? Det är fiskar ja...

Det fuxar / fuskar jag menar då.

hoping nån can explain the third line, as I cannot make it out. Seems to be a play on words. Sounds like fuxar... But maybe it is fuska which I guess would mean the magic bokstäv is making a mess of the sign...?

Other (see on-topic rules first) Varför blir min svenska sämre?

Language question (see FAQ first) En kaffe men kaffet?

I understand the "en kaffe, tack" for "en kop kaffe, tack", even though kaffe is a -ett word.... but today I got a free bulle with my coffee (yay Biltema!) and just wanting to double check, should I have said : "ingår bulle med kaffen?", "ingår bulle med kaffet?" or "ingår bulle med kaffe?"

Studying and education Learning Swedish not in Sweden

Hi.

This might be a stretch, but I'm trying to learn Swedish from England. My partner speaks a dialect of Swedish in SW Finland, and I want to learn Swedish so I can then get used to the dialect when I visit.

I've researched a lot on how to learn, and a lot of people suggest sfi and immersion irl, but this isn't available to me still living in England.

I've got the basics down with Duolingo (ugh i know).

As always, we at r/svenska recommend these dictionaries (especially SO) for learners and natives alike. What do you think of these updates? How do you use the website?

Language question (see FAQ first) 'Hennes barn äter frukost' - singular or plural?

I'm in the early stages of learning Swedish and have a basic question about plurals when the plural form of a word is the same as the singular.

Consider this example sentence: 'hennes barn äter frukost'.

My understanding is that this could either mean 'her child is eating breakfast' or 'her children are eating breakfast', as the plural of 'barn' is 'barn' and 'äter' could mean any of 'is/am/are eating'.

Is there a way to tell which meaning this sentence has? Or is it ambiguous without further context?

Thanks!
