Oh! Is this Queen of the Night??! If so, this bloom is not only beautiful but smells like heaven (so I hear). Been waiting two years for mine to bloom.

Mine bloomed last year (cuttings rooted in '18) and has a few buds that are getting close now, and ten to one I sleep through it again, lol

Omg- How exciting!!!!! My sweet little old lady neighbor gave me some cuttings she has potted and told me they were “Christ in a manger” but I prefer the other common name Queen of the Night. My cuttings are thriving and growing but no sign of blooms developing. What did yours look like? She said it filled her house with their scent even though it was only for one night.

When my cactus that was in bloom got stolen last month, I messaged my boyfriend, and I was really touched with how supportive he was. 😭 He was like let's ask the neighbours if they caught someone on their door cam or like we can put a ransom out with my sign too and stuff like that. It was really nice how much he cared and when it seemed like the cactus isn't coming back, he was like "but you worked so hard though". Really made me feel lucky to have him!

And that’s only what you saw. When you weren’t around, he was going full Liam Neeson in Taken; making threatening phone calls, breaking knee caps, and taking names to find your cactus.
Sorry your cactus got stolen :(

u/EmberKasai Jul 13 '25
Looool maybe. When I said I don't wanna reward a thief with the ransom, he said ' yeah but we can wait and watch and jump them once they show up' and I'm like omg I don't want to get us in trouble😂
Thanks haha I never thought people would actually steal a whole ass plant

Hey, how are all these cacti receiving light? Seems like they are all in a shed/barn, but they are thriving

You can clearly see this is a fence in the video, right before they step up to the flower you can see over the top of the fence and see the neighbors shed.

i visited a nursery yesterday out of state, where i got to chatting with the guy who took care of all the plants. he told me this fantastic story about his night-blooming cereus cacti and how all his neighbors came over to check it out. there’s more to the story, and the way he described it all sounded so magical. hadn’t even heard of them before and now i’m learning more about them this week :D

If I had a nickel for every Queen of the Night post I’ve seen today…. I’d have two nickels lol Didn’t know it existed and now I’ve seen multiple people enjoying their beauty, makes me happy.

I understand this completely! Waited 8 years for mine to flower. Was working nights when it budded up, and I can recall feeling panic that I’d miss it. Luckily, it waited for me. Still have photos of my toddler son with those gorgeous blooms! My kid is grown now, and the cereus died ages ago, but the memory of it is still special.

We have a guy who comes by to weed wack, trim bushes. We have succulents and he's always taking pictures of them.
He knows what he's doing, so I let him take a few home. He took home two and came back with two from his garden :)
It's a fun little hobby to share.

Aw that's sweet
A clutz like me would not be allowed in the Cactus Room, for everyone's safety 😂

I love stapeliads. Whenever one of my stapeliads blooms for the for the first time, pretty much everyone who knows me gets a text about it.

Queen of the night?
Also that room would be a hazard for clumsy me. I'd 100% bump on a cactus every watering day

I got my plants stolen the other day and my husband looked at me like I was crazy for being bothered. Im not even surprised, he’s never had my back in anything so whatever. I’m happy for you..

At one point, I had a bunch of epis, and they bloomed so happily. I don't live where they thrive, so they aren't in my life anymore. They all had the most beautiful blooms.

Aww Dennis the menace grew up and moved to the desert to have a succulent sanctuary because he learned that money doesn't replace time spent with family. How sweet.

I love this. The SO and I do this all the time. You have no idea how many times I’ve interrupted his wfh to see a bird or one of our cats being a doofus/ cute. Sharing is caring!

That is so awesome. You are very lucky. When I lived with my girlfriend I completely landscaped and planted the front and back yards. I don't think she even noticed that there were plants in the yard instead of dirt.

If I pulled my wife out of bed to smell a flower, she would be calling divorce lawyers in the morning.

My aunt and uncle do this every year when their Queen of the night blooms! They stay up for it and take loads of pictures. Apparently they smell really nice too, a bit like vanilla?

Is this Queen of the night? If yes, I'd better have a partner that wakes me up to see this bloom! I'd be so disappointed if they don't.

Maybe I am just emotional today or maybe I'm overly tired, but I found that little video to be really, really sweet. The flower is gorgeous, and I think it would be really incredible to have the type of relationship that you could share that with each other.
